I wrote this one up a while back, and just never got round to properly uploading it. I realize theres some missing mission names, I'll get round to it. If not TL:DR you will see some empty entries, just can't find info without searching forever. Otherwise I'll expand on shorter ones as need be. Any info is appreciated, people tend to know more about specific things.

Mercury

or Hermes: Craters and minor deities. Roman God Mercury

 

Terminus – Terminus is the god who protects boundary markers, his name being the latin word for said markers. Sacrifices were performed to sanctify each boudnary stone, and landowners held a festival called the "Terminalia" on February 23. Livestock and offerings of crops, honeycombs and wine were placed by landowners with intersecting boundary markers followed by a feast and hymns.

 

M Prime – Mercury prime?

 

Caloris – 1550km crater. “Calor” is latin for heat.

 

Elion – Hebrew Elijah?(uplifting?) The Lord is Mygodo? Elion – “Most high”. Gertrude Belle? 1988 nobel prize winner (leukemia/gout) Phoenician deity? Melchizedek priest.

 

Lares – In Ovids Fasti, Mercury is tasked to escort the numph Laranda to the underworld. He falls in love andshe bears him 2 children, or “Lares”, invisible household gods.

 

Tolstoj – An ancient, 95km crater named after Leo ?Tolstoj, a Russian writer(War and peace, Anna Karenina)

Apollodorus – Radiating troughs crater.(The Spider) Apollodorus of Damascus is credited as the architect of the pantheon in Rome.

 

Venus

Venus, or the Greek goddess Aphrodite, is Cytherean - Aphrodite/Venus was born from the sea foam aty an island called Cythera. Old timey scientists suggested “Cytherean” in lieu of the correct, but tasteless  ”Venerean”. Venusian being etymologically messy as well.

 

Kiliken – Kiliken/Kileghen, is part of a Maasal(Kenya/N Tanzania)myth about an orphan  boy. Kileken being the morning star and Leken the evening star. Was also thought to be 2 different celestial bodies.

 

Unda – Latin for “wave”, referring to the seafoam origins of Venus/Aphrodite. Also a genus of Amoebozoa, which looks kinda foamy, or spit.

 

E. Gate – Earth gate?

 

Venera – Russian probes developed by the soviet union(1961-1984 Space program Venera) Venera being Russian for Venus. Venera probes were the first man-made devices to enter the atmosphere of another planet. IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

 

V Prime – Venus Prime?

 

Ishtar – Babylonian Goddess of love, fertility, war and sexuality.

 

Vespen – Literal translation of Hesperus, the name of Venus(as a star) in the evenings, half brother of Phosphorus(Eosphoras) or roman Lucifer(“Light bringer”) ie morning star.

 

Linea – Latin for “line”. In planetary geology it refers to long(dark or bright) lines on a planet or moons surface(stretch marks pun?)

 

Tessera – Latin “Tessella” ie small square. From greek word akjfdbaldjf ie tesserae or “four”. Roman mosaics depicting Venus?

Fossa – In planetary geology it refers to a long, narrow depression(trough) on a planet or moon. Latin for “ditch” or “trench”. In anatomy it can be considered the same(a depression on a bone, a shallow depression  on the lateral wall of the pelvis, where the ovary lies) DE likes these jokes it seems.

Gaia – Primal Greek Goddess of Earth. The great mother of all – Roman Terra – Expand

 

Oro – Spanish/Italian for “Gold”

 

Eurasia – The combined continental  landmass of Europe and asia.

 

Pacific – The largest of the oceans, the mariana trench also falls in its division.

 

Lua – Lua was a Goddess to whom Roman Soldiers sacrificed captured weapons. Consort of Jupiter. Also the name of the moon?

 

Mantle – Refers to the earths mantle :P

 

Lith – A combining form meaning “stone”(megalith, monolith etc.)

 

Mariana – Mariana trench. Deepest known point on the ocean floor with a maximum known depth of 10.911km.

 

Cambria- Cambrian geological period. 541 to 589 million years ago. After the latin word for “wales”, Britians best Cambrian rocksite.

