Heavy Pistols: The Good And The Bad (For Those Who Don't Know)

Question

The main heavy pistols in Warframe are the Kraken, Lex, Lex Prime, and Seer. Seer and Kraken are both frowed upon by the majority of the community, and the Lex has a very slow, undesirable fire rate. The Lex Prime is usually thought to be the only viable heavy pistol, but this is incorrect. This information should help players make better decisions on which heavy pistol is best for them. I do not recommend the Aklex, due to the fact that it is solely against the main purpose of the Lex, being a sniper pistol. That is why I do not have the Aklex here.

The Lex is basically a sniper pistol, with great accuracy, fairly high damage, but a very slow fire rate.

The Lex's physical damage output unmodded is 70, with the most damage being piercing.

The Kraken is a Grineer heavy pistol, said to be vauled by marksman for its accuracy. The Kraken fires a two shot burst, but it has insanely high recoil making the second shot miss targets even at mid-rage if aiming for the head for neck.

The Kraken deals 84 physical damage per burst (2 shots), and is highest in impact damage. The Kraken is usually frowned upon the most, but sacrificing some DPS for Steady Hands makes the Kraken much better than usually given credit for.

The Seer is Captain Vor's Orokin-Grineer hybrid pistol, which has a fair fire rate, good damage, and a high zoom. However, the Seer's projectiles have travel time. If you can lead your shots, the Seer is a great upgrade to the Lex damage-wise.

The Seer has 84.9 physical damage, and the damage is completely balanced throughout all types of damage, making it useful against all factions. The Seer is a great weapon, and if time is invested into it, it can become a very powerful sidearm.

The Lex Prime is the Prime version of the Lex, obviously. It has very noticeable upgrades in fire rate and damage output.

The Lex Prime, like the Lex, deals mostly piercing damage. It deals 85 physical damage, barely beating out the Seer for highest physical damage. The Lex Prime also has great critical capabilities.

I hope this helps you decide which heavy pistol is best for you. The Seer is my favorite.

Okay, on the issue of whether Marelok is a heavy pistol or not. Let's take a look at what we know of it and its real equivalent.

The name Marelok is fairly clearly a reference to the Mare's Leg, a rifle with a shortened barrel and stock. Key term here; rifle and shortened. In the Marelok's description on the Warframe wiki, it says "the Marelok is essentially a cut-down Grinlok" (and the Grinlok is a lever-action repeating rifle, exactly the same as a Winchester Model 1892... which, when shortened, is called a Mare's Leg) - so yes, we can all agree that it fits the idea of being a Mare's Leg rifle. Closer inspection of the Marelok, as noted on the wiki, says that the gun is indeed a modified Grinlok with shortened attributes. So what this clearly says is that Marelok is actually a rifle (it even contributes to Rifle Kills achievements in-game), but cut down to secondary size. Thus, it is not a pistol.

However, according to the ATF, the Puma 92 (named The Bounty Hunter) is a Mare's Leg and yet is designated a pistol. Marelok's high damage and slow rate of fire could mean it's a heavy pistol.

Looking at the evidence, I think we can all agree that the Marelok is not a pistol, let alone a heavy one. It is, in fact, a small rifle classed as a secondary that is more effective than a big rifle classed as a primary. Warframe logic.
