Dark Souls Ii Thread

Anyone play or have played?

I was a big fan of the original Dark Souls, but Dark Souls II hasn't been much fun so far. The targeting behaves much better than in Dark Souls -though range is still strangely short- and the co-op/PvP seems to work better so I'm trying to stay positive, but I'm getting tired of inconsistent animations, artificial difficulty and all the big mobs in tiny locked rooms that pass for 'bosses'.

Would anyone recommend any builds or anything?

After messing around with a few characters and doing a 16 of all stats, jack of all trades character it looks like a faith build is the way to go. Heide Knight weapons are given away, and lightning seems to be boss again. Large selection of miracles in the Tower of Flame area, which is very farm-friendly. Probably start up a paladin -> sunbro build after work.

I absolutely dreaded Dark Souls 2. It simply wasn't fun or interesting. The PvP is boring and covenants are more broken than they were in Dark Souls. Luckily thanks to the steam sale, my Sens Fortress Seigmeyer is seeing a lot of invasions.

But as far as Dark Souls 2 builds go, 32 ADP and then whatever else you want that can fast roll.

Yeah, I haven't played it yet, but everything I've heard seems to say 2 is the weakest of the three Souls games. The biggest issue seems to be that it was trying to be hard on purpose, while with Dark and Demon's the difficulty was more a natural byproduct of the game design.

I can see that angle, but I don't mind it. You have enemies with move sets that are so varied it actually breaks the context. Like the big knights with two hand swords. One swing they can barely pick it up, the next they slam it three times. Not just being slow sometimes, like Artorias in the last game, but they actually struggle and then an instant later it's light as a feather. That's annoying for my first time fighting any particular enemy, but by round three with any given mob I know the score.

The stuff that gets on my nerves is the 'fake' difficulty. Like areas where the floor falls out from beneath you and kills you with no warning signs, or mobs you can't lock on to even after you hit them. That crap is just trial and error, not awareness or preparedness.

The rat king PvP stuff is just mindblowingly stupid. I don't even feel like it's something to win or lose, just some guy got his dice rolls so now he gets to chuck projectiles at me in a hallway with the door clogged with eight trash mobs. I give it a good faith effort, let him feel pro, then go back to playing.

Played the hell out of Des, DkS, and Dks2.

DkS2 was enjoyable, but I agree that there was much more artificial difficulty in Dks2 compared to DkS & DeS. PvP is a ton better in Dks2 IMO, but between the majority of boss fights being "big armored dude in small room," lazy attack patterns fixed by ridiculous tracking, & much more poor hitboxes compared to the past few games, I have to say this was my least favorite in terms of PvE.

PvP is tons of fun though. I've easily put many more hours into PvP in Dks2 than any of the other Souls' games. Minus soul memory, anyways.

Dual-avelyn/Santiers spear wielding havels everywhere

EVERYWHERE EVREYTIME

Dual Avelyns are not that effective anymore since the debuff. Avelyns got longer reload animation and their damage has been nerfed. Same goes with the santier. Plus whenever someone tries to use twinblades i just parry them and kill them almost instantly they are not even fun to play against.

As for dark souls 2 pvp. Havel + G8 Magic barrier tryhards are everywhere. I sometimes think that their testers doesnt do anything because half of the weapons sucks or just outright better than the rest, Im looking at you greatswords, longswords and katana's.

I haven't gotten into the stats, but from looking around it seems like the flow is something like...

Dual wield power stance slow/fast non-target locked > ADP roll backstab BS > Poise tank + heavy weapon > random unfortunate PvE'ers

So I'll probably play my sunbro to beat the game and learn the ins and outs, then make a dual wielder with higher ADP than recommended. Roll backstab BS the tanks, and counter other ADP rollers with non-lock fast weapon attacks chaining into slow weapon attacks.

I've recently begun another play through of DS2. Although, I am a bit hesitant to do so this time around. The first time I played I did a strength/dexterity  build and I managed to beat the game just fine. This time I'm gonna be doing a more magical build and leaning towards sorcery. I'm hesitant because some of the stuff is a nightmare.

An example would be the Shrine of Amana. I love the place for how pretty it looks but, holy crap, it's a headache.

Casters + Water(No Rusted Iron Ring this time around) + Invasions at points + Homing attacks = Ouch.

I've heard stories of how much this area has screwed people over but, I managed to make it out myself in a considerate amount of time. The other parts that were a headache for me was that some of the areas belonged to covenants. I played when the game first came out on PC and I couldn't even explore the areas like I wanted to.

Constant invasions.

I wasn't gonna waste one of those limited Human Effigies. Although I just disconnected from the internet and explored to my hearts content. I thought it was fun when I wandered into the x6 Belfry Gargoyle bosses.

Anyways, back to topic. I'm not sure really which build to go for. I've seen a lot of varied builds and they seem to get the job done in way than another. However the explorer class I rarely ever saw. I'm sure that class has to transfer over into something somehow in order to progress in the game.

Praise the Sun.

K... so apparently weapons are all made of glass now. I was trying repeatedly to go backwards from cardinal tower to the crestfallen retreat bonfire to farm and try out melee weapons, but I can't make it. My weapon breaks every time. I even tried not hitting walls with a rapier/longsword combo where I could thrust and parry, but I still got to up to the archer with 1/40 on my rapier. My favorite combos so far are from the footsoldier's longsword, which is only 20 max durability. T_T

I read somewhere that PC weapons break twice as fast as console weapons due to frame rate being doubled on PC. Apparently the Japanese console game design community likes to link things to a locked frame rate. Still though, if this happens just trying to beat a few mobs in half-open environments, even on console I wouldn't be able to stand a pure melee build except for PvP / Boss co-op.

NOPE

Going back to pure mage.

16 STR/10 DEX for the good shield and fire longsword in the green burg.

17 ADP for 105 AGI when I'm at 50 ATT for cast speed

Then just keep END / ATT / INT all even.

Raise Vigor if my green bar gets longer than my red bar.

Maybe a little Vitality if the stuff that I wear for vanity is too heavy.

Dualwielding is just pointless. They use too much stamina and doesnt deal enough damage. You can just get 2 broadswords in each hands and attack with each weapon one time. Infinite stunlock, terrifying amounts of damage.

Also trying to roll bs the people using Greatswords, longswords and katana's are too risky because of the said weapons attack pattern and tracking and afaik, after 38 adp, it doesnt give you anything aside from increased resistances.

Its a trash weapon, not intended for pvp or pve, just a trash weapon for low level mobs. If you want a strong lonsword get Drake keepers longsword or Sunsword, but dont infuse sunsword with anything, despite the stats looking good on a infused sunsword, its actually worse like C scaling.