 

Everest. Earths tallest mountain.

 

Mars

Roman God of war. Greek Ares

 

Tharsis – Thars Montes is 3 large shield volcanoes. Tharsis derives fro mthe Greco-latin transliteration of biblical Tarshish, the most western known land.

 

Hellas. Hellas planitia is a plain located within the huge impact basin Hellas. The largest visible impact crater in the solar system( 2nd or 3rd largest physically) Hellas in Greek means “Greece”.

 

Arcadia- A telescopic, albedo feature on mars. Named after a mountainous region in Greece, in turn the home of the God Pan.

 

Alator – A celtic interpretation, “Mars Alato” the “Huntsman” or “Cherisher” expand

 

Arval – The Arval brothers were a priesthood devoted to sacrifices for ther Lares and gods for good harvests to mars. The called upon to drive off “Rust” both wheat fungus and red oxide, a double meaning, they described Mars as “savage” Ferus.

 

Ara – The “The Ara Martis” was the earliest altar known dedicated to Mars. “Ara” being roman for altar. Oh my.

Vallis – Latin word for valley or….?

 

Olympus – Olympus Mons is the second highest known mountain in the solar system(22km) and the highest on a planet. Mount Olympus is also the home of the Greek pantheon.

 

Silvanus – God of the woods and fields, a possible offshoot of Mars. Females may not worship him.

 

Augustus – Augustus was a honorific to Gods or Goddesses, including Mars, which marks the affiliation of a deity with imperial cult(The “increaser”, the “venerable”)

 

War – War is hell.

Phobos

Greek God of fear. Twin brother to Deimos(Terror), son of Aphrodite and Ares. Phobos is the larger of Mar' 2 moons. Both were discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall. Predicted to collide with Mars in 50 million years or break up.

 

Roche – Crater, “Edward Roche” Astronomer.

 

Skyresh – Character in Gullivers travels.

 

Stickney – Angeline Stickney Hall, wife of Asaph Hall. Stickney being her maiden name, a crater on Phobos named after her. The largest on Phobos it is 9.5km large.

 

Drunlo - Character in Gullivers travels.

 

Limtoc – A smaller crater within Stickney, Character in Gullivers travels.

 

Hall – Asaph Hall, discovered Phobos and Deimos in 1877.

 

Reidresal - Character in Gullivers travels.

 

Clustril - Character in Gullivers travels.

 

Kepler – The only named ridge on Phobos, Kepler Dorsam, after astronomer Johannes Kepler.

 

Monolith – A large boulder(85m across) near Strickney. The area is a proposed landing spot for an unmanned mission by a Canadian space agency(Phobos Reconnaissance and International  Mars Exploration) or PRIME (heh).

Ceres

A dwarf planet(950km and largest in the belt) lying within the asteroid belt, named after the Roman Goddess of agriculture.


Pallas – One of the largest asteroids(and slightly larger than Vesta) also known as Pallas Athena. Greek Goddess of Wisdom, courage, law, just war etc. Having taken the name “Pallas” after accidently killing her. Expand


Bode – John Elert Bode, astronomer who suggested there might be another planet between Mars and Jupiter based on the Titius-Bode Law.


Nuovo – Latin for feminine “new”


Ludi – Latin plural, “games”, singular(game, sport, play) were games held for the public people of Rome. Ludi Ceriules were a 7 day festival dedicated to Ceres in April.


Albedo – Albedo is the reflection coefficient, from the latin word Albedo(“Whiteness”) It is the diffuse reflectivity or reflecting power of a surface.(Albino?)


Vedic – Or Vedas, compromises of ancient texts from india. It includes some of the oldest hindu scriptures. Soma is a Vedic ritual drink, said to grant immortality.


Varro – Marcus Verentius Varro, an ancient Roman writer an scholar, wrote a few works regarding her(Ceres?) theology grouping and comments on wedding rituals.


Thon – Husband of Polydamna, Egyptians. She slipped Helen, wife of Merelaus, nepenthe, a drug that “has the power of robbing the grief and anger, banishing painful memories.”


