[DE]Momaw
No, really. This is a serious question. I'm starting to suspect that there might be a correlation between player name and player investment in the game, and by extension, player experience level and equipment quality. I advertised in recruiting tab that I was firing up a T4 defense mission and then couldn't help but notice that my team ended up with not a single number, or underscore, or l33tism...and it was 2 rank 16 players and 2 rank 17s, and we pretty much kicked &#! and took names. I look at my friends list... Only a single person with goofy name, and I can't even remember why they are on the list so it was probably a trade or something. When I go into a mission and there's That Guy just constantly failing, it seems more often than not it's somebody whose player name is a vaguely insulting pun or it has text decorations or gratuitous numbers or something. The players with names which are more identifiable as NAMES instead of random collections of characters just seem to be (more often) ....well, useful. My hypothesis is that this has some relation to self image. A player who has a online personality (an actual name) is more likely to want to "own" their registered accounts which means trying harder and taking responsibility for their reputation. The less comprehensible a name is, I propose, the less the person using it actually cares; so they are more likely to not try very hard or to not stick with the game for very long. What do you all think?
Semshol
It is actually true to an extent. I mean, I'm Semshol. That's who I am. So when I underperform, people will recognize that it's Semshol who underperformed. Not anyone else. So I guess there is some truth to that. darthdart
In Diablo 2, people spend real money and forum gold for short names of inanimate objects. These people have played Diablo 2 for years and years. Chances are, the only people with Xxdragonweedsmoker360noscopedbzryukenakumableachnarutodemonkillerxX are either joking around, or are younger people who are not as "skilled". I see where you are coming from though. Shorter more concise names in Diablo 2 meant you paid money for it for dueling purposes so you make a recognizable easy to remember name for yourself on the forums and the leaderboards online. -Mr.Meeseeks-
Mastery Rank 11 here and I feel myself to be rather good at Warframe despite the numbers in my name. I would have gotten a more original name but at first I didn't think i'd enjoy Warframe as much as I ended up doing.

DeathKoala
I must honor the glorious name of DeathKoala. Also, I'm doing a pretty shoddy job of living up to my name if I don't constantly dole out the harshness.

Sixty5
Short names are easier to type out, meaning that it is easier to get invites. Plus people who put the effort in to come up with something unique tend to put more effort in elsewhere. Originally my name here was going to just be 65, but apparently that was too short, and that made me sad.

Arcane_Intelligence
Hi, I am DarkNebula, MR14. I'm not saying I'm pro but I do pretty well most of the time (Rhino Primes with their Boltor Primes dying while I'm smashing people with Oberon and Magistar). Unfortunatelly there's so many "dark nebulas" in Steam...

Vyrn.
I agree. I tend to help and run missions with a lot of newer players, and an awful lot of them names with lots of numbers or that are some sort of joke. Most never log on again. A few might come back some days/weeks/months later for a little bit, but they never stay long. While it isn't always true, it does seem people with a bit of a unique or personal name tend to stick around a while. My name is a pain to type. As you can tell. I think mine's worse lol (sort of) A lot of people don't even realize it's an R next to a N. Most seem to think it's an M. I really don't like to think that I'm being represented by the mental image of a squirmy burrito. OT: I can't really say one way or another as I only play PUGs (or solo my void keys). And in PUGs I ignore player names unless they're unique enough that they hold my gaze. Edited October 2, 2014 by SquirmyBurrito

Quizel
On a side note, simpler names could also mean the player has been around longer-first choice preference-which could suggest more experience within the game.
