Lecta (Likely All Whips) Unaffected By Reach Or Prime Reach.

I think the problem with the whip weapons is that they only use the head of the whip when factoring in what you hit, which makes hitting anything, regardless of range mods, a bloody nuisance.

Also IIRC the whips are fairly short-range anyway, so an extra, what, 150% of 'short' is still short.

1 - Have you tried it?

2 - Beta game, bugs everywhere.

Yes I've tried it. Either I equip the mod or not, the effect range is around 5m.

I know, but it seems that some people treat it like "normal", making me feel like it is intended, which I hope not.

Not really, actually whips are naturally long range.

I can't find any official word on whether this is intended or not or even if DE is aware of this. I have only done testing with the Lecta personally but I have heard accounts of other whips also being unaffected by range mods.

Below is my testing process.

Lecta without any mods:

Can hit from 4m away.

Lecta with reach:

can hit from 4m

but not from 5m

Lecta with primed reach:

hit from 4m

no hit from 5m

Someone in a post about this offered the explanation that the head of the whip is what needs to hit to cause damage. Range mods would made the head reach to far so you wouldn't be able to hit anything near you if you added range. Thus range doesn't work on whips.

This is not the reason, as seen in this screen shot,

http://i.imgur.com/dP0z125.jpg

the head of the whip is past the pillar and the pillar is still hit, as indicated by the hit-sparks.

I made this post to bring this to DE's attention with some evidence of the behavior. I would like to hear back on whether or not this is intended behavior. If it isn't, hopefully DE can get this fixed in a timely manor. (I mostly bought primed reach so I could whip entire rooms at once)

I've done some testing of this myself. I use the scanner to check the distance from a surface, which gives you precision to tenths of meters.

Scoliac and Atterax are similarly affected by this bug. I also found it to apply to Kestrel, which may mean Reach has no effect on Glaive-type melee weapons. The similarity I see between whips and thrown melee is that their animations transform them; whips extend when attacking, thrown weapons are shrunk when not in use. The only other melee weapon I could think of with a similar property was Silva & Aegis, but I'm glad to report Reach seems to effect it properly.

Oh, and Reach does in fact work on Galatine.

EDIT: I should note that all of my testing has been in Solo mode. Could this be another client/host issue?

I can verify Reach does nothing on m Atterax. Will post Screenshots (LOTS) with Scanner Data to show 10ths of meter increments (thanks secret_character for the info!).

Even if the issue is that it's the "head" of the whip that is being extended, not the whip's entire length (to which, I totally agree with dotexey, it shouldn't as it hits closer enemies with the rest of the whip.), the head of the whip +%60 should be at least a tenth of a meter. I mean, just one section of the end of my whip is at least a foot across from blade to blade. %60 of that, in centimeters would be a tenth of a meter.

Wish me luck!

The whip are less powerful than Heavy blade or sword, so I think it's a good deal to let the entire whips let deal damage.

Maybe it's better to get an extra damage on the head of the whip, but allow only the head to shot will just let the whip more useless than he actually is.

Not understanding why Tipedo is not affected, unless it's a bug.

It's the perfect candidate .. long stick with a blade on the end (?!)

Atterax does not seem to be affected by primed reach, but I thought that previously Reach did affect it (?)

This was back when it was released anyway as it's been a while since I've dug it out of the cupboard ..
