"If inviting friends over to our Orbiters is indeed coming as some have speculated, it means people don't have to download all your photos to have them display for them as well.  I remember playing Team Fortress 2, a folder on your hard drive would just keep filling with other people's custom Sprays (mainly ponies, anti-ponies, borderline porn, actual porn, memes, and combinations of those) and just bloat your installation.  It is absolutely not the same situation, but it's something to consider.  Sure, there are ways around it (like relegating other people's custom content to a specific folder that is routinely emptied) but the safest and easiest method is to not allow it in the first place.  Also, Imagine a new player gets invited to another player's ship with the pretense of helping, and it's full of shock images and gore.  This won't happen often, but they shouldn't happen at all.

If not, they would likely still want to host your stuff on their server, like they do Clan Badges, just because that system's already in place.  Keep in mind, every other person you see can be represented as a pretty short list:  This frame with these weapons, with these attachments with colors 1,2,3,4,5 for each, and this animation set.  That's a relatively tiny amount of data being transferred, whereas posters (which would by necessity be fairly high-resolution) would by comparison be a monstrous amount of data.  Granted, I don't see why it would be necessary to upload them to external servers at all if we're using Peer-to-Peer connections, but whatever, it's not my decision to make.

I would expect the system to continue to expand over time.  Maybe in the future we'll be allowed to use screenshots taken in-game, and maybe someday we can pay to have custom images approved like we can Clan Badges."

-Me, in a similar thread.  Personally, I'd rather they abandon the idea of visiting other Orbiters and just letting the displays read from local files with no uploading in the first place.

hmm then wouldnt games like TF2 which allow custom sprays be sued? modding communities like L4D2 bringing actual game models would probably have been a bigger issue at that too. im not too sure about it. DE earns money from the unit that displays the image, and not the image itself, no? and in if such a process where DE does make money via fanart, then isn't that openly infringement of copyright? one of the few images Ninja has used is his own artwork which was listed in the actual available fanart section for other players to put it into as well.

im not sure about the emblem, but it's a server-hosted file for the emblem so i believe it might have some issues. but if the file is locally hosted, i dont think it might have been a problem for players though.

No on both TF2 and L4D2 as both don't have purchases to include sprays or playermodels. If you had to pay for them, then that would be a red flag.

You're still selling something that can be used for the images. So it still counts towards that.

I'm pretty sure Fan Art is selected or submitted to be included during Prime Time. Some of the fan arts that are ingame at the moment date back in Prime Time #29
