The Grineer are ugly, yes, but there is a reason. They are clones, and they put themselves back together once they fall apart (which I assume is pretty often, as they decay constantly), which makes them that ugly. Look at their wiki page for more information.

The design of the Orcs in the 2 Middle-Earth games (Shadow of Mordor & Shadow of War) is one of the ways to make something ugly in a good direction, if they made them like the orcs from the original LotR trilogy then they would look a lot worse but still not as ugly as the Grineer lol

I have no clue what you mean by saying looking ugly and good at the same time.
You know "looking good/bad" is subjective, don't you?

And what is even the question in this thread?
If someone doesn't like the look of something in the game, then he probably wont play the game? So what?
People who like the look will play the game. And that's what matters. DE should not try to please everyone. Then this attempt will always fail.

I get what OP is saying -- a bad first impression nearly killed the Earthbound series in 1994 -- but I don't think it applies in Warframe's marketing. When you see the Grineer in marketing material, they're posed as villains, much like the orcs in the Shadow of Mordor example already mentioned, thus contextualizing their appearance and giving potential customers an inkling of what the villains are like (and villains are a rather big part of any video game)

Well most of commercialism revolves around the warframes. Grinner make minimal appearance in the marketing segments and promo materials.

They even appear far less than the orcs in Shadow of War and Mordor so your fear is too...  (forgot the single word for when you worry too much)

Xenomorphs also ugly as hell (in your eyes puny humans ... shrieeek.) but still have consumer catching power and a wide fan base. The grineers not looks terrible at that bad way.

Hell even the Necromorphs have a fan base. I really don't get this thread.

This just in: Ugliness relevant to the characters and stories is bad for marketing.

Jokes aside, I have no idea what you are trying to get across OP. That simply isn't the case. The characters may be ugly, but the only thing that can affect engagement from the target audience aesthetics wise, is if they dislike the design.

Ugly/bad design is not the same as objectively ugly characters etc. Especially when said characters are supposed to be ugly. For example, Vor is ugly, sure, but his design is great. I personally like his look and his ugliness because it's done well. Same thing applies to literally any media.

When they commercialize Warframe as a game and a product, aren't these specific very ugly designs of the Grineer causing problems with the audience and its marketing? When they see the trailer of the game it shows Captain Vor who is probably the ugliest character in the game and it gives a bad first taste. The Warframes themselves and most of the other characters are very well designed but the enemies, especially the Grineer are ugly in a bad direction, there are many good ways to make an enemy ''ugly'' without being aethestically bad looking. The masked grineer are kinda better because they are covered but the majority of the others are very ugly designed.

The Grineer are the best-themed faction in the game.

If you are looking for where they draw their inspiration from, it's probably from the 80's Robotech Macross saga's Zentradi:

Cloned miners turned into a military force for their masters with ships shockingly similar to the Grineer aesthetic.  There's a little Japanime influence (Yokai and the Dystopian Battle Angel Alita comics) also.

Basically:

Rick Hunter:. Us

Zentradi:. Grineer

Robotech Masters:  Orokin/Corpus

Invid: Sentients

Having unique aesthetic is not necessary bad. Some people like these skins also..it's after all personal preference. But warframe doesn't take the usual edgy route in design that's for sure.

The thing is that I don't think that Nova or Ember deluxe are unique designs. They actually feel rather generic when put in comparison next to all available games.

That's precisely what I loved when I started to play this game : the unicity of its enemy design.

They are so twisted & originals, like no other game.

So, to me, it's a kind of wise marketing move. And besides, you even get attached to the lovely Clem.

So no problem at all for me.

I'm sure they could market Vor action figures with detachable pants.

The playable characters are more important than the enemies though since you'll want to shoot them in the face anyways. The Warframe designs did actually keep the game from grabbing my interest right away for a long time till my friends eventually started playing it long enough for me to ask questions about it. Especially with stuff like Hydroid running around making my favorite element look bad.

Now if everyone was on par with Ash Koga back then well it woulda happened sooner. :)

I love the grineer design and story. I wish they had more attention lore-character wise. Give us the side of view of a Grineer Trooper, let us know how they think.

Grineer were pretty much slave clones who fought the fck out of slavery and built an empire. Now that's what i call revolution.
