Sci_Ant's Comprehensive Chroma Armor Build Guide [In-Depth With Calculations And Results]

Hello Tenno ! Chroma is such an amazing and complex beast and I've spent many hours wondering how to mod him, as I'm sure many of you have.

 

Since his best powers (Elemental Ward and Vex Armor) have such complex interactions with each other and with defensive mods (Vitality, Redirection, Steel Fiber etc.), I decided to do an in-depth numerical analysis of a large number of permutations using different mods and elemental combos.

 

First off a little overview :

 

1. This guide assumes that you know the basics of how Chroma's abilities work. If not then please read the following page >  http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Chroma/Abilities

2. There are several cases that have been studied, taking into consideration effects only from Elemental Ward and Vex Armor.

3. Each case takes into consideration only elements that affect armor and effective health (Electric, Cold, Heat) Yep, no Toxin.

4. Each case involves the activation of both Vex Armor and Elemental Ward (best way to do this is press 3 then press 2 and the animations will flow seamlessly and you can start shooting immediately).

5. All effective health values are considered only for the period that these 2 powers are active.

6. All related values have been color coded as follows : Shield/Electric, Armor/Cold, Health/Heat/Damage, Effective Health/Results. (Cold is actually obtained by using black, white or grey in the game, but is orange here to connect it to Armor.)

7. Formulae for all the calculations have been taken from the following pages :

8. Acronyms :

TF = Transient Fortitude
BR = Blind Rage
FE = Fleeting Expertise
NM = Narrow Minded
PC = Primed Continuity
Const. = Constitution
r = rank
Dmg = Damage
HP = Hit Points

 

9. Cases 1, 2, 3 and 4 are based on this basic framework, the empty slots being where the mods in question are placed :

IMPORTANT FACTS TO KNOW:

> Damage reduction on Chroma does not affect Shields.

> Armor only affects Health directly.

> Even with max Scorn value on Vex Armor your shields will still take the same amount of damage they were taking earlier.

> Thus rendering a Maxed Redirection or Vigor only a utility to reach the maximum value of Scorn (Armor Increase) directly without having to regen shields after 300 loss.

> It takes a loss of 400 Shields to reach the max Scorn value or max Fury value.

> Overshields losses DO NOT contribute to Vex Armor Scorn increase.

 

> Elemental Ward's buff's for Chroma and allies are % increases and not fixed number increases. > Vex Armor is a direct increase to TOTAL ARMOR and STACKS MULTIPLICATIVELY with Steel Fiber and Cold Elemental Ward (as stated on wiki, and tested from different sources)

> Quick Thinking efficiency is affected by the total Armor on Chroma and adds very large amounts of effective health to him if used along with a maxed Primed Flow. > Total Armor on Chroma is the same regardless of which ability is activated first between Elemental Ward and Vex Armor. It is actually better to activate Vex Armor first then activate Elemental Ward since the animation plays out more smoothly and both can be activated fast.

 

> The damage reduction from Chroma's powers stacks multiplicatively with Trinity's damage reduction from Blessing and the final damage reduction can be calculated by the following formula >

 

Final Damage Reduction = 1 - [(1 - DRchroma/100) * (1 - DRtrin/100)]

For example if Damage Reduction from Chroma's powers and armor is 95 % and Damage Reduction from Trinity's Blessing is 80 % then the Final Damage Reduction =1 - [(1 - 95/100) * (1 - 80/100)] = 1 - (0.05 * 0.2) = 1 - 0.01 = .99 or 99 %

ALL FORMULAE USED :

1. Damage Received = Attack Damage ÷ (1 + Net Armor/300)

2. Damage Received % = Dmg Rec/Attack Dmg x 100 = 100 / (1 + Net Armor/300)

3. Damage Reduction % = 100 - Dmg Rec %

 

4. The 3 above combined can be simply stated as > 

Damage Reduction % = 100 − (100 / (1 + Armor / 300))

 

5. Effective Health = Shields + (Health * (1 + Net Armor/300)) 

 

