How To Forma My Soma The 4Th Time (And On?) ...

Question

for pure DPS and disregarding ammo consumtion. I know this topic is ages old and i did quite alot of research already...

So far i went for 3xVs for Serration, Heavy C., Split C., Vital Sense and point strike, all no brainers.

Now i'm not sure anymore... people seem to have different opinions about usefulness of Hammer Shot, Shred, Speed Trigger, Metal Auger, Ammo Drop mod, Elementals etc. (got all of that)... Now like i said, if i'm just after killing stuff most efficiently all around (without faction specialisation), how should i proceed? Thanks alot in advance! :)

All around dmg you would have to use Viral i believe? def hammer shot shred and point strike

for all around dmg i think you need to focus more on pure dmg for the slash from it, there is also a rifle slash mod as well, personally i use corrosive but i dont go against corpus very often and if i do i switch it up for them to magnetic, since corrosive works just fine against infested, wonders against grineer and quite well against corrupted

edit: oh yeah blast would be useful, only thing i didnt like was when a mob got knocked down like the heavy i was aiming for wasnt sure if it died among the masses till it got back up, just an fyi on it

edit2: oh yeah my soma is 4 forma'd as well btw and i get bout 12k dps minimum on it

TBH, to answer your question you kind of have to be faction specific :D. hammer shot and shred both scale well across all factions.

Last is elemental that scales well with a faction. Many like corrosive dmg though for void and grineer. this would require getting rid of shred or hammer shot.

If ur going for distance def/sur, i think punch through mods are 2nd to none after the basics (serration-multishots ) . I remember vectis hiting up to 4 corrupted lancers with a single shot using shred... that's 400% dps multiplier after everything else.  if not going the distance shred is nice for the speedy wind up but it isn't "efficient."

Heavy Caliber is a less than optimal choice for Soma as it relies on critical damage.  As the shot deviation is increased it actually makes getting critical shots more difficult unless you are very close to your target, something that is not ideal for a hitscan weapon.  That being said the no brainers only include Serration, Split Chamber, Vital Sense and Point Strike.  Heavy Caliber is only mandatory on weapons like Boltor Prime, Synapse and Amprex.

As for the rest you want 2x 90% elements for sure.  A third 90% element or Bane can also be used.  Speed Trigger is debatable as Shred also offers a fire rate bonus and punch through.  Some players, myself included, will argue that Speed Trigger just wastes ammo when compared to Shred.  Hammer Shot can be useful depending on the situation but again I would never use it with Heavy Caliber equipped as the damage gain from one hurts the critical damage of the other.  Metal Auger simply is not needed thanks to Shred.

As for elements, use Corrosive+Cold for Void, Magnetic+Toxin/Bane for Corpus, Radiation+Bane/Toxin/Viral for Grineer, and Corrosive+Heat/Bane for Infested.  Hammer Shot can be substituted but it is very specific so usually it is not needed unless you are only trying to take down single targets like Heavy Gunners in Void for example.

Wow, that was fast, thank you :)...

So from what i gather i can't go wrong with a - Polarity and then use elementals depending on faction (preferably Corrosive) or try Sawtooth. And i think next up would be Def Polarity for Hammer Shot cause i think i could live without Shred... ATM i'm mostly thinking against single targets.

well, i spose i should clarify since i gave a biased answer.

oh, don't ever use sawtooth. ever! lol just don't.

corrosive + Speed Triggers  gives good burst dps

i could throw a bunch more numbers at you, but i'd just stick with corrosive and shred/speed trigger cuz it's fun instuff.

Heavy caliber max'ed is a 62% dps increase assuming you hit your target just as well as w/o using it and already using max'ed serration. so it's okay mod

OK, thanks for straightening things out! I'll just go with - then and see... i have yet to max out Serration and Heavy anyway.

Oh, one more question: When applying Mods, is the order important in this case for best Effect-stacking or something?? I only know about this with sentinel behaviour preferrence...

If I understand you correctly, order does matter for multiple elemental dmg types.  you won't have to worry about this though just doing a single combo elemental type: corrosive.

doesn't consider procs and i'm certain their "red crit" calculation is off but that's a good starting point for theory crafting.

i use my own spreadsheet which has more bells and whistles but isn't as user friendly.

i have yet to max out  Heavy anyway.

And you might not want to. Hiero described it well - you probably don't want to be using HCal on the Soma. It has an average 3.5x damage multiplier for headshots, so you want to focus on making those, and adding more spread is heavily detrimental; not worth the extra ~25% damage if 2/3rds of your shots miss.

Leave HCal at R6 or R8, or leave it off entirely, imo.

I am a fan of Shred. Helps with ammo efficiency to be able to hit multiple targets in a row, and the RoF helps get past the spinup phase when you need to against heavies and bosses.

Don't use Critical Delay in a normal build - its use is relegated to a single/double tap marksman build where you use the rifle as a semi-auto, so the RoF decrease is not important.

Darzk and Hiero do argue a good point though that you should be trying for head shots with high critical strike chance weapons. Heavy Cal. makes it much harder to do this for enemies further than point blank.

It's also a very expensive mod to rank up for what you get.

With that said, I still use it cuz I just like to spray my soma around wildly when using it :D.
