Chesa Kubrow: Hype Destroyed

Kubrows in general have 0 utility value when you consider how expensive it is to make, and maintain one. They are merely a status symbol for players; Kubrows do everything a player can less effectively and efficiently, and  always under-performs against comparable sentinels- especially when considering the fact that sentinels require absolutely zero maintenance, and dont have issues with pathfinding because they can follow you as you do a dash-roll, double-jump onto a platform. What true advantage does a kubrow have over a sentinel? They look badass, and they make you look badass. That's about it. I never take mine when I go farming in void missions, and I often won't take them into the later phases of a sortie because they get absolutely slaughtered just a couple minutes into the round.  It makes no sense why DE made it comparably so much more difficult to get a kubrow over a sentinel and why they actually included a fairly expensive maintenance aspect to a kubrow, when the kubrows aren't absolutely better than the sentinel companions; if I have to pay a periodic 75000 credits, plus maybe some plat here and there for a companion, this companion should be an absolute improvement over the sentinels. But they aren't. So really, Kubrows, especially in end game, purely feel like a cosmetic- like a noggle you can take with you in battle.

What maintenance expense? Oh right, Stabilizers. It's a pretty long time between purchasing a pack of stabilizers, and the credits are easy to make back in a day. Also Huras absolutely outperforms Shade, and no Sentinel does what Sunika and Sahasa do. Kubrows can be revived. Sentinels can't. Kubrows don't use the same mods your weapons do, which i find much more annoying than a monthly stabilizer pack.

Last thread post from DE:   #396   https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?app=forums&module=forums&section=findpost&pid=6723257

Existing Kubrow Issues:

1)  inability to restrict or prioritize kubrow to certain tasks via mod equipping to specific slots, that is to say the sentinels have attack precept mod, kubrows do not

Existing Chesa Issues - Confirmed:

1)  prioritization of items to be retrieved
2*)  delay in retrieved items being conveyed to owner
3) items retrieved per trip, Chesa does not pickup all items in immediate area that should obviously be retrieved

Existing Chesa Issues - Pending Re-confirmation:

1*)  items retrieved often dropped far from owner or during return to owner due to collision with objects or terrain
2*)  some retrieved items never conveyed to owner due to Chesa's inability to physically keep up with owner, upon teleport to owner items has lost
3) pathing

* Update 18.4.6 partially addresses these issues by instantly picking up dropped non-Mod items.

1/13/2016 DE Danielle post #396 in this thread
"Hey Tenno!

With the Carrier and Carrier Prime Sentinel being the most popular companions, the Chesa Kubrow was conceived and introduced to execute a similar role: Collect resources, mods, etc. without needing to deviate from mission objectives. The fundamental difference being the “retriever” quality, in which the companion retrieves items within a determined radius to then be delivered to the owner.

Although optimistic that the Chesa Kubrow would act as a dependable companion, in practice it seems to have yielded more frustration than aid. After testing the Chesa’s functionality it is clear that it has deviated far from its intended purpose.

In order to remedy its current state, thorough investigations are in progress to nail down crucial behavioral and environmental drawbacks. These investigations target item prioritization, pickup count, pathing (particular to returning items), efficiency (in retrieving items and following owner), and spawn complications.

With these core features in mind, we are currently discussing potential quick quality of life changes. The first of which being a switch to “instant pickup collection.” In other words, once your Chesa has picked up an item it will no longer need to return to the owner to be collected in your inventory. This is but one idea we are experimenting with and will keep you updated as discussions continue.

We would also like to apologize for the extended delay in tackling these issues. We’re hoping to bring the Chesa back to life for you guys with some much needed fixes.

Thank you."

