Angius
Basically you need to come up with your own headcanon. All we know, is that they were created by the Orokin to fight the Sentient. Or was it to fight Infestation?
RoboDoge
I think that you lost . and , somewhere along the way. Nobody knows what Tenno are, not even DE. Or at least DE is just pretending not to know because of evil reasons.

vaugahn
Nobody knows what they are. And that's a good thing. It gives the players a blank slate to project their theories on. So basically, whatever you think is in the suit is what's in the suit.

Dalethor
Interesting thing is, most all the above replies are true, as far as they go. DE has at one time or another stated these as canonic facts, but has also for the most part allowed the player to decide how they want to view the Tenno and how they fit into the Warframe universe. The only real hard and fast origin story that DE has had would be the game that Warframe is based from, which through the game tells the story of how one man became able to use the Warframe tech, and introduced the exosuit. The rest of it, the Lotus, her origin or identity, the fate of the Orokin, origins of the current races/factions in the game have by and large been left up to the community to fill in the blanks. If you want some more glimpses into the world of the Tenno, there's some great fan fiction on this forum to be enjoyed.
Xeo_Nespydonum
Not much is known about WHAT we are other than we were engineered by the Orokin empire to combat the Sentients, a race of beings capable of "turning technology against it users." It can be assumed that we are completely organic in operation- given if we weren't the Sentients would turn us against our users. Ember Prime's lore also hints that we may have been the result of Orokin experimentation upon human children with void energy.

cloudyDev
We are humans either altered by the void or twisted by the technocyte virus (or both) because the Orokin. An ancient and now extinct civilization of humans that had control over the void. We Tenno are named after Hayden Tenno from the game Dark Sector. He was possibly the first Tenno. The technocyte virus (infested) were created by the Orokin to unleash upon their technology absorbing foes, the Sentient. When that back fired and caused them more losses (Orokin Derelict Ships are an example) than gains, they made the Tenno. God warriors with strange and unknown powers weilding the weapons of old: gun and blade. We drove back the enemy with are superior power but unfortunately we were not done killing. Our motives for our actions are unknown, but we slaughtered the Orokin at the victory ceremony. Maybe they planned to get rid of us because are usefulness had been spent, maybe we killed them out of resentment for turning us into monsters. But we killed them. Most of them at least. The low guardian now know as "The Stalker" seeks revenge for what we did to his people. In his eyes we are not innocent. It is still unclear to me why we went into stasis pods. Maybe we were forced in. Or we were waiting for another reason to fight. To be useful again. All I know is that we are here now and our mission is our own. It is what you make it. Are you guilty for the Orokin blood on your hands? Do you want to redeem yourself? Do you think you were justified in killing the Orokin? Are you the decider of who lives and dies? Most of all, do you want to learn more? All this was pieced together from codex entries, boss taunts, and other sources (such as the wiki). I believe the more I recover of my past, the more I will hate myself. I must redeem myself. Fight for the right cause. Wake up Tenno. (Go ahead and mark this as the best answer lol)
Xaelon
The Tenno were created as weapons to fight a race call the sentient who were capable of subverting/corrupting high technology in such a way that it made it impossible for the Orokin to defeat them alone. To save themselves from being wiped out by the Sentient the Orokin's last resort was to perform terrible experiments involving casting living beings into the void. Normally void energy corrupts living matter, creating the Infected. In extremely rare cases the being does not lose it's mind and becomes a Tenno instead. I believe the technocite virus was an unintended consequence of the research that created the Tenno. This makes sense as if you listen to some of the Infected Bosses they talk about "being your flesh" or something to that effect. I recall a tenno's warframe being called "a vessel" somewhere and then being explained as the means through which a tenno may channel the power of the void to create the 'space magic' we all know and love. If you remember what was said about the shifting sands event, it confirms that the Tenno's power comes from the void as the enemy base we were attacking had scanners able to detect the equipment that gave off high levels of void radiation. So what is a Tenno? A Tenno is an Orokin created bioweapon capable of wielding the power of the void to perform spectacular feats of destruction. In the words of author Arthur C. Clarke - "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

This is false, and DE has pointed out that DS is a different continuty than Warframes. What you described about "exosuits" being introduced by one man isnt even accurate for either Dark Sector or Warframe. Dark Sectors exoskeleton comes from a virus infection, while the Tennos in Warframe are just wearing suits that were built to contain their powers they gained from the Void. Rennagade
The Tenno were unfortunate human experiments of the Orikin, and among the few beings known in the past to have returned from the void. They were used as elite fighters by the Orikin to drive back their enemies, conquer the system, and in the end destroy them. Their purpose is to restore balance, though what balance is isn't really defined. If I had to guess, the Tenno's job is to make sure that humanity is always fighting, and that no side gains the upper hand. I believe their purpose is to constantly make sure that the war is ongoing, as it is during war that humanity grows(power wise) the quickest. The Tenno are most likely prepping the major forces for a massive fight by making sure that they are always struggling to keep one step ahead of the other forces while knocking them back down if they get too far ahead. The real question I want an answer to- are Tenno's abilities based on their equipment and channeling power through that equipment or do the Tenno have some kind of "raw power" that is refined by the frame.
