Lotus In Bloom [Ooc]

Hello all, and welcome to my first-ever attempt at starting my own RP thread.  For those of you who've been around for a while, this thread can be considered a spin-off of Sumika1204's Faithful series, and was in fact originally conceived as a character piece for my OC.  Please read the follow documents carefully, as the Manifold is a rather small world, and I would hate to be sorting out logistical questions mid-thread.

Also, an important note:  for IC reasons, once your character has joined, they will not be able to leave until the mission, and hence the thread, is over.  I apologize for the inconvenience.

In this continuity, there is no such thing as a Revive, Tenno are people, Warframes are suits, and the Lotus is not evil.  Otherwise, please follow the rules in Silverbones' Guide to Forum RP.  For a more detailed list of continuity rules, see below.

That being said, happy RPing.

Abstract:

While the Balor Fomorians menace the Origin System from within, the Tenno cruiser Manifold departs the Orcus Relay for the darkness of Frontier Space beyond the Hieracon sector, seeking the source of a mysterious signal detected by Lotus operatives.  It's crew of volunteers is tasked with exploration, reconnaissance, and if necessary, search-and-destroy.  But there is no telling what one may encounter out in the untamed dark that was once the mighty Orokin Empire, and it seems that at least one of the crew has something to hide..

Opening Message

Spoiler

Message from the Lotus:

Tenno,

Once more, crisis looms before us.  The Balor Fomorians are only the spearhead for the Grineer’s renewed offensive; for the sake of the balance, our intervention is required more than ever.  But that is not the purpose to which I call you today.  Ever since we rediscovered the technology to construct our own Solar Rails, we have been sending exploratory teams into the long-abandoned Dark Sectors, recovering lost kin, unearthing Orokin secrets, and beating back the Infestation.  What many of you do not know – what I have kept from you – is that the Dark Sectors were not the end of Orokin.  The Solar Rail network once spanned the stars themselves, filling the lost regions known as Frontier Space.  It is from Frontier Space that our operatives have detected stirrings…echoes of the past that should not be.  We are assembling a team of volunteers to unmask this new threat, whatever its nature.  For those who wish to join, the rally point is the assault cruiser Manifold docked at the Orcus Relay on Pluto.  Corpus forces in the sector will be preoccupied with the Fomorian threat; you will have a wide window to slip through their defenses, but be aware that you will not be able to return until your task is complete.  This operation will be comm silent; one of our operatives will be placed in overall command.  Your mission is to explore Frontier Space beyond the Hieracon Dark Sector, recover any intelligence and Orokin technology that you can, find the source of our latest readings, and come back alive.

Good luck, Tenno.  We will pray for your safe return.

-Lotus

Manifold locations of importance

Spoiler

Hangar bay:

Wide and well lighted, with one side permanently open to space.  Noticeably distinct from the bays aboard other ships or bases; wider than the hangar on the Grineer asteroids, but shorter.  Aesthetic is similar to Dojo rooms like the Grandest Hall.

Gravitic polarization allows ships to land on both the floor and ceiling. Transit is facilitated by zero-g tubes near the walls or corners.

Corridors:

Basic Tenno aesthetic, similar to Dojo rooms. Consoles are integrated into the walls rather than free-standing pedestals, and include haptic interface tech.

C&C:

The heart of the Manifold.  C&C is nestled deep inside the Manifold's hull, as safe as it is possible to be from outside assault. The room is similar in design to the Orokin Lab in the Dojo, with one wall occupied by a lotus-styled view screen. Directly in front of this is the pilot's station, which relies on the primary viewscreen for most functions. Communications and sensors are located just to the sides of the primary screen, while command, tactical, and logistics stations are arrayed around the aft portion of the central holographic projector. Notably, this model is under glass rather than being railed off.  Key secondary accesses for equipment for the Lookout-class solar rail is located in the stairwell that provides the sole means of entry and exit.

