A Call For Civility

Recommended Posts

I want to start off by saying I was born a gamer. I played those classic Nintendo games, now I've moved on to these next-generation titles like Warframe. I love gaming, and I love, for the most part, gaming communities. I love when my fellow gamers provide constructive criticism that help developers improve their craft. I love when gamers help out their fellow gamers; show them the ropes and teach them how to survive.

But in today's generation, I never thought the days would come where I would find myself appalled by my fellow gamers. Gamers are a passionate bunch, and as such I always thought we would know how to deal with things. We have no problem dealing with emotional problems shown to us in Heavy Rain or Mass Effect, or solving monetary situations when it comes to purchasing our favorite entertainment.

I, of course, am talking about the way gamers interact with each other. Some react how I mentioned in the opening to this post: with a calm, collective manner. Far too often do gamers using online gaming and gaming forums such as this one to belittle and insult each other, both on a personal level and to tear down perfectly fine ideas. Sadly, these things don't simply happen on occasion; they're a daily occurrence; a relentless, saddening assault on those that shouldn't be belittled or insulted in the first place.

I often force myself to shut off my laptop and take a break from the internet, or refuse to join a public match because so many members of the gaming community are senselessly cruel and heartless individuals. All in all, I hate myself for having expected more from my fellow gamers.

In conclusion, maybe there is some slimmer of hope left; a silver lining in the clouds. Maybe we can show the developers and society that we aren't a bunch of childish men and women who spew slurs and insults from the comfort of anonymity. We need to show that we're everyday people that just enjoy an online life as well as an offline one. Maybe when that day comes, I'll have that respect for my fellow gamers once again. Hopefully.

*claps* Couldn't agree more, why are humans so ignorant? We must show we are different at once. This is one of the very many reasons I made a clan. To shut myself away from the mean and trolls. I used the clan as an almost private community, where if you are rude or being a troll I can kick you out and be done with it. Only playing Private matches with my clan is fine, but sometimes it gets to a point where it's almost sad. The forums are pretty bad too, people are always rude.

Far too often people become heinously offended when you even appear to disagree with them on a creative level and they will go as far as verbally assaulting you until you back off. It's hostile. I've talked in circles with people who don't realize they're in agreement with me.

I agree with this post, I really do. Ive long been bothered by the amount of rude replies people give eachother on this forum.

But its also important to remember, that we can all have a bad day. We all make mistakes. When you are fustrated, its best to turn your machine off and cool off, but you don't think clear when fustrated/angry etc, so its easier to make mistakes.

That being said, its no excuse to treat someone badly

I deeply sympathize with you sentiments but quite frankly don't have nearly the faith in humanity it would take to ever expect an improvement in anonymous behaviour.  Call me cynical but between the raw anonymity driven "freedom"  of net personas and the generally juvenile approach to interpersonal interaction of a large vocal chunk of the online gaming community the arena is and will always be toxic if you choose to submit yourself to the unfiltered masses.

I too wish for civility, but the raw fact of the matter is even occasional spasms of acknowledgement outside of insult is too much to expect from most online arenas.  There is too much self entitlement, too little recourse for the injured save feeding back into the cycle.  We are dealing with GIGO on a massive scale (Garbage in, Garbage out) but it only takes one loud voice in many to poison the well and create a toxic feedback loop.

Taking a break is a good method to deal with it but I also have suggestions of my own.  I mentioned that the unfiltered community is toxic yes, but you can filter it.  My disillusionment is such that if I am ever set to public it is likely a mistake on my part than an intentional choice. I build a circle of like minded and fun to play with individuals and stay near that base.  Pub games are aggravating for a number of reasons not he least of which is an absolute lack of communication, thereby cutting the social aspect of gaming right out and leaving an opening for vitriol to fill the voice for any disagreements or frustration no matter how minor.

If you want civility you have to carve out an island where it can exist and cultivate it, to expect civility writ large from the masses is a noble but doomed dream.

It all boils down to selfishness, really. That's what I live against. I try to be as selfless as possible because look, people want to look good, they want things to go their way and their way only, it's what causes fights, they want, for example, 'gender swapping' and they want it NOW, you try to say that it is unnecessary and they'll attack you, because they see you as a threat at getting what they want. It's pathetic.

Anonymity provided my Internet allows people to do as they please without repercussion. When ideas collide, sense of security is loss, or whatever reason that conflict occur - people will react in a quick, senseless manner without much data to back their side of arguments. Emotion clouds reason, as usual.

Just a nature of man.

Yeah it's pretty bad. While I do clown around quite a bit on these forums with my gifs, etc. I found that lately whenever I jump into a conversation here on the forums to aid another tenno or a newbie, sometimes I get pulled into a pi$$ing match.

Last week there were tons of threads about nerfing Nova, and all I did was ask that people consider other variables like health and sheilds, I never offered an opinion or took a side, but was pulled into one. 3 other posters kept trying to take apart my posts with seemingly intelligent posts that were actually quite hostile in nature.

In another post I simply was excited about the new ammo mods and said that if the mods worked as I thought they would (they were just released) we'd be able to replace the ammo drum mod and got a reply, "Ammo Drum was never needed. If youre doing everything right you wont have a spot for this mod." So quick to shoot me down. Meanwhile I was just happy that we got something new and wanted to see what it does.

I feel really sorry for folks who have such terrible/unfulfilling lives that they need to feel better about themselves by belittling/trashing others here on the forums.

It's not me being sensitive... It's just sad that when behind the veil of anonymity, the worst sides of some people come out and heavily amplified too.

Frankly it's ridiculous that people have to argue a point to be right, when this is a forum where us gamers are sharing opinions, ideas and information.

People have forgotten the golden rule, "If you don't have anything good to say than keep quiet."

I always thought that was a dumb rule.  If I'm being an idiot (which happens more than I'd like), I'd like it if people told me so I stop being an idiot.  I don't mean when I'm just joking around but more along the lines of "wtf were you thinking" idiot mode.

Yea, I prefer the cold hard truth than people avoiding to tell you what you are doing. Otherwise, you have no idea what the hell you are doing wrong.

Yeah that depends on what a person's definition of good is. Pleasant/pleasing vs. truly good. Because if someone was pointing out to me that I was wrong in a constructive manner it's actually a very good thing.

There are some really hostile folks here on the forums, there are allot of great folks too. It's just life I guess. =)