Olla-  is the pot in which exta(see boss planet) was stewed. The mallet god Sucellus is known to carry one.


Lex – The latin word for “law, statute”, an adjective which is usually named for the sponsoring legislation. The noun lex is considered feminine, grammatical gender.


Kiste – Chest. Ceres bears a torch, sometimes two, and rides a chariot drawn by snakes, or she sits on the sacred kiste that conceals the onjects of her mystery rites.


Ker – Ker is the proto-indo-european root, meaning “to grow”, from which Ceres may be derived, possibly words such as “create”, “cereal” etc.


Draco – The constellation Draco, to which Ceres north pole points towards.


Cinxia – Cinxia functions within the belt(Cingylum) that the bride wears to symbolize her husband is “belted and bound”. Asteroid belt reference?


Cerium – Cerium is a chemical element which the symbol Ce and atomic number 58. Soft, silver, ductile metal which easily oxidizes in the air. Named after the planet.


Casta – Casta, or Castus/Castitas, is an adjective meaning morally pure or guiltless, and could refer to offerings without pollutants. Ceres prefers her offerings casta.


Egeria – An asteroid, named by Urbain Le Verrier, after Egeria of Aricia, a nymph, Italy, the wife of Numa Pompilius, second king of Rome(See Saturn)


Hapke – Asteroid belt discovered by Bowell E. Possibly named after  Brace Hapke, set of parameters(Hapke parameters) used to determine the albedo.


Gefion – Or Gefjon, a Norse Goddess associated with ploughing and a grouping of asteroids. The were previously part of the Ceres family and Minerva family.


Exta – The “divine entrails” of a sacrificed animal, compromised of the gallbladder, liver, heart and lungs.


Jupiter

Roman King of the Gods, of sky and thunder(Zeus) in Roman mythology he negotiates with Numa to establish principles such as sacrifice.


Thebe – Fourth of Jupiters moons, discovered by Stephen P. Synnott, named after a mythological nymph(@(*()$ which one?)


Amalthea – Discovered by Edward Emerson Barnard, the third moon and named after the most frequently mentioned foster mother of Zeus. “Tender Goddess”.


Io – The innermost of the Galilean moons, 4th largest in the solar system. Discovered by Galileo Galilei. Io was a priestess of Hera(wife of Zeus) who was seduced by Zeus, turned into a cow(heifer) by Hera, who sent a 100 eyed guard Argus Panoptes to watch her, who was distracted and slain by Hermes, which let Io roam the world. Hera sent a maddening gadfly to sting her, who then wandered to Egypt where she was restored by Zeus.


Metis – The innermost moon, named after the first wife of Zeus, discovered by Synnott. Metis was of the titan generation.


Callisto – Discovered by Galileo, third largest in the solar system. Callisto was a nymph, daughter of Lycaon, who was turned into a bear and set among the stars.


Andrastea – Second moon, discovered by David C. Jewitt and G Edward Danielson. Greek nymph, daughter of Zeus and Ananke.  Or a nymph charged by Rhea to nurture infant Zeus. The astronomers used the former, based on Rhesus.


Themisto – Daughter of the river god Inachus, who became the mother of Arcas by Zeus. Discovered in 1975, lost, and rediscovered in 2000.


Carpo – Discovered in 2005, daughter of Zeus. One of the Horae personifications of  seasons(time) also possibly known as Damia, “The one who brings food”, ripening, harvesting.


Carme – Mother of Brito Manits(by Zeus). A female Cretan spirit who assisted I nthe grain harvest of Demeter’s Cretan predecessor.


Ananke – Discovered by Seth Barnes. Nicholsan, named after the perasonification of necessity, the mother of Morai by Zeus. Considered to be the mother of Fate, mortals or gods.


Elara – Discovered by Charles Dillon Perrine. A mortal princess, daughter of king Orchomenus and mother of the giant Tityos by Zeus.


Ganymede – Seventh moon, largest in the solar system. Discovered by Galileo. A divine hero from Troy, described by Homer as the most beautiful of mortals. Abducted by Zeus to serve as a cupbearer.