Temperance's Room (Captain's Quarters):

Small and square, similar to a normal crew cell. Only notable difference from the outside is the square Orokin door rather than the circular Tenno portal. [REDACTED, pending advancement of the Secrets Overarc]

Reactor room/Engineering:

Dominated by an Orokin-style power core like those found in the Void, contained within a golden sphere that hovers, gently humming, above the center of the room. When the Solar Rail is in use, the orb splits into a lotus pattern and sinks to the floor, leaving the core free. Physical Tenno-style consoles are located around the perimeter of the room, with a large central station directly in front of the core. Also present on this level are foundry units designed to meet the ship’s mechanical needs subsidiary to the primary Foundry in the Armory.  To the rear of Engineering is the entrance to the drive coils.

Engine room/Drive coils:

The rear-most sector of the ship. A bare room with an access console leads into the engine units, which are laid out similarly to a Tower Sabotage mission. The drive trains are long, slightly asymmetrical rooms with the glowing blue engine shaft occupying one entire wall. Specialized consoles in each shaft allow direct access to the machines' workings.

Maintenance corridors (aka. Jefferies Tubes):

Accessible from almost anywhere, the Tubes are dedicated maintenance passages designed to allow access to the ship's inner workings.  They are generally red-lit to conserve power, and are built to a rather uncomfortable square configuration. Though not so low as to force crawling, most passages are only high enough to walk in bent over.  The only exception is the primary shaft that runs along the ship's ventral spine. It is high enough to stand upright and walk comfortably in, and provides rapid transit from one end of the vessel to the other.

Gardens:

Six garden rooms are located on the ship's spine, three to a side, each providing a different aesthetic for meditation, relaxation, or low-intensity combat training.  While almost exactly identical to the gardens in most dojos, the gardens on the Manifold do have one distinguishing feature: they lack skylights, instead using artificial solar lamps to mimic terrestrial light.

Observation room:

This is a tiny, bare, and essentially purposeless room located at the bow, directly beneath the main gun battery. Its rounded corners and vaguely elliptical shape may cause it to seem more like a pod than a normal room.  The window is actually a special hull plate, vaguely lotus-styled, polarized to allow one-way transparency to light while appearing totally opaque from the outside.  Originally, this was the only window on the entire ship.

Dining hall:

Even Tenno need to eat; the dining hall, conveniently located adjacent to the crew quarters, is where that happens.  It is a wide, open room with three entrances, filled with circular tables and ringed around the edges by slender supporting columns.  At the forward end of the hall is the serving counter, where meals can be picked up.  Unless the Manifold has a proper chef, however, meals will be of...interesting quality, due to the (possibly hair-brained) adaptation of Foundry technology to food preparation.  Although the tables are integrated into the floor, the chairs, perhaps unfortunately, are not.

Crew Quarters:

Large enough to house the Manifold’s entire crew complement (exact number TBD), the crew quarters occupy most of the forward mid-decks of the ship.  Rooms come in doubles and singles, but are designed modularly to allow up to four occupants.  Although large-scale personal hygiene facilities are communal for the sake of efficiency, each room does have a small refresher station (basically, a sink), and wall racks for warframe storage.  Each Tenno is also provided with a footlocker to store personal belongings.

Hydroponics:

One of the most vital sectors of the ship, including C&C and Engineering.  Hydroponics is not only responsible for fresh food production, but also handles large portions of oxygen renewal and waste recycling.  This is a large open area occupying two whole decks beneath the residential levels, and in places looks more like a park than part of a combat vessel.  This is due to the integration of Orokin tech found in a functioning Tower shortly after the Manifold jumped out of Hieracon; prior to this, Hydroponics was quite literally two huge empty bays filled with potted plants on steel shelves.

Cargo:

The deepest decks of the Manifold, accessible via lift or Tube from almost anywhere.  Cargo is literally vast empty spaces in the ship’s lowest forward portion, used to store supplies, raw materials, objects of interest, or anything else the ship might need or find.  The bays are almost always dark, lit only faintly to conserve power.  The curved surface of the hull is visible in the distance by the blue glow of power couplings on the inner surface.

Public areas:

A series of small, wide meeting halls at the entrances to the hangar bay, used to sort out traffic from the hangar to the rest of the ship.  These halls are also the first line of defense in case of a boarding action targeting the main hangar; all are equipped with deployable cover,  concealed Specter Transporters, and Jin-series turrets of the type normally found defending Clan Solar Rails.  Similar defenses abound throughout the Manifold proper, but the public halls are the first serious line of defense.

