In the trade tab it says "We do not enforce trades for promises, clan membership, and other favors.Trade for items only."

What if someone promises to give you an item after you've traded something, not right away, but maybe a few hours or a day later?

A promise means nothing. Set up the trade for later, when everything can be traded at once.

Promises are not enforced. everything is buyer beware. If you do decide to go against the advice, the risk is completely on you. DE isn't going to enforce a trade for anything past the actual trade screen when the trade happens

To minimize the risk of scamming, you should ensure all trade sessions are modular. For instance, buying 10 Arcanes at 10p each, trade 50p for 5 twice, rather than 100p for 5 and a mod for the other 5.
