OccasionalEffort Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 (edited) Introduction: I've Been playing this game since Day 1. For most part I don't post on forums or contribute as much as I should but I do keep a mental list of things I'd like fixed or see changed and for most part DE or the council usually feel the same on such things and take care of them right away. One of the most annoying and disappointing things in the game that I thought would of been changed already is the Inventory Slot system. It's the only real p2w factor in the game forcing new players to spend money if they truly wanna enjoy the game and use all the gear they work hard for early on. I've had numerous friends join and enjoy their time for hours only to find out they can't keep the new warframes they just worked for and quit usually in a rage. The fact that it cost money to buy these slots is ridiculous. There are plenty of other things in the game that you make plenty of money off of and are more cost efficient to spend money on. Not to mention buying slots is ridiculously expensive and cost more then Rare resources do which makes 0 sense. I don't know if this is something already in works for update 14 or not since your biggest thing with that update seems to be new player experience but if it isn't it should be and should happen asap. Suggestions: 1. Do a scaling credit system with slots like D3 does with bank space. It's not perfect and will be annoying but it gives f2p players an opportunity to keep the hard earn loot they get early on. Of course if you do this I'm a big supporter of giving more then 1 extra slot to start. People should be able to at least have room for 3-4 Warframes and 10-15 weapons without spending anything. 10-15 weapons might seem like a lot but considering that system counts melee/pistol/rifle/shotguns all together you can see how the space disappears very quickly. Sentinel inventory space should not even be a thing... I mean seriously.... just give them the slots for all the sentinels. 2. Remove the system entirely and just allow people to keep what they get. Honestly this is a Loot grind game.... people spend hours to farm up resources and parts for their stuff only to be limited by how much they can hold. This concept contradicts the very point of the game, which IMO is to eventually gather everything and increase your mastery rank. The game itself even points you in that direction ( Master all the warframes yatta yatta yatta ). It's silly to limit inventory space In any game let alone a game revolving around high amounts of loot and items. This is my #1 suggestion to fixing the problem.. I don't even care if you don't refund the plat I already spent on inventory slots but I don't believe new players should be limited in any way shape or form. I've seen countless people quit after finding out how limited inventory space was. Conclusion: Not to beat an already dead horse here but seriously this system for the inventory is severely harsh and forces people into spending money in a very dumb place and is a major turn off. This isn't me whining that I have no space either I have plenty of room myself as I work full time and spend quite A LOT of money on this game because I lack the time to progress otherwise. This is my rant on a system that limited my own brothers play experience and would of turned him away from the game if I hadn't helped him farm parts to sell for platinum ( yes a viable counter argument to my point, but it shouldn't be a forced thing ). I've had 4-5 friends quit after enjoying the game after finding out how limited they were in space. Its archaic and utterly disgusting to monopolize it and Judging off DE's recent surge to want to improve the new player experience ( probably because the population of this game has been declining every month and we aren't really getting many new faces ) this should be a serious change in update 14, or atleast 14.1 or something. I hope you guys look at this seriously and see how it can really turn away people. I like this game and I just wanna see it succeed in the future and eventually be the #1 F2P title on steam with constant new players streaming in all hyped up for a fantastic hack and slash experience. vomder Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 Slots are the only thing players need that they have to buy, I don't see any need to change it. A few more starting slots though probably would be fine or getting some as mastery rewards.
SoulDust Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 This is on the bottom half of my need to see priority list. Anyone who quits over inv space is...I have about 3 weps I used in each cat. 3 melee 3 primary's 3 seconds...and i rarely switch. The rest are wraith's or vandels. Everything else I just 30 and delete because I know good and damn well I'm not going to use it. Plus a slot is like what..12-25 plat. Meh...A lot more important things than this.