Europa
Sixth largest moon in the solar system and sixth closest moon of Jupiter discovered in 1616 by Galileo Galilei. A Phoenician noblewoman, also abducted by Zeus who transformed himself into a white bull to hide among her father's herds. When Europa and helpers arrived, she saw the bull and eventually climbed on its back, enamored. Zeus ran to the sea, swimming with her on his back to the island of Crete where he revealed himself, making her the first Queen of Crete. The continent Europe has taken her name. The daughter of the Phoenician King of Tyre, Agenor


Abaddon - In Revelation 9:11, Abaddon is described as "The Destroyer" the angel of the abyss and as the king of a plague of locusts resembling horses with crowned human faces, women's hair, lions' teeth, wings, iron breast-plates, and a tail with a scorpion's stinger that torments for five months anyone who does not have the seal of God on their foreheads.


Eligor - Eligos (also Abigor or Eligor) is a Great Duke of Hell, ruling 60 legions of demons. He discovers hidden things and knows the future of wars and how soldiers should meet. He also attracts the favor of lords, knights and other important persons.


Orias - Orias (also spelled Oriax) is a Great Marquis of Hell, and has thirty legions of demons under his command. He knows and teaches the virtues of the stars and the mansions of the planets (the influence of each planet depending on the astrological sign in which it is in a specific moment and the influence of that sign on an individual depending on how the zodiac was configured at the moment of his/her birth or at the moment of asking a question to the astrologist); he also gives dignities, prelacies, and the favour of friends and foes, and can metamorphose a man into any shape.

Baal - According to le Grand Grimoire, Bael is the head of the infernal powers. He is also the first demon listed in Wierus' Pseudomonarchia daemonum. According to Wierus, Bael is first king of Hell with estates in the east. He has three heads: a toad, a man, and a cat. He also speaks in a raucous, but well formed voice, and commands 66 legions. Bael teaches the art of invisibility, and may be the equivalent of Baal, one of the Seven princes of Hell.

Armaros - Armârôs was the eleventh on a list of 20 leaders of a group of 200 fallen angels called Grigori or "Watchers." in the Book of Enoch. The name means "cursed one" or "accursed one". The name 'Armaros' is likely a Greek corruption of what may be an Aramaic name; Armoni is possibly the original. Michael Knibb, Professor of Old Testament Studies at King's College London, lists the meaning of his name as being "the one from Hermon".

Marax - Morax is a Great Earl and President of Hell, having thirty-six legions of demons under his command. He teaches Astronomy and all other liberal sciences, and gives good and wise familiars that know the virtues of all herbs and precious stones. He is depicted as a big bull with the face of a man. His name seems to come from Latin 'morax', that delays, that stops.

Ose - Ose is a Great President of Hell, ruling three legions of demons. He makes men wise in all liberal sciences and gives true answers concerning divine and secret things;  he also brings insanity to any person the conjurer wishes, making him/her believe that he/she is the creature or thing the magician desired, or makes that person think he is a king and wearing a crown, or a Pope. Ose is depicted as a leopard that after a while changes into a man.His name seems to derive from Latin 'os', mouth, language, or 'osor', that who abhors.

Shax - Shax[4] (also spelled Chax, Shan, Shass, Shaz, and Scox) is a Great Marquis of Hell, and has power over 30 legions of demons on evil horses. He takes away the sight, hearing and understanding of any person under the conjurer's request, and steals money out of kings' houses, carrying it back to the people. He also steals horses and everything the conjurer asks. Shax can also discover hidden things if they are not kept by evil spirits, and sometimes gives good familiars, but sometimes those familiars deceive the conjurer. He should not be bothered too often.

Shax is thought to be faithful and obedient, but is a great liar and will deceive the conjurer unless obliged to enter a magic triangle drawn on the floor. He will then speak marvellously and tell the truth. He knows when lies are told and uses these to teach lessons.He is depicted as a stork that speaks with a hoarse but subtle voice; his voice changes into a beautiful one once he entered the magic triangle.