Armory:

One of the most-frequented areas on the ship, on the same level as C&C.  The armory includes multiple VR training rooms with near-flawless enemy and environmental simulations, as well as basic and advanced courses in firearms, melee weapons, unarmed combat, parkour and mobility, and tactical scenarios.  The center of the Armory is the ship’s Foundry, which can produce almost any item on-request, given a blueprint, raw materials, and the permission of the Manifold’s Foundry Master or CO.  Its most common use is producing specialty weapons for those Tenno without them.

Weapons Lockers:

Located throughout the ship in case of emergency, all lockers are pre-stocked with Manifold-issue armaments.  One locker supplies a full kit for three Tenno, including primary weapon, melee weapon, and dual secondaries.  Lockers are arrayed in series of three, varying  by primary type.  The first in a series will have three Manifold Bratons, akimbo sets of the Manifold Lato, Furis, and Lex, two Manifold Skana, and a Manifold Bo.  The second in the series will have three Manifold Latrons, the third three Manifold Struns.  The door of each locker holds four pieces of gear: a health restore, a shield recharge unit, a universal ammo pack, and an energy cell, all rated for team use.

Labs:

Located on the same level as the gardens, the Labs are divided into Energy, Chemical, Biological, Astronomical, and Archaeological divisions.  The first three are self-explanatory; the fourth deals with astrometrics and some alien tech, and the fifth examines ancient relics, including all other tech.  Archaeology also studies Warframe technology.

Observation decks:

The outer areas of the crew deck are equipped with transparency-polarized plates identical to the one in the bow, providing a panoramic view of surrounding space.

Transmat hub:

A small room equipped with multiple teleporter pads, to facilitate quick travel to any location with an active beacon.  Teleporter functions are, for the moment, command-locked.

Important Crew Memo

Spoiler

Attention members of the Manifold mission:

Due to space limitations, you will be required to leave your personal ship behind.  Upon arrival, you will be furnished with quarters, an arming rack, and a 4x1.5x1.5 foot locker for storing personal possessions.  Additional gear may be requisitioned from the Head Armorer.  Ships docked in the bay and all Archwing units are to be used with approval from officers only.  You will be expected to perform regular duty shifts in at least one of the ship's departments, including but not limited to: Engineering, Medical, Research, or Security.  Your off-duty hours are yours to do with as you please, barring orders to the contrary.

Please bear in mind that violence or abuse of any kind outside the sparring chambers will not be tolerated.  Crew members are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a manner befitting Tenno.  You will also be required to carry your CPID at all times (see attached).

Safe journey, Tenno.  We thank you for your aid.

CPID

Spoiler

The Command Privilege Identification Device (CPID) is your badge of rank and access pass to the Manifold.  Through it, you can access ship comms for voice and text messaging, contact the Tricephalon, order a meal, and generally perform any remote function appropriate to your role aboard the ship.  Your CPID is coded to both your Warframe and your biometrics, to make it as secure as possible against hacking.  If your CPID is lost or stolen, please report the incident immediately.  Without it, you will still be able to access ship systems with your biometric key, but your remote functionality will be disabled until you are issued a new CPID.

Continuity Rules (aka: weird stuff to expect when dealing with Temperance000).

Please note that these rules are general for all threads I create, and are not tailored specifically for Lotus in Bloom.

Spoiler

Continuity Rules:

1)      There is no such thing as a Revive

a.       To prevent any possible abuse of gameplay mechanics in an RP setting, characters that are killed through normally irreversible means will remain dead.  Space magic does not protect you from a bullet through the medulla oblongata.

b.      Except in cases of Oro abuse (see below).

2)      Tenno are people

a.       In the sense that outside of the Warframes, they appear as Technocyte-touched men and women infused with the power of the Void.

b.      Corollary:  Non-Tenno characters.  For the sake of general sanity, it is preferred that player characters be Tenno.  However, you may petition the GM for permission to use Syndicate or other non-Tenno characters.  Non-Tenno characters will be expected to behave in a manner befitting their background and/or factional allegiances.  Writers are heavily discouraged from using Grineer, Corpus, or heavens-forbid, Infested.  Also note: unless specifically permitted by the GM (e.g. for plot reasons) non-Tenno characters will be expected to be significantly less powerful than any Tenno present.

