Question About Death Marks

This has been puzzling me recently and I'm not quite sure about it. So when you obtain a Death Mark from like Stalker, and he shows up in a mission and you kill him, does that mean that the Death Mark has been consumed? Or does it only get consumed if he kills you?

It's consumed whenever he shows up, no matter the issue.

It's consumed if Stalker despawns while his target is in the mission.

 

I tested this last night. Shadow Stalker showed up while I was trying to level some stuff, whining about The Jackal, and since I didn't want to spend an hour running in circles away from a boring and nonthreatening boss (seriously, Shadow Stalker is a disappointment on every level) I just quit the mission. I went to kill The Jackal for hte heck of it, and Stalker didn't send me an email

 

However, any player playing this game will have so many death marks from Stalker that you will never, EVER run out (unless you just never fight any boss more than once)