Shagan - Zagan (also Zagam) is a Great King and President of Hell, commanding over thirty-three legions of demons. He makes men witty; he can also turn wine into water, water into wine, and blood into wine (according to Pseudomonarchia Daemonum blood into oil, oil into blood, and a fool into a wise man). Other of his powers is that of turning metals into coins that are made with that metal (i.e., gold into a gold coin, copper into a copper coin, etc.).Zagan is depicted as a griffin-winged bull that turns into a man after a while.

Paimon - Paimon (also Paimonia, Paymon) is one of the Kings of Hell, more obedient to Lucifer than other kings are, and has two hundred legions of demons under his rule. Paimon teaches all arts, philosophies and sciences, and secret things; he can reveal all mysteries of the Earth, wind and water, what the mind is, and where it is, and everything the conjurer wants to know, gives good familiars, dignities and confirms them, binds men to the conjurer's will.Paimon is depicted as a man with an effeminate face, wearing a precious crown, and riding a dromedary. Before him often goes a host demons with the shape of men, playing trumpets, cymbals, and any other sort of musical instruments.

Beleth - Beleth also spelled Bilet, Bileth and Byleth is a mighty and terrible king of Hell, who has eighty-five legions of demons under his command. He rides a pale horse, and all kind of music is heard before him, according to most authors on demonology and the most known grimoires. According to Pseudomonarchia Daemonum Ham, Noah's son, was the first in invoking him after the flood, and wrote a book on Mathematics with his help. Beleth gives all the love of men and women he is commanded until the conjurer is satisfied.

Sorath - "If one had written correctly with Hebrew letters (right to left) and then read correctly (also from right to left), the following would have resulted: 60, Samech, 6 Waw; 600 was written by esotericists as 200 + 400: 200 Resch + 400 Taw. Hence, we get 666, which in Hebrew letters spells “Sorat.” Sorat is also the corresponding word in Greek. Sorat has meant “Demon of the Sun” since ancient times. Every star has its good spirit — its intelligence — and its evil spirit — its demon. The adversary of the good powers of the sun is called Sorat. Christ was always the Representative of the Sun, namely, the Intelligence of the Sun. Sorat is, then, the Adversary of Christ Jesus"

Valac - Valac is the mighty Great President of Hell, having thirty legions of demons under his command. Valac is said to give true answers about hidden treasures; he reveals where serpents can be seen, and delivers them harmless to the magician. He is said to appear as a small poor boy with angel wings riding on a two-headed dragon.

Valefor - Valefar (or Malaphar, Malephar, Valafar, Valefor) is a Duke of Hell. He tempts people to steal and is in charge of a good relationship among thieves. Valefar is considered a good familiar by his associates "till they are caught in the trap."He commands ten legions of demons.He is represented as a lion with the head of a man, or as a lion with the head of a donkey.

Lillith - In Jewish folklore, from the 8th–10th century Alphabet of Ben Sira onwards, Lilith becomes Adam's first wife, who was created at the same time (Rosh Hashanah) and from the same earth as Adam. This contrasts with Eve, who was created from one of Adam's ribs. The legend was greatly developed during the Middle Ages, in the tradition of Aggadic midrashim, the Zohar, and Jewish mysticism. In the 13th century writings of Rabbi Isaac ben Jacob ha-Cohen, for example, Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient to him and then would not return to the Garden of Eden after she mated with archangel Samael. The resulting Lilith legend is still commonly used as source material in modern Western culture, literature, occultism, fantasy, and horror.

Kokabiel - Kokabiel also spelled Kôkabîêl, Kôkhabîêl, Kakabel, Kochbiel, Kokbiel, Kabaiel, or Kochab, considered the 'angel of the stars,' is a fallen angel, the fourth mentioned of the 20 Watcher leaders of the 200 fallen angels in the Book of Enoch.His name is generally translated as "star of God,"which is fitting since it has been said that Kokabiel taught astrology to his associates. According to The Book of The Angel Raziel, Kokabiel is a holy angel; in other apocryphal lore, however, he is generally considered to be fallen. Kokabiel is said to command an army of 365,000 spirits.

