hatchetman
So this is Anti-Aliasing SMAA (Medium) vs TAA 8x (High). Why is TAA which is a "high" setting look way worse than a "medium" setting? Spoiler SMAA (Medium) - Everything is smooth TAA 8x (High) - Everything is jagged and blurry Edit: Posted before patch "The Glast Gambit: Hotfix 19.5.6". These 2 "fixes" for TAA have no effect on this. Fixed screen consuming darkness as a result of having TAA enabled. Fixed changes to TAA Sharpen and Bloom Intensity not reverting when choosing not to save settings. Edited January 4, 2017 by hatchetman
NightmareT12
I don't really know if they're supposed to talk about image quality or processing power. I'm pretty sure it should be the latter. Anyways, Steve has said he hoped to get a few more high end options for AA throughout this year. We'll see how that goes. Owlrrex
If you read up on those Anti-Aliasing options (TXAA and SMAA), you'll find mulitple things: 1. TXAA is an algorithm by NVidia. If you don't use an NVIDIA-Card of GTX600+, it won't work as intended or at all. 2. TXAA is specialised in reducing flickering edges with very fast movements. In turn, it has worse performance and a bit more blur than SMAA, which is one of the best Anti-Aliasing-Methods for calm scenes right now. So, in your test case TXAA will always be worse than SMAA, by its fundamental design. Hope that helped you a bit.
Arniox
I get the same problem kinda. I get a really fuzzy blurry effect but the TAA makes all lines and edges look really smooth. But the blurry effect is incredibly annoying and makes my eyes bleed. So I stick with SMAA

I had just assumed DE shortened the appreviation more than usual. That's what happens when you assume! Funnily, it appears that TAA (as well as TXAA) is specialised in smoothing out movements. So, the second point of mine still stands: In calm scenes, TAA might be less applicable overall.

However I don't like motion blur and the fuzzy affect that TAA seems to give is annoying enough that I won't use it.
Sarattas
I checked TXAA right after patch with sharpening and I have to agree with OP. It was looking so much worse then SMAA that I thought its a bug. I just reverted my settings back to SMAA for now. Also I didn't check TXAA in mission during intense movement, but it is just looking too blurry for me when I'm in Orbiter - like I would play on half of my screen resolution :( Edited January 4, 2017 by Sarattas
hatchetman
With TAA on it looks really bad on those flying nano spore clouds on infested missions. It's mostly on the edges of the cloud where it looks like glittery blurred boxes, haven't been able to get a decent close screenshot to show yet. BTW I have a 970 so I have plenty of breathing room to increase quality and that's what I was looking for. I think TAA got enabled when I was playing Warframe in VR. With SMAA everything is crystal clear, with TAA blurry. Also staying with SMAA actually. In spite of this its absolutly great that DE is constantly improving graphics - thx for this.
