I had heard fraps really kills the frame rate, what about xfire?

Xfire is just bad in general. Quality is poor for the resources it uses.

Also current versions of fraps don't chew up framerates for me. Earlier versions however..

Wow, no one mentioned "Bandicam"!!!

Pretty similar to fraps, it even lets you record videos at a better quality, however only at a limited time for FREE.

I can't find anywhere sayings Bandicam is free for a limited time. All I'm finding are torrents/ trial cracks.

LOL! No, that's not what i meant!

I mean you can only record videos at a set limit of time period, say maybe 2-3 minutes videos and that's it for a free version.

MSI Afterburner. DXtory. Both really good. DXtory isn't free though. But you can get it for free. Hint hint. Nudge nudge.

When using any recording software. If it doesn't work. Go in to the warframe launcher settings and uncheck the 64 bit, then try to record. That may be the issue.

Use MSI Afterburner. It's free and comes with a pretty great video capturing tool, but keep in mind that you'll have to run the game in 32-bit since there is no 64-bit version of the program yet (change through the game launcher). MSI is mostly a graphics card performance monitor and booster, but you can turn this stuff off and just use the video capturing.

I've used both fraps and DXTory.

Fraps is pretty much able to record everything, except for the Windows 8 desktop. The downside is that it has to sync your framerate to multiples of the video framerate. So if you're want to record at 30fps, you need to maintain 30fps, 60fps, or 90fps.  Recent versions have allowed larger than 4GB files so it's easier to maintain. Obviously files are large.

DXTory has some advantages over fraps though. It works in most DirectX games, although it's a little less compatible than fraps. The advantages are:

1) It doesn't need a sync'd framerate.

2) It can record multiple audio streams into the end simultaneously. So if you post process footage, you can independently control the game sound, Mumble/chat, and your own mic if you so desire.

3) It can span multiple hard drives if you want (psuedo RAID without using Windows dynamic disk).

In general I find that once set up, DXTory is a much more enjoyable experience to work with over Fraps.
