The ability icon at the bottom right is heavily darkened and your energy begins to drain.

Thanks, but I think you misunderstood, or I just didn't express myself well enough.

I am asking about abilities that you key once to start and have to key a 2nd time to end, like Nyx's 4th ability which begins absorbing damage when u press 4 once and release the damage when u press 4 again.

On the arsenal, under abilties there will be a stat with the name "energy drain".

And that's exactly what I was referring to. The icon becomes dark, your energy drains, you can press it again to end it.

In addition to what LazerSkink has mentioned each ability (that I can think of) has a pretty obvious visual that it's in use(Ember's explosions, Equinox slash procs). If it doesn't have a timer over the ability then you know it's not based on duration/health either.
