(PSN)Deus1008 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I was wondering if anyone thinks giving the new player more choices in terms of starting gear is a good idea or a bad idea. Let everyone know what you guys think. I was thinking the new player should be able to choose from either the braton(not the mk-1 version, they should just vault that pos), strun or one of the sniper rifles. And for secondary weapons maybe the lato, the seer and maybe the Bronco. And finally for melee they should get to choose from the skana, the bo or the scindo. If you guys think its a stupid idea or if you think its a good idea, or if you have better choices in weapons that you think would be a better fit for the new player experience then let me know. Thanks.
(PSN)MoRockaPDX Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Kinda depends on how early the Focus System is introduced. If their are ability that can be unlocked that effect things like your weapons choice you might want to make decision about what you start with early. That all depends on how the excess mastery works with focus accumulation. I am certainly looking forward to how it turns out.
(PSN)StoneRevolver Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 (edited) I think there should be more options for starting weapons, but I also think there should be more warframes to pick from. Loki is too advanced for new players simply because he isn't the Master Race without certain mods, Ember and Frost would be good frames to add to the starter roster. Edit; grammar Edited June 21, 2014 by (PS4)StoneRevolver
(PSN)killerbunny53 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I think new players should have a weapon choice of 3 different weapons like they get a choice of frame, but the other 2 weapons should be new weapons that are balanced with the current starter (Totally new to the game). Yes though I do agree with player choice

Edit; grammar I think that there should be still 3 frames, but a replacement for Loki... Frost suits the build

Edit; grammar i agree 100% but i think volt should be put back in as a starter frame when i see some one start with loki they seem to struggle early on.
Ether_SolRac Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 i like the idea of variable starting weapons. and about switching loki, id have to say either ash or banshee. this way we can maintain the sort of trio aspect to them: warrior (Excalibur), mage (Mag) rouge (Loki).
CaveCricket48 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Braton, Strun, and Latron would be good alternative primaries. Lato, Furis, and Bronco for secondary (Lato still needs a buff back to its old 20 damage though).
-Upgreid- Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 (edited) I think it should be four options, just to open up new opportunities and windows for players: Excalibur (Warrior, Damage) Volt (bring him back as a starter!)(Defensive Caster, Protection) Mag (Offensive Caster, CC) Loki (Stealth, Enemy Manipulation) Mk-1 Braton (Auto) Burston (Burst) Latron (Battle Rifle) Snipetron (yes, bring it back as a Corpus-manufactured Tenno weapon, like the Mk-1) (Sniper) Strun (Shotgun) Furis (Automatic) Sicarus (Burst) Lato (Semi-Auto Pistol) Lex (Sniper Pistol) Bronco (Sawed-off Shotgun) Skana (and it's essentially all you're going to need melee-wise)... These will all round out together quite nicely, and it should allow for more variety at the start of the game. All are decent weapons (except the MK-1, that thing needs some serious buffing), and are either current starters (Mag), or were the original starters and available for 75 plat (Volt, Loki, Excal). They can also be obtained fairly early in the game, so I don't see why they can't be starter weapons. Edited June 21, 2014 by UpgradeInProgress
(PSN)Deus1008 Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Also, another thing, and its a little off topic, but why would they start the new player out on mercury? ....its got to be the most dullest and repetitive tile set in the game. I know its still in beta and they're probably going to do a complete rework of mercury, but I think the new player should be wowed.

I think the new player experience is getting reworked to make Earth the starter planet or the beginning of the story. Anyhow, I think it would be a mistake to give the player too many choices from the start. Some players already feel unsure of what to pick when they're presented with the choice of warframes, so throwing a bunch of weapons in their face could be overwhelming. The starter loadout is fine and it lets players get used to the basics of the game. I think it would be better to offer the weapons later on, once players have a chance to see how the game works. Maybe they can implement a quest mission to let players test out some of the other weapons and allow them to pick the one they like. That way, they get a chance to try the weapon before making the choice, instead of picking something blindly.
(PSN)Deus1008 Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 Oh yeah, I never thought of it that way, it would be alot of choices, and that could overwhelm the new player. I do like the idea of earth being the starting planet, especially with the kubrow running around. It will definitely give the new player a better impression of warframe.

Even though weapon paradigms are easy to understand for many people, players should have a chance to try the combat a bit and get a feel for how the game works, before presenting the weapon choice. Mission types, enemy placement, and enemy density are important factors to consider when selecting a weapon. Games also treat weapon types differently, so a sniper rifle in one game may handle very differently than a sniper rifle in another game. I've heard people regret their choice of warframe at the beginning of the game, and pushing a weapon selection there would make things worse. I can only imagine the problems that would arise when a new player picks a sniper rifle and runs into trouble during a survival mission. Some players can handle that kind of thing just fine, but the new player experience should try to prevent fresh players from getting discouraged. If we keep the starter loadout as-is and provide a quest to earn a weapon later, they get a set of reliable weapons and they get another weapon to suit their preferred weapon style. This gives the player the chance to figure out what kind of weapon they want and it provides a sense of progression by allowing them to earn it.

(PSN)Deus1008 Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 They mentioned on the dev stream that there will be some sort of comprehensive tutorial missions guiding the new player through all of the various mechanics of warframe, and mentioned something about vors prize, maybe this is eluding to being awarded a different weapon or maybe a set of the lower tier damage and multi shot mods.
