Has Warframe ever given out free plat or weapon/warframe slots in events?

They give 3-4 1000 plat giveaways on every livestream.

in events, Yes... well technically

 

All event weapons come with their own slot and preinstalled catalyst. 

There are event that take place around thing outside the game, but are game related that do usually have a plat prize. But not in game ones like Cryotic Front.

 

Additionally, there is a SMALL chance of receiving 30p + a discount as a log-in reward.

The weapons in events come with a slot and a potato however.

 

Sometimes on PC there is 30 free plat if you get lucky on the login wheel. Not sure if this is on x1 and ps4 aswell.

I don't think there are plat discounts for consoles.

Weapons received in Events come with their own slot. You can sell the weapon to make use of the slot, but I would not recommend that, as the weapons are event exclusive.

 

There was also a time when all players were given free plat. I think it was...either 50 or 100. I can't recall exactly what it was for, but I think it was after some server trouble.

On the other hand, events such as the present one tend to give away mods that will become quite valuable in Trade... in about a month, when the groaning dies down. The sweet spot between "everyone already got it" and "everyone can get it again" where players need a spare or players who missed it start begging.

I remember that a week before closed beta ended and open started, everyone was given some free plat as gratitude for participating in the beta.

Also one time there was a MAJOR screwup in one of the updates that broke a lot of things and as an apology DE gave everyone some plat.

This was after the Void drop table fiasco, in which DE claimed the tables were perfectly fine, but datamining showed they absolutely were not. Uproar ensues, community mod resigns, and DE gave everyone 50 plat to apologize before encrypting the drop tables.

 

In general, however, getting free plat isn't something I'd bank on. Free slots, though, as others have said, are usually given when you acquire event weapons. Do note that, generally, these weapons have yet to be made accessible again, so it's up to you to decide if you want to keep the weapon or have a free, empty, slot.