6. Fury % = 100% + (1.75 x Power strength %)

 

7. Effective health for Quick Thinking = Damage Reduction factor * Quick Thinking Efficiency * Energy Pool

 

8. Elemental Ward buffs for CHROMA and ALLIES are according to the following formula:

 

Added Attribute = Base Value of Attribute * Elemental Ward Buff % * Power Strength %

 

Therefore, for CHROMA ONLY (Base HP and Shields = 100, Base armor = 350) the buffs are calculated as follows:

 

For Electric/Shields = 100 * (100% /100) * (power strength% /100) = Power Strength % 

For Heat/Health = 100 * (200% /100) * (power strength% /100) = 2 * Power Strength %

For Cold/Armor = 350 * (150% /100) * (power strength% / 100) = 5.25 * Power Strength %

 

9. Total Armor on Chroma = Vex Armor increase * (Base Armor + Armor Increase from Steel Fiber + Armor Increase from COLD Elemental Ward) 

                                          = (Vex Armor multiplier * Power Strength) * [base Armor + (Base Armor * Steel fiber %) + (Base Armor * 150 % * Power Strength %)]

                                          = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 + (350 * Steel fiber%) + (350 * 1.5 * Power Strength%)]

                                          = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF% + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

where % implies that the value is what you see in the game UI divided by 100.

 

Therefore, when 400 shields are instantly lost > 

 

Simplest formula for Chroma Armor (when both COLD Elemental Ward and Vex Armor are active) = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF% + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

Simplest formula for Chroma Armor (when NON COLD i.e., HEAT, ELECTRIC or TOXIN Elemental Ward and Vex Armor are active) = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF%)]

 

And therefore, when 300 shields are instantly lost (due to no shield increase from Mods or NON ELECTRIC Elemental Ward) > 

 

Simplest formula for Chroma Armor (when both COLD Elemental Ward and Vex Armor are active) = 75% of (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF% + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

= (2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF% + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

Simplest formula for Chroma Armor (when NON COLD or ELECTRIC i.e., HEAT or TOXIN Elemental Ward and Vex Armor are active) = 75 % of (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF%)]

(2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + SF%)]

 

NOTE : 2.625 is 75 % of 3.5, since in some cases only 300 and not 400 shields can be lost giving only 75 % Scorn from Vex Armor, while requiring a recharge and loss of shields to a minimum of 100 only then giving 100 % Scorn from Vex Armor.

ARMOR for COLD @ 400 shields loss (100% Scorn) = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 + (350 * Steel fiber%) + (350 * 1.5 * Power Strength%)]

= (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + Steel Fiber % + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

 

ARMOR for ELECTRIC, HEAT, TOXIN @ 400 shields loss (100% Scorn) = (3.5 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + Steel Fiber %)]

 

ARMOR for COLD @ 300 shields loss (75% Scorn) = (2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 + (350 * Steel fiber%) + (350 * 1.5 * Power Strength%)]

= (2.625 * Pwr Str %) * [350 (1 + Steel Fiber % + (1.5* Pwr Str %))]

Dmg Reduction % =>100 - 100 / (1 + (1225/300)) =>100 - (100 / 5.0833) => 100 - 19.672 % = 80.328 %

 

Effective Health = Shields + (Health * (1 + Net Armor/300))  = 0 + (300 x 5.0833) = 1524.99 HP (HIT POINTS)

Effective Health = Shields + (Health * (1 + Net Armor/300))  = 0 + (300 x 8.65625) = 2596.875 HP

Effective Health = Shields + (Health * (1 + Net Armor/300)) = 200 + (300 x 11.2083) = 3562.5 HP

FINAL RESULTS -

 

Order of importance for elements for tanking builds :

COLD > HEAT > ELECTRIC

 

Order of importance for mods :

Steel Fiber / Vitality > Vigor > Redirection

 

IMPORTANT NOTES:

 

1. When using COLD adding Vitality and Vigor gives slightly less Effective Health (around 2000 EHP less) than using Vitality and Steel Fiber, but gives 420 shields that can be lost to give instant max Scorn buff without having to worry about using a Sentinel with Guardian Mod to regenerate 300 shields instantly on loss. The difference is marginal, so you can choose to go for slightly more EHP with Steel Fiber or more independence from companion/reliability regarding Scorn buff with Vigor.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: The catch is that when Vex Armor is off you will have 71 % dmg reduction with Steel Fiber on and 53.8% dmg reduction without it. 

