Doom_Bunny
From the latest tactical alert we see that cryotic has an unnatural affect on animals. Since both skates and cryotic are underground they appear to be the only ones effected by the cryotic. However what should happen if Kubrows where to come into contact with cryotic? Kubrows differ in both mentality and physicality from skates, so I doubt the same results would occur unless cryotic is something like a powerful drug for animals. Zachhh
I'm pretty sure it's the whole drilling thing, rather than the cryotic itself.
Doom_Bunny
That was my initial thought but Lotus' first message says otherwise.
Xeo_Nespydonum
Our drills can be implied to bring Cryotic up to the surface. When looking at the model for the provoked sand skates, you can notice their lips are blue. I'm proposing that as our rigs bring Cryotic up through the crust it passes through the layer inhabited but the skates and they accidentally consume bits of cryotic assuming it's a small creature or plant that also inhabits that layer- or maybe they eat large rocks/chunks of ore to sustain themselves as Phobos is lacking in the whole plant thing. Upon consuming Cryotic their bodily functions and senses are greatly upset i'd imagine since they are accustomed to the arid heat of Phobos. TL;DR I think the skates simply ate the Cryotic when we pulled it up and the extreme cold upset them since they like heat.
PsiWarp
I wonder if the Cryotic made the skates get sunburn (red skinned) or if that is their natural aggravated skin coloration...

Doom_Bunny
I think the colour might be their aggravated skin colour or a mutation. Skates are mostly docile as they only attack when something is threatening them/close to them.
Arlayn
I think the drills are just upsetting them. The color change could be a number of things. 1. Their skin adapts to the environment they are in. At deeper depths they have a certain skin that allows them to move through more rough rock. Compared to the brown that allows them to slide through sand with ease. 2. The drill hit them on its way to get cryotic. 3. The Cryotic when being pulled up touched the Skate, and when the skate hit the surface the immediate cold to hot occurred. 4. However the whole cryotic being the case is too contained. FAR TOO MANY Skates appear for something like that. Its possible maybe Skate nest are built around these cryotic sources as well. Maybe these are young Skate who have not fully developed their thick surface skin yet. Edited October 11, 2014 by Arlayn
RamPuppy
so if the skates are attracted to the cryotic.... now all we need is for the sand skates to form a bubble deep in soil around the cryotic masses and then start evolving into giant worms.... +5 cool points to you if your not scratching your head right now... mmmmmm Shai Hulud.... I doubt the young would surface if the nest was hit, like most forms of animal homes the young are probably protected. During the event their hide was still thick if not thicker then a normal skate. Their hide changing due to depth may be another way to explain it. That would mean that this is a subterranean (because cryotic sussposedly being found deep below the surface especially for phobos) sub-species of skate, maybe they feed off the cryotic or use it in some fashion like a nest. The masses of them rushing through layers of earth might explain the isolated tremor that occurs. Edited October 11, 2014 by Postal_pat