3)      Warframes are suits

a.       The natural corollary of “Tenno are people”; warframes are techno-organic battle suits, not remote-controlled platforms or bio-robotic golems animated by Oro.

4)      The Lotus is not evil

a.       She may have been born from a Sentient, but Space Mom is still Space Mom.  Your characters are free to hold whatever beliefs they like; just know that in this setting, the Lotus’ intentions are truly in the Tenno’s best interests.

5)      Oro

a.       In this setting, it is a combination of the Tenno’s consciousness and Void energy reserves, essentially equivalent to a soul.

b.      GM’S DISCRETION ONLY:  The ONLY way this may save your character from death is if the Oro is given sanctuary by a willing host IMMEDIATELY after the character’s “death.”  The host character will have to deal with two personalities living in their head, and will only be allowed to host the Oro with the GM’s express approval.  Other restrictions may apply.  This DOES NOT grant the host character access to the passenger’s skills, powers, or Void energy reserves.  Passengers cannot “take over” in the event that their host is knocked out, killed, or otherwise incapacitated; the only arena in which they have any agency is on the mental plane, where they may speak to their host or anyone in telepathic contact.

6)      Cephalons

a.       Cephalons are fully-realized AI constructs that require massive computing power to run.  Therefore, Tenno cannot carry a Cephalon or fork of a Cephalon into the field.  The smallest mobile platform that can house a Cephalon is a Liset-class dropship or Orbiter.

b.      Exception:  Unless the Cephalon is “frozen” on a stable storage medium.  Cephalons in this state are “dead” until “revived” on a system with sufficient energy and processing power to house them.

7)      Homebrew frames

a.       Don’t do it.  Just don’t.

b.      Exception: genderbent frames.  These are allowed, with the GM’s approval, as long as they aren’t fetishized.  HOWEVER, it is assumed that things like female Rhinos and male Novas are EXTREMELY rare, and will thus be greeted with a mixture of surprise and confusion by other characters.

c.       Corollary:  Unreleased content.  Warframes that have not yet been released in the North American build may not be used.

8)      Homebrew weapons

a.       No.  No you may not have a railgun tonfa, a rapier sheathed under the barrel of your sniper rifle, or any other clever not-in-game weapon or weapon modification you can think of.

b.      Corollary:  Unconventional Loadouts.  It is preferred that you limit yourself to the standard in-game Primary/Secondary/Melee setup or some variation thereof.  However, you may petition the GM for permission to use other weapon combinations, as long as you do not exceed the hard limit of three “weapon sets.”  You may not take more than two sets worth of any one weapon class, with the exception of Primaries (see below).

                                                              i.      1 Primary – 1 set, 1.5 sets if taken with another Primary

                                                            ii.      1 Secondary – 1 set

iii.      Dual Secondaries – 1 set, cannot be taken with another Dual Secondaries.

iv.      Thrown Secondaries – as Dual Secondaries

                                                            v.      1 Two-handed Melee – 1 set, cannot be taken with another Two-handed or Long Melee

                                                          vi.      1 Long Melee – 1 set

vii.       Dual Melee – 1 set, cannot be taken with another Dual Melee

viii.      1 Short Melee – 1 set, counts as a Dual Melee if taken with an identical Short Melee

ix.      Thrown Melee – as Short Melee

c.       Corollary:  Unreleased content.  Weapons and equipment that have not yet been released in the North American build may not be used.

9)      Homebrew equipment

a.       GM’S DISCRETION ONLY:  The technology of Warframe is poorly defined and even more poorly understood.  To reflect this, characters are allowed to innovate new equipment.  However, all equipment will be subject to approval by the GM and other thread members before introduction.

