Newb Question on Weapon Rank and Mastery Level

Once any of my gear is level 30 do I have to get fresh unranked gear to keep pushing the needle on mastery?

Mastery points are awarded for first 30 levels of a weapon/frame. You cannot gain mastery from a weapon that was already levled up to 30 by you in the past. That includes both bying new weapons and formaing the weapon. Once you level something up to 30 you cannot gain more mastery points out of it by any means. In that sense game both rewards you and pushes you to try new frames and weapons.

For the most part, yes.  There are a few other ways to increase Mastery, but leveling new weapons and 'Frames is the best way to gain mastery fast.

Gaining Mastery Points

Below are the ways a player can gain Mastery Points:

• Bringing up the ranks of Weapons, Sentinel weapons and Archwing weapons earn 100 mastery points for each rank gained up to Rank 30 for a total of 3,000.

• Bringing up the ranks of Warframes, Companions and Archwings earn 200 mastery points for each rank gained up to Rank 30 for a total of 6,000.

• Clearing the main objective of a Mission node and extracting will grant an average of ~63 mastery points.

• Victory against the opponent frame in a Junction grants 1,000 mastery points.

Take note that each individual equipment will only grant its mastery points once per rank per variant — Polarization, selling a Rank 30 equipment and then purchasing & reusing it will NOT grant mastery points again, including in the event that a copy of an already max-ranked equipment is obtained and used. If an equipment below max rank is sold, then purchased and reused, only the ranks previously not gained will grant mastery points.

Variants of original weapons count as a different equipment for mastery ranking; Prime, Syndicates, Vandal, Wraith, Prisma and the Detron Mara.

Excess mastery points are not lost if a player reaches the amount required to advance a rank — these will automatically fill the next mastery bar, displayed only once the player has succeeded on the rank-up test.

-Acquiring copies of the same weapon (i.e: a fresh Mk1-Braton) when you already leveled it will not give you more xp.

-Installing Forma and leveling it with Forma will not give more xp, but open options for increased lethality.

-However, acquiring variants of the same weapon (i.e: Braton, Braton Vandal - if it'll ever come back -, and Braton Prime) and leveling those does give xp.

-Xp from all items (Warframes, weapons, pets, Archwing-related things) contributes to Mastery Rank. The more you build and use, the more Mastery you obtain.

-Even when hitting a Mastery Rank-up/Level up, you can gain xp for the next rank.

So is it possible to farm mastery points by repeating the same mission or it rewards points only the first time?

   Only the first time you complete a mission gives you mastery rank xp (junctions included), so no, it can't be farmed like that.

At this very moments it is the highest anyone can reach, but the maximum is 30.