 

2. When using HEAT, ELECTRIC or TOXIN use Steel Fiber for DOUBLE the Effective Health than without.

 

3. Power Strength is a direct boost to any of these Elements and COLD Ward scales off it the best due to stacking armor multipliers.

 

4. When using COLD adding Vitality gives more Effective Health than when using HEAT, ELECTRIC or TOXIN. Meaning that Vitality scales better with COLD.

 

5. Chroma with COLD is good against ranged enemies, with HEAT being better against Infested. ELECTRIC has the lowest Effective Health in any Case, but is good for CC and damage. TOXIN will have similar Effective Health as ELECTRIC, with the disadvantage of not having instant Scorn buff but is useful for blocking builds and against Corpus.

 

6. Using Rage with any of these builds gives back energy from the loss of health, which can be continuously regenerated using a Winds of Purity Furis, channeling melee with Life Strike or via a Rejuvenation Aura. Rage works best with large health pools so it will work best with HEAT and Vitality together.

 

7. With regard to Quick Thinking and Primed Flow:

 

a. When using Quick Thinking and Primed Flow the EHP is effectively DOUBLED while using COLD, increases by a small amount when using ELECTRIC and decreases by a small amount while using HEAT, when compared to a build with the same POWER STRENGTH but using Vitality and Steel Fiber instead of QT and Primed Flow.

 

b. When using COLD it is more effective to use more Power Strength to get more EHP from Quick Thinking and Primed Flow than to use Steel Fiber.

 

c. When using ELECTRIC or HEAT it is more effective to use Steel Fiber to get more EHP from Quick Thinking and Primed Flow.

 

d. Arcane Guardian does not increase the EHP by a considerable amount.

 

Personally I'm going to use the build in Bonus Case 1 while using Cold and Bonus Case 1 - Alternate Version while using Electric and Heat that can be seen as follows:

looking over at the calculations on the first page, wouldn't the calculations be 3.5 * [210 + (3.5 * power str)] or 3.5 * [210 + (1.5 * power str) + (3.5 * power str)] since chroma's armor is 735 with max steel fiber w/o buffs?

The way it works is that Ice Armor adds 150% of base armor, times power strength, in a manner that stacks with Steel Fiber. So, you have 350 armor + (350*1.5*power str) + (350*SF%) and then all of that is times the Vex Armor buff... (350*(1.5*pwr str + SF%))*3.5*pwr str

Question, I notice in your summary and in your breakdown you mention the self healing provided by heat as one of the things that really puts it over the top above cold, is that factored into your EH numbers and graph or is that simply additional information?  I ask because I'm approaching it from the perspective of using melee only-lifestrike, in which case the self healing would be slightly redundant.   Just trying to figure out the "if in case of perpetual self healing from life strike" does cold out-weight heat or does heat still come out on top?

First parts right, with Cold ward up... couple of % changes... Second part missed the base armor, so +350.

350+(350*1.5*1.85))+(350*1.10) OR 350+(350*150%*185%))+(350*110%) etc.

 

350[Base Armor] + (971.25)[From Cold Ward] + (385)[From Steel Fiber] = 1706.25 armor = 85% Damage Reduction

 

with VA, becomes;

(350+350*(150%*185%+110%)*3.5*185% = (350+1356.25)*647.5% = 1706.25[PreVAArmor]*647.5% = 11048 armor = 97.35% Damage Reduction

 

Of course, you won't actually get that much of a VA buff unless you're using a Raksa or some other shield restore... even Guardian would only give you 600%. With just the base 300 shields you'd only see 300%, so 5118.75 armor = 94.46% DR.

