Dre Beats Worth It?

500? ummm, are these for home use only, or out and about. For home use you can get lots of great senns, akg, audio technia, beyr, denon that would be much much much better than beats. If you want an all-rounder set of headphones i wouldn't advise spending over $150 (all-rounder as in out and about use and at home use)

(cant tell if you're trollin or not tbh)

If you have $500 to &!$$ away on headphones then I am incredibly envious. With that kind of budget I assume you already have an amazing gaming headset. Bose headphones are great, and very very comfortable. The noise cancelling really takes some getting used to, and unless you are sleeping on a plane, I personally wouldn't trust the environment while using noise cancelling headphones. For example, you are walking around outside or at the mall. While the noises of the environment may be annoying, they provide you with situational awareness. Don't want to be getting hit by a car because you couldn't see or hear it coming.

EDIT: Now that you say home use only, then yeah, Bose are probably the way to go.

You would think for someone who loves/produces their own music, would at least make Good quality Headphones..I guess the Beats really are a market scam then..

- So far the Bose have really good feedback, I just don't like the way some of them look.

I love my Senn HD595, super comfy but are also semi-open (you can hear things around you and ppl can kinda hear your music).

ATH-M50 are widely recommended as a good set, they're closed and have good bass.

ATH-AD700 are also widely recommended, these are open and have a good soundscape (sound placement and directional sound)

For more info I'd probably rummage around websites like Head-fi or other types of sites for much more info

EDIT: I would not recommend bose headphones for studio work, grab a nice set of beyr, denon, akg, audio-technia, or maybe senns for that

Right, despite having absolutely no knowledge about Headphones and audiophile things, how about the Sennheiser HD558?

The HD558 are great for the price, they don't require any external amplification and should run just fine on whatever you plug them into. They should be really comfortable, circum-aural (around the ear), open headphones.

TL;DR Great for the price, compare to ATH-M50 for more bass and closed, or ATH-AD700 for a "wider" sound scape

EDIT: (directed at OP) I'd suggest that for a first pair of "high-end" headphones you spend around $100-200, $250 at the most. All this stems off of when you reach up into the $400 range you need a better source, (music files and amplification/dac) to really appreciate what you're paying for. Which ends up making the $400 purchase a $1,500 purchase lol.

I'm a fan of Bose stuff when I can afford it. Got a pair of their oldass box speakers when I want the walls to move. Things must be >10 years old. I'm also a fan of the cheaper in-ear buds. $30 gets you a nice pair for being out and about, and sound quality is always good; I've currently got a pair made my Yamaha, but there are some made by Sony that are also decent and have the in-line volume control.

I'd suggest buying from reputable audio companies much like suggested above like bose, sennheiser, etc and do some research as well other than this if you haven't. Audiophile blogs will probably have a list of awesome headphones. Personally I'd buy Sol Republic Master Tracks ($200) if I had a $500 budget for headphones mainly cause i like the sound, its stylish, almost indestructible and has interchangeable parts in the event of something breaking like the cord or headband. Not to mention a friend of mine who had beats recently got Sol republics and now swears by them.

Ok, I think I'm sold on the Senn HD 595s.  I fell in love with the design, and the reviews are all outstanding.  A lot of you seem to favor senn too.

- I'm glad I didn't cave in and buy the Beats.  Thank you guys for all the advice.  I was afraid I'd get flamed again because all of the other sites I forum on just flamed me for making this thread ;_;

- Thanks again!

PS: You saved me a lot of money DeadMice.

No prob no prob, just glad to help someone through what i went through when i bought my first pair >.<

And on most Audiophile sites there've been so many of the beats threads (some legit some troll) that people got tired of them and just treat them all as troll.

Hope you enjoy them when you get them in the mail (or at a store if you have one near you)  Should be nice and comfy.

Oh, only saw this thread just now. I'm an audiophile myself and you have a lot of good options at the $500 mark. The Senn HD595 is a solid choice, although I think you should have gone for their sexier and better sounding successor, the HD598 which is only $220+ at Amazon.

To fully take advantage if I had a $500 budget, I'd go for a Senn HD600 (around $350-400) with a decent amp/DAC like the FiiO E17 ($100ish). There you have it, a good home setup that will handle pretty much any musical genre and gaming.

Should you wish to go up the ladder further the HD600 scales very well with aftermarket cables, my favorites are the Zu Mobius. Better amps will also unleash their full potential, I'd recommend the JDS Labs Objective 2, Schiit Valhalla (if you want tubey rich mids) or Asgard (solid state neutrality).

This, this would be the next step if you enjoy what you hear but want a little more.  Although I'm not sure an HD595 would benefit to much from an amp >.< .

-I apologize to your wallet in advance
