Existing Chesa Issues:

- items retrieved per trip does not pickup all items in immediate area that should obviously be retrieved
- pathing
- prioritization of items to be retrieved
- delay in retrieved items being conveyed to owner
- items retrieved often dropped far from owner or during return to owner due to collision with objects or terrain
- some retrieved items never conveyed to owner due to Chesa's inability to physically keep up with owner, upon teleport to owner items has lost
- kubrow general issue, inability to restrict or prioritize kubrow to certain tasks via mod equipping to specific slots, that is to say the sentinels have attack precept mod, kubrows do not

"For clarity, the Retrieval mechanic does not have an item limit. It does however, depend on what is currently in the player's radius when the ability is active. If a player is constantly moving this may skew what Chesa will retrieve, making it look like it's not picking up items it should. Our team has the Retrieval function on the radar for review, and are looking at screenshots/videos of other lingering issues with Kubrow pathing as a whole."

This is not entirely true, regarding between the vacuum debate, and the pack tactics. The question was about how to make other pets more desirable, in which he mentioned about looking into this pack tactics thing. The two questions (via carrier's suction & making other pets more desirable), were what was the topic about, nothing specifically about the Chesa Kubrow, other then what [DE] Rebecca specifically stated on the "word" Chesa you are referring too:

The only time Chesa was even mentioned was, like I said, used as an example with the "two sentinels" to segway into the larger question at hand.

 

 

Just pointing this out, as how you took the time out of your day to put this all together nicely, I don't want you to confuse/misconstrue what was actually being talked about during that Devstream.

Thank you for your discussion. I believe both your statement and mine are correct. My summary never stated that the carrier vacuum portion of the discussion was specifically about the Chesa Kubrow. The point of my reference to that section of the DevStream was to illustrate that although DE had the opportunity to respond directly to the question I posted in the DevStream questions regarding the Chesa functionality and how it related to the Carrier vacuum that DE did not and instead only mentioned the word Chesa. Then a few minutes later when the discussion turned to kubrow Rebecca commented that many people do not use them because in comparison to Carrier they are viewed as not as useful. Again, this would have been an ideal time to specifically discuss and respond to my question to DE regarding the Chesa's functionality and how it was supposed to be a viable alternative to Carrier thereby giving players some variety. However, instead of addressing why Chesa isn't working well and isn't a carrier alternative the conversation went to Pack Tactics. I think my statement in the timeline is a reasonable summary of what transpired and does reflect the conversation and lack thereof. Everyone knew about the Chesa issue, it was even one of the Hot Topics, but instead of addressing it directly the issue was avoided. This seems to occur frequently with DE and I would prefer if DE simply acknowledged the issues and said they are not commenting on it, or it is being reviewed, or it is as intended, rather than side skirting the topics or directing the discussions away from them. DE Megan did reply here with a reasonably direct answer about a month after the DevStream and that was very much appreciated. I hope that with the time that has passed and the upcoming Catbrows that the Chesa retrieve and other Kubrow mechanics will finally get the attention they need to make them truly viable alternatives.

So maybe Kubrow will get some fixes next year? *sigh*

 

Just took my Chesa for a spin in T2 Survival and it picked up pretty much nothing. I was running around constantly and it didn't have the time to pick up anything. The disarm is nice and all and makes the Chesa quite aggressive, but it's just simply horrible for retrieving items.

 

Really DE, show some love for the Kubrows.

You Sure You had the Retrieve Mod on? Cuz I'm on ps4 & he was picking up items & bringing em to me..

make sure you had it on & that it's maxed out cuz if it's not maxed then he doesn't pick up much at all

Or if retrieve isn't equipped to him then he won't pick up anything no matter what.

Hopefully they can eventually make chesa's work like Carrier!!

Yes I did have it on and yes it was maxed. If you are an active player and you don't stop to fight pretty much ever then the Kubrow will pretty much never bring you any loot.

- prioritization of items to be retrieved
- delay in retrieved items being conveyed to owner
- items retrieved often dropped far from owner or during return to owner due to collision with objects or terrain
- some retrieved items never conveyed to owner due to Chesa's inability to physically keep up with owner, upon teleport to owner items has lost
- kubrow general issue, inability to restrict or prioritize kubrow to certain tasks via mod equipping to specific slots, that is to say the sentinels have attack precept mod, kubrows do not

If a player is constantly moving this may skew what Chesa will retrieve, making it look like it's not picking up items it should. Perhaps they could alter the Chesa so that instead of picking up items in his mouth to bring to you, he could have a little vacuum machine thingy on his back that acts like Carrier and he just sucks up loot as he runs around, and then brings it to you when he's done doing whatever he's doing, in effect turning him into a sort of higher-maintenance self-mobile carrier.  I think that would seriously improve his utility and take a lot of the strain away from players watching their Chesa run over to a rare mod and then ignore it to pick up credits or useless ammo.

(dunno if I have posted this already)

I currently run with a Chesa 24/7 and I like him alot, he is my first Bulky Kubrow, he brings me random crap to me and he works like a Loki's disarm 1 enemy at a time, moreover, he can be revived multiple times. Right now I rather use him rather than the Carrier which I don't have(lel) or the Wyrm P I have or any of the other breeds of Kubrow.

Hey Tenno!

 

With the Carrier and Carrier Prime Sentinel being the most popular companions, the Chesa Kubrow was conceived and introduced to execute a similar role: Collect resources, mods, etc. without needing to deviate from mission objectives. The fundamental difference being the “retriever” quality, in which the companion retrieves items within a determined radius to then be delivered to the owner. 

 

Although optimistic that the Chesa Kubrow would act as a dependable companion, in practice it seems to have yielded more frustration than aid. After testing the Chesa’s functionality it is clear that it has deviated far from its intended purpose. 

 

In order to remedy its current state, thorough investigations are in progress to nail down crucial behavioral and environmental drawbacks. These investigations target item prioritization, pickup count, pathing (particular to returning items), efficiency (in retrieving items and following owner), and spawn complications. 

 

With these core features in mind, we are currently discussing potential quick quality of life changes. The first of which being a switch to “instant pickup collection.” In other words, once your Chesa has picked up an item it will no longer need to return to the owner to be collected in your inventory. This is but one idea we are experimenting with and will keep you updated as discussions continue.

 

We would also like to apologize for the extended delay in tackling these issues. We’re hoping to bring the Chesa back to life for you guys with some much needed fixes.

This right here, aside from the speed of pickups, sounds like the perfect fix. Half the issue with the Chesa comes from its horrid AI; often it'll just trot in circles near you instead of giving you the item, or even just run in circles because it can't into pathing.

It would be great if each kubrow had its own priority option you could set, to choose the main target of its primary unique ability, but that'd probably be a pain to sort out, so I dunno.

energy color could be the key... blue-ish for energy for example... red-ish for health etc