From the chart you will notice that in all the cases Heat gives you more effective health even without counting the heal factor. I haven't counted the heal factor in my calculations, it's just additional bonus on activation of Heat Ward since any HP healed up to your max HP value will remain after Heat Ward ends.

 

My calculations take into consideration only the direct HP increase from Heat Ward added to Chroma's base or modded health value (300 or 740 with max Vitality), thereby giving you more effective health, even with lower armor values than Cold Ward.

So I went back to the wiki, our only source of info as of now, and read that Vex Armor only applies to base armor and not any other modifier, not even Cold Elemental Ward.

 

Take my calculations as a baseline of what it could be at the LEAST, then add whatever armor values you think are more accurate.

Well, I would trust the numbers and formulae posted in this thread by people's actual WF accounts much more than info posted anonymously on a wiki without corroborative testing.

 

So, after extensive testing, formulas deducing, and numbers juggling, my final formulas are these (corresponding values for Cold Ward and Vex Armor affected by power strength):

Armor with Steel Fiber = BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber = BaseArmor*(1+1,1), i.e. Armor = 350*(1+1,1) = 735;

Armor under Cold Ward and Steel Fiber = (BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber) + BaseArmor*ColdWard = BaseArmor * (1+ColdWard + SteelFiber), i.e. Armor = 350*(1+1,5+1,1) = 1260;

Armor under Vex Armor and Steel Fiber = (BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber)*VexArmor, i.e. Armor = 350*(1+1,1)*3,5 = 2572,5;

And armor under Cold Ward, Vex Armor, and Steel Fiber = [(BaseArmor + BaseArmor*SteelFiber) + BaseArmor*ColdWard]*VexArmor = BaseArmor*(1 + SteelFiber + ColdWard)*VexArmor, i.e. Armor = 350*(1+1,1+1,5)*3.5 = 4410.

Which shows that Vex Armor clearly modifies the armor received from Cold Ward and SF as well.

 

The non-formulaic wording:

TLDR / RESULTS:

Scorn correctly increases the armor gain from SF; it does not ignore the mod. Scorn is a separate modifier and does not add to SF. Basically, any armor amount you have before the Scorn buff is multiplied by the Scorn buff.

Ice Ward acts like another Steel Fiber mod, with an increase from power strength. At base strength, it's like a +150% SF mod; at max strength it's like a +426% SF mod. The effects of Ice Ward stacks additively with the Steel Fiber mod; A max strength Ice Ward on a Chroma with a maxxed out SF would give the Chroma +536% armor for a total of 2226 armor.

 

Edit: And using those formulae, Cold ward adds a lot more effective health than Fire, assuming you can get the full Vex Armor Scorn buff (which would require the loss of more shields than he naturally has... works well with a Raksa Kubrow).

I've already seen your testing and results, credited you for your insights, and I've explicitly stated that my results are the baseline, they are not 100 % accurate but they are the minimum values to be expected. Everyone is entitled to finally accept whichever values are right, it's just that the ones I posted are the most conservative, least values to consider. As I've said before, it's safer to underestimate than overestimate, right ? :)

 

Thta is awesome OP, have you done similar tests and analysis on other frames?

 

Thanks for the appreciation! No Chroma was the first frame whose powers were so complex that I felt the need to do such an analysis on his powers. The rest of the frames are pretty straight forward imho. :)

First of all, great guide. Thanks for the info!

 

I had a few questions about some build specifics. I have not played my Chroma a ton, and I typically have run max duration builds. For those of you who run 34-40 second duration builds, do you find Scorn and Fury dropping off a lot? Do you have a hard time getting it to stack back to the max value? Having over a minute of Scorn and Fury at/near max value is nice for consistency so far, but if you guys have no problem stacking it with half the duration, I might want to drop some of my duration for more power strength.

