Range/Afk timer for bounties to deal with leaches

Recommended Posts

So to start this off, yes I play bounties on public, it's a multiplier game, I enjoy it much more when playing with other people.  So I don't think solo or pre-made squad is a answer to the problem.  The problem is leachers.

So I do the Tier 3, 4 and 5 bounties regularly to cap my rep.  Without fail, in at LEAST one of them, there is someone who's not there to do bounties.  His there to fish, mine or look for wisps.  I could understand if the match making was anytime you went to the plains you got put into a bounty, but that's no how it works, these people are picking the bounty and expecting others to do it for them.  So I have a suggestion to fix that.

So instead of a AFK timer we have a Range requirement.  There is 3 parts to this as well so it doesn't mess up anyone whos actually trying to do the bounties.

1. - if you are more then 150 meters outside of the bounties area, you don't get a reward.

2. - if you miss out on a bounty stage you can no longer get the rare drops (Yes that means everyone gets their own drops, it was a bug before so why can't it be intentional?)

3. - You are immune to the Range Requirement for 30-45 seconds when joining a squad.  So yes that means if you join and the squad is just finishing or finished Stage 1, you still get the reward and rep and can still get the rare reward.  Let' face it, this is here to help stop leaches not mess with people who are actually there to do the mission.

There would be needed 1 or change, capture and bomb recuse missions can no longer spawn 1100 meters away.  So that people wouldn't hop in their archwing, speed over and screw over their squad.  The rest give you enough to get there is someone does that.

Like I said originally, the reason I am putting this idea out there is because on a good day I get 1 out of 3 bounties with a leacher.  I have had a lot more.  I have multiple, multiple screenshots of people 1000 meters away fishing instead of doing the bounty.  I will take the MR4 trying to do the bounty over a MR24 fishing anyway.

I am going to suggest a few scenarios that make your current proposal unfair, but really this is more to do with the numbers you selected than the actual process suggested

Scenario 1

  • You load into the plains at the Cetus gates (because this is always where you start, regardless of the actual bounty stage location)
  • The rest of the bounty is happening somewhere 1900m away (I have had this happen, RNG likes to troll me)
  • You immediately start running (let's not assume you can just throw archwings at the problem to "prove you're not a leech", since that's unfair on you) towards the bounty
  • This takes longer than the proposes immunity time, and the others complete that stage before you get within 150m (which is quite small in Warframe terms)

At this point, you might as well quit and find a new bounty, because you won't get the rare drops you were really hoping for even if you put the work in.  Bad experiences for all involved.

Scenario 2

You and some others are running a bounty

  • You're low level, doing bounties and do not have the Archwing unlocked yet
  • The teammates (or at least one person) does have it, and the next bounty location is far off and quick to complete (e.g. an Assassination or Capture), and some distance off
  • You aren't able to cover the distance, despite doing your best to, before the high level teammates have reached the target and killed them, completing the stage. You're outside the 150m eligibility radius for this reason

At this point, you've just been punished for not having unlocked a piece of equipment which is progress locked yet, or because you don't have/can't yet afford/don't wish to use the consumable Archwing launcher just to keep up...but you're trying to put the effort in to complete the bounty with everyone else (i.e. not leeching through deliberate act). You feel punished, and not incentivised to ever do these bounties again because it could become wasted effort

There are more examples that could be crafted here, and like I said my aim is not to attack your proposal, but rather to highlight that the eligibility criteria you propose run a big risk of locking people out who shouldn't be (who are trying and just failing), and instead are focusing on punishing all possible leechers - this is not the experience DE, or we as a community, should encourage even if leechers annoy us.

My own suggestions based off your idea that I think would help with avoiding this kind of "false positive" leecher exclusion are: You are eligible to receive the reward for a bounty stage if you meet ANY of the following:

  • You participated in the previous bounty stage (any number of kills/contribution to the objective)
  • You are within 500m of the bounty objective (I picked this because I think it's roughly 20% of the map radius, so intentionally huge) at time of completion
  • This is the first bounty stage completed since you loaded into the Plains

The idea is not to exclude all leeches, but rather to NOT exclude "accidental" leeches or inexperienced players (or people who just plain make an error), so it'll still be a process leeches can take advantage of...but not as trivially.  The goal is to ensure you never create a "false positive" exclusion, so it's intentionally light in nature, and currently resolves both of the above problem scenarioes and a few more to do with range and movement speed.

Scenario 1 is easily avoided by just making the first bounty always a long one as well as close to Cetus.  With the immunity you receive on load in, as my idea suggests, even then if you loaded in on the last few seconds of the reward you are covered.

Scenario 2 is already covered in the suggestion.  Those quick bounties would no longer be spawn 1000 meters away.

Previous stage rewards would just mean leechers would do what they wanted during the first 3 stages then fly to the 4th so they could insure they got the rare reward chance on the 5th drop.  I don't know about yourself, but most of the leechers I have come across has been MR20 plus, chances are they have archwings.

I also did a good few bounties where I had low MR in my squad, and I am LOW, I'm talking tier 5 bounties with MR2, 3, 4.  Every single one of those were doing there best to do the bounty.  I don't want to mess them up, distance between bounty stages can be changed, a timer but the Range/Afk between stages can be added.  Lots of things can make this work.  I still think this is a good idea, it needs polish for sure.

Also the reason I went with the distance I did, because 500 meters is a lot, I can be within range of a lot of bounties while fishing in the lake with 500 meters to play with.

I have actually given up on doing bounties now because the leecher problem has become so bad.  There will always be leechers in Warframe, I had them before, however the bounty system makes it way too easy to do it without any downside.