Nexzalas Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I agree that the inventory slots could be looked over again, but I thought that when you started the game (Have been playing for a long time as well) that you had "Starting Platinum" that you could only spend on the market place, slots, etc. with the exception of not being able to trade it with other players (for obvious reasons) and that was your ticket to be getting more slots early on. However with that said I still agree that there should be a "Starter" and "Initiate" a "Intermediate" and a "Master" type of slot opening system where you have to spend credits to unlock them and that increases until a set amount where its then you need to purchase it with platinum at a set cost for anything else. For weapon slots I'd say 12 is a good number, that allows you to have up to 4 different weapons for the Primary, Secondary, and Melee slots. Warframes I'd only say 3 since it gives the newer player an incentive to really delve in and find the Warframe they really want to stick to and go get it. Removing the system entirely however I could see becoming a slight problem. Why? Because DE needs to make money somehow, sure there is Prime Access (I call "Monthly Subscription") and the other goodies like the bundles you get from Steam (If you play on Steam) but players want the more slot spaces so they can be completionists (Like myself) and gather every weapon and every warframe in the game. DE even nudges you toward doing so with the Codex and the removal of event items that you couldn't even get (Because why wave a warframe that can never be gotten in a completionist's face... Seriously... Why DE q.q). Is making you pay real life currency to increase your inventory in a game where loot and equipment collection is a big deal a bad thing? Maybe, but does it help DE continue to make amazing, high-quality, content? Probably.
Neguro Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 I have 17 weapon slots and 5 warframe slots, and I never bought platinum. This system urges players not to keep stuff they won't use and, to me, it gives a sensation of really having your own and personalized arsenal. So, I don't think this is a huge problem. Participate to events and you will earn free slots ! However, I think getting them as a mastery reward isn't a bad idea at all, mastery ranks aren't properly exploited. For instance, I didn't know about these extractors capacity until I was rank 10.
Magnagar Posted June 29, 2014 Posted June 29, 2014 (edited) I personally think the platinum itself needs to fluctuate more. The price on slots and cosmetics are fine if obtaining more platinum wasn't as hard as it is now. Definitely with a new player, it will be very difficult for them to gain anything since they are limited to where to farm(since everything is locked away), to finally being able to upgrade, to building new frames/weapons(since recourses are hidden in higher level areas usually. Plus the time to wait on your build to finish), to joining a clan and trading(since you have to be rank 2 or 3 to even start trading and only then are you allow to get in your dojo if someone from your clan is hosting or invited by your own clan mate). I barely got a friend in my clan and once in, I would have to invite him to "our" own dojo just so we can trade and he's limited to 4 trades since his mastery rank is 3. Which is total unnecessary limitation. There needs to be a better system then how trading is now, because for a new player to try and obtain a narrow minded mod and then trying to sell it over trade, is a ridiculous thing to do since majority of players have them already and isn't enough to sell to make another frame slot. It's a very frustrating system with a very very long process for anything to get done. In order to get your Mastery Rank high, you'll need more slots so you can keep your favorable weapons and delete the ones you don't like so you can have an open slot for the next item. Not only that but truthfully, being limited to warframe slots is pathetic. So you don't like nova as much as Loki but you want her. You've spend time farming for her parts and materials to wait 84 hours just so you can get her to rank 30 and then delete?? I dont think that's fair.Maybe have another way to obtain platinum other then buying them with real money and trades. A system where it would require to participate in a certain event and once completed, you obtain a decent amount of platinum... Like 100. That's enough to buy a slot or two and a color scheme. Maybe this type of event can happen once a week? But something to help out players who don't have platinum and can still get it weekly with a reasonable amount. 100 platinum is 5 warframe slots which is nothingn that alone is 420 hours for 5 frames worth building time. Not including the farming. Edited June 29, 2014 by Magnagar
OccasionalEffort Posted June 30, 2014 Author Posted June 30, 2014 You guys act like DE makes bank off Slot sales. They make bank off Exclusive Packs like Prime Access and Accessories. Slots are an archaic monetization system. The biggest downfall of F2P games is limitations. Take them away or atleast offer ways to work around them without spending money and people will flock to your games... this is one of the reasons Games like Rift and Defiance which were nearly dead have revived and are thriving. They've made plenty of money over the years off Founder packs and Prime Access and people in general buying cosmetic items. Slot purchasing is not needed and should just be removed in general. you might not think it but lot people see stupid little things like that and are immediately turned off. I know myself any game that limits my inventory space and forces me to purchase premium currency to expand it pisses me off only reason I didn't care for this is because I had plenty of plat from Founder packs. Also that 100 plat you get at the start is sort of Redundant... its like DE gives it to new players because they know the slot system is messed up and it's like here use this so you don't quit in 5 minutes. The plain and simple is Plat is expensive. the only time I really buy plat is if I get it from exclusive packs or its 75% off. If they wanted or needed better Plat sales they would of lowered the price a long time ago. In fact I think its quite the opposite and their main concern right now isn't so much monetization as much as increasing player base because lets face it the game has been stagnate for awhile if not declining. Update 14 hype might bring back a few who took a break but after a week the hype will die and they probably won't come back. This isn't the highest priority your right but its something quick and easy that shouldn't even be a topic of discussion it should just be fixed. Larger priorities should be Streaming community support and new player rewards. As much as people will deny it Streaming is a huge impact on games sales and popularity on the pc platform. Look at games like Dayz and rust. Streaming community single handedly propelled those games into million dollar titles. When a new crappy early access game comes out ( aka stomping lands ) and is utterly crap but because some guy streamed it while having 20k viewers its the top selling game on steam for nearly a week despite being utterly unplayable and not receiving any updates. Its just one of many untapped veins DE as failed to dig into and while I understand their idea that constantly releasing content will keep the playerbase growing and happy its not the only thing they need to do. Community Stream support and supporting fan sites is a good step forward.

KirukaChan Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 I started playing sometime into update 9 (Nekros came out not long after I started). I never really had an issue with inventory space at the start. I was quite happy with my Latron, Bronco, and Kestrel. If anything, new players have it easier now, since the trade system exists and it's not hard to get a decent amount of plat if all you're looking to buy is inventory slots.

A new player can't just go and farm for items that are worth selling, because they need to already have better gear in order to get through those difficult stages. Unless you have a friend who can hold your hand for the first month or two, you won't be seeing platinum for a while. Until you reach a certain phase with upgrades and mods.