Gamygyn - In demonology Gamigin (also Gamygin, Gamigm or Samigina) is a Great Marquis of Hell who rules over thirty legions of demons. He teaches all liberal sciences and gives an account of the souls of those who died in sin and who drowned in the sea, speaking with a rough voice. He also answers what is asked about, and stays with the conjurer until he or she is satisfied.Gamigin is depicted as a little horse or a donkey which changes form into a man under the conjurer's request.

Naamah - Naamah appears in the Zohar as one of the mates of the archangel Samael. She, along with Lilith, causes epilepsy in children. According to Zohar she is a succubus and fallen angel, and is generally regarded as an aspect or relation of Lilith. After Cain killed Abel, Adam separated from Eve for 130 years. During this time, two female spirits, Lilith and Naamah would visit Adam and bear his children, who became the Plagues of Mankind. Also according to Zohar, Naamah corrupted Aza and Azael.


Saturn
 Saturns moons, the roman god of agriculture and the father of Zeus/Jupiter. The king of the first pantheon and titans. Greek Cronus. Saturday derives from his name.

Cassini – Spacecraft  studying Saturn and its moons in an ongoing mission since 1997. Cassini-Huygens spacecraft.

Phoebe – Discovered by William Henry Pickering, Cassinis first encounter. “Radiant, bright, prophetic”. Phoebe, an original titan, daughter of Uranus and Gaia, and grandmother to Artemis, Apollo and Asteria.

Numa – Numa Pompilius. Second king of Rome who spread worship of the God Saturn.


Keeler – A main belt asteroid discovered by A.R. Klemola. Named after James Edward Keeler, an astronomer who also discovered 2 asteroids.


Aegaeon –The “Sea goat”.  Discovered by Curolyn Porco. Named after one of the three Hekatonkheires, or “hundred handed ones”.  Children of Gaia and Uranus. When Uranus saw how ugly they were at birth he pushed them back up Gaia, causing her great pain and setting in motion the overthrow of Uranus by Cronus, who later imprisoned them in Tartarus. Guarded by the dragon Campe until Zeus rescued them to help in the fight against Cronus and the Titans. After the war they became the guards of Tartarus.


Rhea – Daughter of Gaia and Uranus, mother of Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hestia, Hera and Zeus. The Titaness deity known as “the mother of gods”. The second moon largest moon of Saturn, discovered by Giovanni Domenico Cassini.


Tethys- Moon of Saturn discovered by Cassini. Named after a Titaness, daughter of Gaia and Uranus and was considered a sea goddess, mother of the Nile, Alpheus, Meander and about 3000 daughters called the Oceanids.


Diome – Discovered by Cassini. Dione is a titaness and daughter of Gaia and either Uranus or Aether. Otherwise Oceanus and Tethys, thus, an oceanid.


Enceladus – Discovered by D. William Herschel. In Greek mythos, Enceladus was one of the gigantes, the enormous children of Gaia, fertilized by the blood of castrated Uranus. Disabled by a spear from Athena, he was buried under  Sicily, underneath mount Edina.

Epimetheus – Discovered by Larson, Fountain and Richard Walker(initial first.) A moon of Saturn. Epimetheus, or “hindsight”, and his brother Prometheus, “foresight”. They were a pair of Titans who “acted as representatives of mankind”. Epimetheus was entrusted to giving all the animals a positive trait, but when it came to humans, lacking foresight, he found there was nothing left. He was also the one to accept Pandora from the gods.

Iapetus -  Discovered by Cassini. Third largest satellite of Saturn,  11th in the solar system and largest not to be in hydrostatic equilibrium. Iapetus, or Jupetus, was a Titan, son of Gaia and Uranus and (by an Oceanid named Asia or Clymene)father of Atlas, Prometheus, Epimetheus and Menoetius.  Brother of Cronus. Known as “The piercer” and mentioned by scholars as the god of mortality.


Hyperion - Discovered by William Bond, George Bard, William Lassle. It was the first non-round moon to be discovered. Named after Hyperion, the Titan God of watchfulness and observation, brother to Cronus. Hyperion fathered Helios(Sun), Selene(Moon) and Eos(dawn).