10)  Power Use

a.       Power use outside the warframes is naturally limited and very difficult.  Attempts to do so carry an inherent risk of critical existence failure for you and anything around you.

b.      Power use inside the warframes generally follows gameplay mechanics.

c.       “Power tricks”: These are ONLY allowed with the GM’s express approval.  While inside their warframe, characters may attempt to use their powers in new and inventive ways, such as charging a battery with Volt’s Shock or using Ash’s Shuriken as a makeshift scalpel.  All such attempts will carry inherent risk of arbitrary failure.

d.      Focus

Spoiler

a.       As noted above, in this continuity, Tenno are people and Warframes are suits.  Therefore, Operators, such as they are, exist within their Warframes.

b.      The Focus Lens is treated as a way in which a Tenno can stably manifest their Oro outside their body for a limited time. This is NOT the same as being an out-of-frame Tenno.

c.       The body MAY still be damaged while Focus is active.  Damage sustained to the physical body while Focus is active is automatically reduced, and a set amount will be automatically regenerated when the Oro returns to the body.  However, damage to the body may, at the GM’s discretion, affect the duration and power of your Focus, or in extreme cases, lead to character death.

d.      Passive Focus buffs may be activated without entering full Focus, but will always wear off over time, and cannot be maintained indefinitely.  Sorry Naramon folks, no eternal invisibility for you.

11)  Gear and Gear Storage

a.       Generally referred to as “digital storage,” the Gear storage functions almost exactly as it does in-game.

b.      Weapons and other large items cannot be stored.  If there is uncertainty about whether or not an item can be stored, the GM will decide.

c.       Be reasonable about what you keep in your Gear storage.  There may be repercussions for Tenno who are miraculously always prepared.

d.      Capture targets are held in a separate “secondary buffer.”  Only one capture target may be held at a time.

12)  Cosmetics and Armor

a.       Syandanas, Sigils, Armor, and Emblems follow the same basic rules as Warframes and Weapons:  content that has not been released in the North American build at the time in which the thread is set may not be used.

b.      This is more for general sanity and the closing of loopholes for other types of gear; apologies if you can’t wear your pretty cape.

13)  Timeline/Lore

a.       The Orokin Empire was a bit bigger than just Origin and Tau.

b.      ALL warframes existed in some form or other during the Orokin era.  “New” warframes like Zephyr and Nova were rebuilt using rediscovered technology, or refined from prototypes.

c.        No Tenno knows exactly how long the Long Sleep from the Collapse to the present spanned.  It is assumed to be centuries at best, millennia at worst.  Anyone else who does know, isn’t telling.

                                                              i.

The Long Sleep in this setting was proper cryosleep, not the Transference-induced in medias res of the Second Dream

d.      All in-game event represent actual points on the Warframe timeline, and will be tracked according to the progress of the RP.

e.       At the GM’s discretion, certain changes appropriate to the setting and RP-specific lore may be made to established factions or events.

14)  Gameplay vs. Roleplay

a.       Certain elements of gameplay simply don’t make sense in a roleplaying context.  These include but are not limited to:

                                                              i.      Visible When Holstered on/off:  All weapons are always visible when carried or holstered.  No additional weapons may be held in Gear storage.

ii.      Over-the-shoulder PoV:  I’m fairly certain no one does this, but just in case it occurs to you: no, you cannot angle your vision around corners without a mirror or Remote Observer.  Tenno still see with their eyes (see 2 and 3).

iii.      Remote Observers: having a camera that focuses only on you is just silly.  Remote Observers may be used to scout areas a reasonable distance from the character.

iv.      Focus Invulnerability:  It’s really no fun for the enemy when you leave your body on the ground and start laying into them with an invulnerable energy form.  Your body can still take damage while in Focus (see above).

                                                            v.

Operators.  Second Dream was amazing, but it left us RPers with a bit of a dilemma.  To preserve the essence of personal interaction in RP, Operators exist within their Warframes (see above)

b.      Certain elements of roleplaying simply don’t make sense in a gameplay context.  These include but are not limited to:

                                                              i.      A Trinity storing small medical tools in her over-sized fauld.  Not far-fetched for a medic-frame, but not practical in-game.

ii.      Codex/Sythesis scanners acting as more than one-off cameras.  They may be treated as phase-imaging binoculars, or in certain cases, video recorders.

iii.      Warframe blackboxes.  Not much use for them ingame, but all Warframes are assumed to keep an audio/video/sensory backup that can be physically retrieved in the event of a Tenno’s death.

c.       Questions of Gameplay vs. Roleplay may be debated by all thread members, but will be finalized by the GM.

