The Ways of Old: A Call for DE to Look at Warframe’s Past

“A call echoes across the stars – summoning the Tenno to an ancient place…”

-Original Warframe Tutorial Mission

Developers and Community of Warframe:

I’ve been with Warframe since before the Orokin era - starting at darksectOr. When Warframe was released on Steam, I downloaded it day one. Since then, so much has changed, and it’s been so much fun to watch the game grow from a small, relatively unknown game to what it is now.

However, as a veteran player, I’ve seen the style of the Tenno become less unique – some welcome this change, others do not. Although the definition of Tenno culture has changed several times (with the development of lore at DE), we’ve always been described as ancient warriors with a forgotten past. Now-a-days, it seems we aren’t so ancient anymore.

We aren’t feared by our enemies: they never run and hide when we appear; our powers aren’t beyond comprehension, which seems to have been a big idea in Warframe’s earlier days: Vor seems to have a grasp on Void energy; and the only “way of old” we still use is the blade, which some the current factions are now taking advantage of.

There’s almost nothing which makes us “ancient” anymore – we are now simply another faction no different from the Grineer, Corpus, or Infested. So, where did our Tenno culture go? Our new(er) dojo tileset even looks more Corpus than Tenno.

So, for the Developers: as Warframe grows in the future, may I ask that this is considered? I think (and correct me if I’m wrong, forum members) there’s a large amount of the community who prefers the “ancient” feel over the feeling we are simply just another faction.

For the forum community: What do you think? Have we changed too drastically? Do you prefer the new Tenno, or the old? Bonus: See here (

) for a look at the old style.

Question: Since I see this popping up ever so often, how would you go about restoring this "ancient" feel to gameplay?

Add more from our "old ways" - ancient weapons, a unique Warframe style (the current one, as mentioned, looks very similar to the Corpus), and have the enemy fear us: I don't expect enemies to run away, but it'd be nice to hear an NPC (besides the capture target) shout "Oh no! Not the Void-demons!", and other things to serve as a testimony to our ancient power.

Specifically though. Adding things is all well and good, but how would you go about making things feel different? I don't speak for everyone, but I feel the current Tenno style is very much where it should be, especially within the lore. You know, with the Corpus being more imitative than innovative. As for enemies shouting about their fear, it would add a bit don't get me wrong, but I feel there would not be much of a change. Players will likely kill them either way, in the same way, feeling the same way.

The only lore that should be considered cannon is that which is currently in the game, everything else is either outdated or speculation.

As for the loss of the ancient feel, I'd say it is more to do with the games progression. Not as in one players path through the game, more so I am referring to the overall story, told through the updates.

We were the sole bearers of ancient technology in the beginning, but since then our enemies have come to realise the power that it gives us and thus they want to make it their own.

We are coming up on the 2nd anniversary of the games initial release, and plenty has happened since then.

Looking back it is hard to peer through without nostalgia clouding your vision

To be completely honest this is merely a complex, and rather polite, nostalgia post.

In the 'times of old' the thing that kept warframe so 'mysterious' was that we had almost no lore, no universe development. It was simply "You're these guys, these are your enemies, kill enemies because they bad".

Don't get me wrong, the lore still needs development, but I believe this feeling of change is connected to the fact that we are getting a universe now, we are finally being described the setting of this universe, it's inhabitants and all. We are not so ominous now, and ot be fair it makes sense to me and I personally like that our Tenno feel more like a part of the setting besides just 'kill gods'.

... I believe this feeling of change is connected to the fact that we are getting a universe now, ...

This clicked with me. I guess it is just nostalgia!

It often feels like there's too much going on in the Warframe universe; Warframe used to have a quieter tone (I guess because it was new, unexplored, etc.). I just wish there was a way to emulate that feeling of mystery again sometimes xD

This guy summed up what I feel pretty well.

The reason things feel different is because both the game and its universe/lore are evolving. The Tenno are amnesiacs, and in many ways are similar to children. They're learning more about the world around them, and as time goes on things get less mysterious and scary because they are beginning to understand what things are and why things work. I know it's a bit more complex than simply "nostalgia," but overall that is the best that it can be described.

I understand where you are coming from. Few things can beat the feeling of doing something for the first time.

Which is why I hold out hope for things such as quests and factions and enemies we've never seen before. New areas and locations and the lore on them. They're new and mysterious and yet another thing to think on.

This^ Can't wait for U15 on PS4. I've decided to leave the Warframe forums until it drops on PS4 simply so I can explore things w/o spoilers.

A primary example I can give would be the Ceres Tileset. Thus far it's own of my absolute favorite locations due to the atmosphere it gives off, and I'm still finding areas I've never seen before. Sometimes I like to just sit and watch things go about as if on a normal schedule. Just so I can learn and observe, like I did in the early game.

I think this might be the nostalgia talking.

This happens a lot with games, prime example being World of Warcraft.

People always talk about how the old days were "so much better", but if you really look at it, the gameplay was downright awful back then. Everything really has been for the best, even if you don't think so.

+1 OP

i watch some old closed beta footage and man, the memories

warframe has changed A LOT, but we have lost almost as much as we have gained =/

Like RahuStalker said, this feeling is due to the game and universe of the game evolving. There's nothing that can be done to reverse it, which I am very happy with. I'd rather the game grow and evolve naturally like it is now rather than stay in the same rut forever, which up until recently had been a problem.