Existing Kubrow Issues:

1)  inability to restrict or prioritize kubrow to certain tasks via mod equipping to specific slots, that is to say the sentinels have attack precept mod, kubrows do not

Existing Chesa Issues - Confirmed:

1)  inability to prioritize items to be retrieved:  since Chesa often attacks enemies, disarms (if mod equipped), stares at the ceiling, and retrieves; the items to be retrieved need a prioritization method since 99% of the time 100% of the items are not retrieved
2)  items retrieved per trip, Chesa does not pickup all items in immediate area that should obviously be retrieved and often stands stationary while dropped items are within 10 meters and no enemies are present
3)  pathing:  while pathing has been improved it stills needs work

Existing Chesa Issues - Pending Re-confirmation:

1*)  some retrieved mod items are never conveyed to the owner due to Chesa's inability to physically keep up with owner, upon teleport to owner items are lost

* Update 18.4.6 partially addresses these issues by instantly picking up dropped non-Mod items.

Thank you."

Thank you."

Even with the Chesa fixes that have finally occurred over the last month my Chesa still is not reliable. Every mission there are times when there are no enemies in the area and the Chesa will set idly beside me while I am standing stationary. During this time there are numerous drops within 10m and within the Chesa's line of sight yet it refuses to pick them up. I can even move around and go as close as possible to the dropped item without the warframe picking it up and the Chesa will not retrieve it. On occasion a symptom may be that other drops are very near or immediately on top of that item but have not been picked up by all players. Imagine a defense mission. One mod drops. I pick it up but the other players do not pick it up. Now another mod drops in the exact same place. So, I now see the sparkles from the previously picked up mod as well as a new mod in the very same place. The Chesa will not pick up the new mod. Perhaps there is a problem with client or host identification or marking of these drops where if the drops are too close together they appear as one. Or perhaps the problem occurs whenever drops occur too close together. I truly hope DE commits to fixing these problems. The Chesa was introduced 7/31/2015 yet still doesn't work as advertised. If you were too optimistic DE about your programming ability for the Chesa then just change it already and give the Chesa an AOE pickup centered on it so it works like vacuum and it will be fixed. That way when a mod drop is 5m from the Chesa and it stands there staring at the floor the mod will still be retrieved even if its AI pathing or detection refuses to acknowledge the mod. You have already committed a lot of creativity and time to the Kubrows and upcoming Catbrows so please don't give up and stop before fixing it correctly. Thanks.

Last update with any Chesa Kubrow Ability Fixes: Update 18.6.3 on 3/23/2016

  • Improved the interaction between the Chesa Kubrow’s Scavenge and Retrieve Abilities, reducing the amount of downtime between the Kubrow smashing crates and picking up items

Last Update with any generic Kubrow Fixes: Update 18.8.1 on 4/8/2016

  • Kubrows will now use the same logic as Sentinels by despawning when you have died. Upon revival Kubrows will respawn unless they were killed due to incoming damage during bleedout.

Last thread post from DE:   #396   https://forums.warframe.com/index.php?app=forums&module=forums&section=findpost&pid=6723257

Existing Kubrow Issues:

1)  inability to restrict or prioritize kubrow to certain tasks via mod equipping to specific slots, that is to say the sentinels have attack precept mod, kubrows do not

Existing Chesa Issues - Confirmed:

1)  inability to prioritize items to be retrieved:  since Chesa often attacks enemies, disarms (if mod equipped), stares at the ceiling, and retrieves; the items to be retrieved need a prioritization method since 99% of the time not 100% of the items are retrieved

"Chesa and other Companions
We’ve discussed companions in previous Community Hot Topics, but this topic is specific to quality-of-life improvements that could make existing companions more desirable. Kubrows often come under scrutiny due to their required maintenance, and Chesa has garnered criticism because of the limitations of their Retrieve ability. Chesa’s utility is ultimately a reflection of Carrier’s vacuum, so do you think that homogenization of companion abilities is the best way to increase their value, or do you think there are ways to make each companion unique and desirable? If so, how? Is increasing Chesa’s Retrieve ability sufficient? What would you add or change to make other companions more useful? How often do you change your companions currently? Is there a change that would encourage you to diversify? Post your thoughts and ideas in this thread!"

