The 8mm version wasn't that bad. Not DESIGNED for trench warfare and suffered as a result. That is NOT the version the US AEF got supplied. The 30-06 Chauchat had the DUBIOUS distinction of being good for one thing and one thing only. You could take the parts and make a still. It broke gunners' cheekbones, jammed at the drop of a hat, and basically couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Small WONDER US doughboys begged, borrowed or STOLE anything else they could get their hands on. Some of them apparently even 'borrowed' MG 08 machine guns (based on the Maxim design) from German positions they took and CARRIED THEM, water jackets and all, when they moved instead of trying to mess with the Chauchats. The IDEA is not a bad one. The plan was a light machine gun that would be used for fire and maneuver. So, they minimized weight. The PROBLEM was that they were never USED for fire and maneuver and in the trenches they became utterly useless very quickly. Funny thing is, many weapons designed later (BREN gun, BAR and MG42 among others) used a lot of similar design features, MINUS the open magazine. They had learned by then. tolivetodie Posted October 25, 2015 Author Share Posted October 25, 2015 (edited) These type of weapons usually suffers from cartridge like Bar and etc because of bolt head and cartridge's rim needs to be made precisely and mechanism should be right for conditions ... Even today some weapons (some ar15 variants, pistol it can happen on every weapon) can even be effected by steel chasing(its not looks a big difference right? but no it is different) like sg556 r sometimes jams on steel wolf ammo etc... But when you in a war you dont have time for these small detail which makes big differences at first...They did the job they have to and now they are history but their successors are alive today like ar variants , ak variants go and search all these weapons history and you gonna find a problematic weapon on its star :) Edited October 25, 2015 by tolivetodie Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