 

Darkz made a post about Scorn boosting SF (I'm having a hard time quoting + adding my text right now), and if that's true, that would boost cold way higher than fire on the eHP chart, right?

 

I was also wondering if you guys use sentinels vs. kubrows. I've pretty much always used my Carrier, but I just got back to the game and have been thinking about crafting kubrows. I heard the Raksa one might be a good fit for Chroma, and I have been noticing that my Carrier dies sometimes in higher level missions. Are the kubrows more survivable and therefore a better choice to regen shields for non-Vigor/Redirection builds?

Kubrows have a bad trait of charging into the fray without regard for enemy levels, so on higher levels they die as often, as sentinels.

 

I feel pretty comfortable with 30 seconds max. strength Vex Armor (though I didn't use my Chroma much after all those tests, I got oversated with him). 30 seconds of robocop mode seem better than a minute of terminator.

Honestly I'd say it depends on your playstyle: if you like to beat faces in as long as possible before worrying about time, then use high duration, but if you're fine with keeping track of the timer i don't see any problems. Missionwise, If you're not doing survival and defense missions, you will probably have some trouble making the most of those 34-40 seconds, but if you're going into the later waves in late game survival and defense missions, i imagine it shouldn't be too bad as long as you keep track of your timer.

I got Chroma a day or two ago (he's in my foundry atm), so I've been thinking of ways to make him tough like you folks seem to have.

The general idea is to go the max effective health route (so probably fire element, maybe ice could work great too), put in Rage for energy on damage taken and Quick Thinking for extra effective health with energy, combine that with a Life Strike melee weapon to bring in health gained by Rage (I like Orthos Prime for it's speed and AoE), and a Raksa can help top off your Vex Armor effect.

 

How good might this idea be for tanking? Maybe I could use something other than Quick Thinking in the Chroma build, but maybe it's a good safety net to have when high on energy and getting caught off guard.

 

Also, does a Kubrow's Health/Armor change as Chroma's Health/Armor changes since they're supposed to be "linked"?

 

Edit: Looks like my Life Strike idea for healing is original on this thread. Maybe a few other combo builds will be mentioned on here.

Example: how deadly would a Soma Prime get from maxing out the offensive Vex Armor effect? But that's off topic for being DPS rather than tanking.

Looks ok, if Raksa can handle the shields issue. But fire won't give you max survivability. I consider his health buff rather useful as a support for caster frames, which have low armor. If you want durability, chose cold.

 

I don't think Life Strike is anything original. I personally use it in all and any of my melee builds, so it's rather granted that I always have it. Original idea is a Furis with Loka's mod for 20% vampiric and fully modded for damage (like using primed heated charge and Bore), it performs surprisingly well with x7.81 Fury.

Max Fury buff is 5.97x. But yeah, Furis is freaking overpowered as a healing option.

Since I really only use the Furis to heal, I generally don't bother with ammo mut; but Quickdraw is your friend as you can really only be killed by a knockdown or during a reload when the weapons out (on all frames using it). Seeker is pretty important; fire into a crowd and you get the health return for each enemy hit.

 

With the ~6x damage buff it's actually pretty powerful. I happened to have it out when the Stalker showed up, somewhere around level 30, and I killed him in a single clip O.o.

It will be even more powerful when I get around to adding the 90% elements instead pf 60%'s. Possibly swap PHC in somewhere, but I kinda like the occasional Viral proc, as low as the chance is.

I know what the OP said, but reading this thread, I've seen a couple of conclusions in contention: That Ice Ward's armor increase is percentage based, and that Vex Armor's armor increase applies to the total current armor, including Ice Ward and Steel Fiber (and maybe Arcane Guardian?). 

 

The former seems to be more of a conclusion based on testing, the latter simply an assumption. It's easy to believe one, but not the other. If both are true, with Steel Fiber, Ice Ward, full Scorn, and max power strength, we'd get an armor rating of 22,136 which with a max Vitality would give us an effective health of 56,090 (I think, I'm not the best at maths). Isn't that a little too insane?

 

Are we sure that either are true?