It is hard to believe but players were first allowed to have Kubrows in Update 14 on July 18, 2014. Yet now, almost two years later, Kubrow functionality, implementation, and usability still has problems which discourage their use by players. It is very disappointing that Kubrows seem to have been brushed aside to join the various other ideas and test elements which are added to the game then left unfinished. I still have hopes that the bulk of time and effort that DE and DE Sheldon are devoting to create yet another companion (Kavats) will also apply to and finally complete the functionality and usability of Kubrows. If it does not, one would have to ask, why devote resources to creating something so similar in concept before even finishing what you started two years ago?

As mentioned in prior comments, my Chesa still doesn't work correctly. I can stand in a room with zero enemies and several drops on the floor within 10m and the Chesa will just stand beside me idle staring off into the distance. How can that be considered acceptable? If you can't fix the AI under your original vision then at least admit it and change the concept so it works reliably. If you cannot make the Chesa reliably pick up drops then re-write the code to essentially dumb it down to a roaming Carrier whereby drops within a small radius of its pathing are collected regardless of if it is smart enough to actually walk directly over each drop.

Also, fix the general Kubrow functionality so we can properly assign precept priorities. If I want my Chesa to simply retrieve and not attack or disarm there is no way to accomplish that. Yet with sentinels if i want carrier to simply vacuum and not attack I remove its attack precept mod thereby insuring it focuses on nothing but picking up drops. Although in that scenario there is no reason to do that since it can simultaneously attack and vacuum.

Are Kavats going to improve on the Kubrow shortcomings and actually be viable alternatives players will want to use over sentinels? If so, are Kubrow simply going be abandoned and left unfinished for the new hot Kavat release? Or will Kavat development follow Kubrow development whereby they get released and receive some attention fixing only glaring issues then ultimately also get forgotten and left unfinished?

Existing Kubrow Issues:

1)  inability to restrict or prioritize kubrow to certain tasks via mod equipping to specific slots, that is to say the sentinels have attack precept mod, kubrows do not

Existing Chesa Issues - Confirmed:

1)  inability to prioritize items to be retrieved:  since Chesa often attacks enemies, disarms (if mod equipped), stares at the ceiling, and retrieves; the items to be retrieved need a prioritization method since 99% of the time not 100% of the items are retrieved

Thank you."

"For clarity, the Retrieval mechanic does not have an item limit. It does however, depend on what is currently in the player's radius when the ability is active. If a player is constantly moving this may skew what Chesa will retrieve, making it look like it's not picking up items it should. Our team has the Retrieval function on the radar for review, and are looking at screenshots/videos of other lingering issues with Kubrow pathing as a whole."

Thank you."

I kinda love the Kubrows man. Especially the Huras species. I used to use the Looter mod and open a few red containers here and there. Then I got a Huras, and maxed out his scavenger mod. 9 out of 10 red containers open and spit out goodies now. Mostly its schlock, but every time that Kubrow opens a red container it grants me 10 energy. Im not sure what the number of affinity is per red container but I took a brand new Kubrow to rank 30 in about 3 1/2 to 4 hours looting like that. Other than in end game content, where else can you make energy like that and affinity like that? I would really like to know.

Im kinda new but these kinds of things impress me, and since I started breeding Kubrows (which are stupid expensive, totally agree with you there) I have been ranking faster.

I would much rather call the DNA stabilizers, prime Kubrow Kibble and stop pretending the green ooze in a needle is anything else. They are a major drain taking the better part of a week to hatch from an egg and mature enough to get them out and about. But I find them pretty rewarding, and I havent even started selling them for platinum yet either!

Lots of cool stuff in those containers. Sure you have to make sure your always in solo mode because no one seems to pay any attention at all to containers, and gets all pissy when you go for every single one and they run off to the end to start the timer on you. But hey. Whatever. Its not that hard to switch the game to solo, and the pretty little kiddies that rush through everything are going to max out, get bored and come to the forums to yell NERF!!! :)

Kubrows are kinda awesome!!
