I believe the change addresses the ability to AFK due to spawning being predictable and points being so close together you didn't have to move. In our lab we have an antique machine running XP with a 256MB graphics card -- it runs some things (on min settings) but crashes on other things. We've been working on this for a while now and have more optimizations coming but it's hard work.