Janus – Discovered by Audioin Dollfus. Named after the two-faced Roman god of beginnigs and transitions, doors, passages, past and future, war and peace etc. In times of peace the doors of his temple was closed and in times of war flung open. Janus temple doors were rarely closed.


Mimas – Disocvered by William Herschel. The smallest know astronomical body that is rounded due to self gravitation. Mimas was one of the gigantes, sons of Gaia who had serpents for legs and was born fully armored. Slain by Hephaestus or by Ares and Zeus.

Methone – A small, egg shaped astrological body orbiting Saturn discovered by Cassini. Methone was one of the 7 daughters of Alcyoneus, known as Alkyonides. After their father was slain by Heracles they threw themselves into the sea, where they were transformed into kingfishers(Halcyons) by Amphirite, sea goddess and wife of Poseidon.

Anthe – Discovered by Cassini imaging team. A small natural satellite of Saturn between Mimas and Enceladus. Also one of the Alkyonides.

Pallene- Discovered by Cassini Imaging Team. A very small natural satellite of Saturn between Mimas and Enceladus. Again, one of the Alkyonides.

Calypso – Discovered by Dan Pascu, P Kenneth Seidelmann, William A. Baum, Douglas G Carrie. Calypso, a nymph and daughter of Atlas. Living on the island of Ogygia where she kept Odysseus prisoner for several(5/7) years in order to make him her immortal husband. Wanting to return to his wife, Penelope, Athena asks Zeus to order Calypso to free him. Zeus sends Hermes to deliver the message, and although angered, Calypso sents Odysseus on his way with provisions. Her name means “to cover” or “to conceal”,”to deceive”etc.

Titan – Discovered by Christiaan Huygens. Saturns largest moon, second largest in the solar system and bigger than mercury, also the only moon with a substantial atmosphere. Named after the Greek Titans, the first pantheon that was overthrown by the Olympian pantheon. (Zeus etc.)

Helene – Discovered by Laques and Lecacheax. Named after Helen of Troy, granddaughter of Cronus(Saturn), daughter of Zeus and Leda and considered the most beautiful woman in the world. Notable history is Troy, or expand.

Telesto – Discovered by Cassini Imaging Team. Telesto, or “success”, is a sea goddess and one of the daughters of Oceanus and Tethys. Hesiod describes her as “wearing a yellow peplos”.

M Prime – Mercury prime?

Yes, no idea, I'd assume it's "Mercury central" re the above.

 

 

Elion – Hebrew Elijah?(uplifting?) The Lord is Mygodo? Elion – “Most high”. Gertrude Belle? 1988 nobel prize winner (leukemia/gout) Phoenician deity? Melchizedek priest.

Elijah derives, to my knowledge, from 'אלי' and 'ישע', errm, 'my god is (my) salvation?'.

עליון... If pressed, I'd say 'supernum' in Latin, or Super in English. Literally 'most above', commonly translated as 'most high'.

 

 

E. Gate – Earth gate?

Again yes, and again no idea. And again I'd assume it's a figurative gateway, e.g. the "space elevator".

However, if that's the case, I'd wonder why the nomenclature is different between E. Gate and M. Prime.

Clearly, one of those isn't since E. Prime also exists.

 

 

Linea – (stretch marks pun?)

... I'm some combination of LMAO and o.O right now. :P

 

Google lists Cholistan as a desert in Pakistan. I don't see the relevance though, so *shrug*?

Similarly, it lists Lazrac as a plateau of karast limestone in France.

Wouldn't it be awesome if level desigbers drew some inspiration from this? Just some subtle nuances or influences derived from the root name. I am sure it would be their most ambitious undertaking to date. This is at minimum a years worth of dedicated level design focus right here at least. Hell maybe 2 or 3.

Actually, so far as I can tell, every non-rail node is named for an actual astronomical feature. The rail nodes are all named after extinguished cities on earth(most ancient, but one died off as recently as the 18th century).

 

It would be nice to have those added(You've got most of the inspirations of their names down, but not the things that were named after them).