Thread Procedures

1)      Petitioning the GM

a.       You may petition via the OoC thread on the forums, the GM’s Private Message box, or the chatango page.

b.      Be prepared to explain why you and/or your character should be allowed the exception for which you are applying.  Consider how this deviation from the norm has affected the character, especially as an element of their backstory, their fighting style, and/or their interactions with others.

c.       The GM reserves the right to make all petitions public for discussion among thread members.

d.      The GM’s decision is final.  Repeated and egregious acts of defiance, incivility, and/or disruption in both OoC and IC contexts may result in arbitrary character death.

2)      Interacting with fellow RPers

a.       An RP is a collaborative effort.  Treat your fellow writers with the respect and civility they are due.

b.      Have fun.  It’s why we’re all here, crafting an online story when we could be out interacting with other human beings.

c.       Always strive to improve.  Thread members are encouraged to read and offer constructive critiques on other writers’ posts.  It is the job of the writer to be open to such critiques, and the job of the critics to ensure that they are delivered in a tactful and appropriate manner.

Finally, because I somehow didn't think of this before, a picture of roughly what the Manifold looks like.  Same basic design, just slightly larger, with more stuff inside.

IMPORTANT:

If you are joining after December 21st, for the sake of ease-of-RPing and general sanity, I would prefer that you limit yourself to a single character.  A few people have exceptions to this, either from being well-known to me as competent, thoughtful RP-ers, or simply slipping in under the deadline.  If you would like to bring more than one character to this thread, please apply for an exception here in the OoC.  Credit and blame for this goes to SnaleKing.  Thank you.

FOR ALL THOSE THINKING OF PARTICIPATING:

This thread has gotten much larger than I predicted, much faster than I could have dreamed.  I am touched by the attention, but as I have said, the Manifold is a small world, and I don't want it to get too overcrowded.

With this in mind:  enrollment for "Lotus in Bloom" will OFFICIALLY CLOSE at MIDNIGHT, PACIFIC STANDARD TIME on DECEMBER THE 24th, CHRISTMAS EVE.  If you wish to join, please notify me and put up a character post in the OoC before that time.

AS OF JULY 7TH, 2015

Due to the large number of drop-outs and general consensus among thread members, Lotus in Bloom has been opened to enrollment again.  If you still wish to join us, please post a request and character profile here in the OoC for approval before joining the IC.

...Temp, the black text makes it really hard to read about the Manifold's location. Would you mind changing it to normal?

Umm....normal?  I thought black was normal.  Unless you're using the old theme?

Edit:  Switching over, I see your point.  How do I change text colors, again?  I've never had to do it before.

I am using the old theme (the new one hurts my eyes) But the part with the ship's locations is the only part with dark text while the other parts are in white, why is that?

That particular part was copied from a Google Doc.  All the rest was copied from Word or filled in manually.

How do I change text colors, again?  I've never had to do that before.

Edit: Fixed!  Just had to copy from Word.

Well, they were instrumental to the church's takedown. They're mostly trusted by the Lotus, though the ghosts of Dreyrisal likely don't reciprocate the sentiment. As for why they'd join, whatever this mysterious, ambiguous threat is, the Ghosts probably want to know about it as soon as possible, and have a hand in the first contact.

*cough*Mortos*cough*....I'll read the IC and see what I can come up with. It also seems like most people are bringin in two of their characters. In my case unless I create a new one, Jinx and Arthur actually makes a bit sence given their history with Temperance...Though I have to admit, only having one char to focus on does sound lovely.

*a liset landed inside the hangar, two figures walked through the door. both were mags but one was white on black and the other black on white, both had grams on their backs and seemed to be the only weapon they carried*

Black: why do we have to wear these stupid badge things... *she fiddled with ehrs a bit*

White: c-cause there are c-cpid things....they're supposed to help! besides father sent us here to make sure nothing bad happens....o-or he didnt want us in the way...

Black: im sure him and mother are fighting again, she probably is going to blow something up to get to him to . . .

White:  . . .  yea

*they walked on down the halls, looking for something to do*

Reedfish. Could I ask what on earth is going on here? What are they talking about?
