De Why Are We Defending So Much?

For ninjas we sure put a lot emphasis on defense missions which seem to be the missions everyone really wants to do for the xp and mods and such. Why not have missions that change the flow a bit, I feel like we are always on the backfoot as Tenno because the biggest and baddest missions are defense oriented.

I propose assault missions. Where whatever faction is waiting for us in defense positions on some outpost or colony all with trenches, cover and fortifications like turrets or whatever. I'm sure DE has some super cool imagination that could fill the gaps. But missions like these would place less emphasis on defense hero warframes like, frost nova, and Vauban. They would be still be useful but they would be mandatory for higher level assault missions.

A thought, grinneer have the high ground at some Tenno dig site. Mountainside. They have wires, mini walls and placements, lancers are moving cover to cover, melee units are closing the gap, and the goal? EXTERMINATION!!!!! Or we could revamp exterminate missions to have this kind of setup. There isn't much point to wiping out every living being on a ship when you could blow it up. And it's more interesting when they are waiting for you, expecting you to come and get them.

TL;dr add more attack style missions to balance out the defense oriented ones.

more variation is always a plus in my eyes. not really sure how any of that all would work out with warframe, but i cant say they are bad ideas either.

Sounds good to me, and the tactical possibilities are practically endless.  You could use tank hero frames like Rhino and Frost, Rhino Iron Skins and charges forward into the main group while everyone else comes back around, Frost Snow Globes and keeps attention etc, or you could go for more stealth frames like Ash or people with Shades to stealth infiltrate and go around without killing as many people.  This could go all kinds of places.  :D

With all this cover I would like to see more frames with very accurate attack abilities like Ash. He can teleport to close the gap across killing fields, shrunken enemies running for cover, and blade storm a defensive position and have it crumble. Grineer should get structures and emplacements that can nullify AoE attacks. Can't be steamrolling these guys, no sir.

COMPLETELY with you here, this is much cooler. I don't mind defense, but it is a bit weird that we actually don't go on the offensive more in higher levels. Exterminate is one thing, sure, but..... quite dull compared to this. Approved!

Why not? Maybe he has some original and good ideas no one else has? You don't HAVE to read them all, you know.

Yeah, we definitely need something....more. For example, maybe we could enter a place and had to survive or beat lots of strong enemies like a group of Hyena. Could implement some slight tweaks and improvements, plus maybe some story (perhaps we were too late with the original prototype) and done. I dunno, but something that would be some variety instead of boring defence missions.

I find that this idea has potential. At the very least, it will have enough difference from the usual mission. Even a simple version which is like attacking an important thing like the crypod in defence missions (complete with regeneration) will be good.

 

 

I'll add a variant, maybe called Suppression mission type:

 

There are multiple objectives in a defended position (not so far apart, but not next to each other) that needs to be damaged beyond a certain threshold and kept so for a period of time (the countdown can be similar to mobile defense). The Tenno team has to damage the objectives enough, and prevent engineers and other enemy troops from reaching them. Engineers will repair the objectives and resets the timer if it raises above the damaged threshold. ("destroying" the objective will require the engineer to spend a longer reconstruction time, before the objective's base structure can be rebuilt health start increasing. This will make it possible for a smaller Team to do the mission, but will be harder than a full team).

 

The mission is completed when all the objectives are kept damaged below a threshold for a fixed time. If any objective is repaired above the level, the timer is turned off, and will re-start afresh when all the objectives are suppressed again.

 

The objectives themselves may not be so far apart, but may be occluded from each other and may require that the Team split up (say into 2 pairs) for greater efficiency. The exact fine-tuning can be adjusted, but the intent is to provide a different style of play from other mission types.

 

Additional idea (applicable to future defense missions as well. This sort of turn the game into "Tower Defense" except Tenno replaces Towers)): creatable/destructible barriers/portals. Access routes to the objectives can be doors that can be sealed off to delay the enemies. when the enemies want to travel through the blocked point, they will have to spend extra time (e.g. travel slowly over a delay region, clearing physical barriers with damage, or hacking doors) to clear the way before passing through. There can be optional warnings that warns the team with a blocked point is being breached.

some ideas for "blocked" point:

 

- attacking some natural terrain creating a small landslide/rockslide to temporary block a path. Enemies will need to clear the way with explosives or weapon fire. Though some special points can be blocked permanently, forcing enemies to take another longer detour (but not repeatable)

- destroying a bridge to a stream. enemies will have to cross the water which is a lot slower (permanent. not repeatable)

- hack a door to lock it. Enemies will need to unlock it via console. The time required is longer for normal troops, faster for "engineers. (repeatable, but require a successful hack attempt)

 

 

Additional idea: every once in a while, major reinforcements (in addition to normal reinforcements) will arrive placing a larger group of stronger enemies. (would be nice if it is open sky map and the troops are air-dropped in).

In the last livestream New Survival missions and Improved Spy missions were announced instead of raid and deception which sound like assault oriented missions with moving objectives and hordes of enemies.

I love defence missions , since it is the only kind of mission that you are able to go pug and have team cooperating at least for a bit, not rushing bs,

but this sounds like really good idea and would probably need good amount of coop play too,

if there is like 1000 enemies defending some spot

could be really fun to see kinda like riot style formed forces like shield lancers in line, heavy grineers behind them, snipers  at high spots,assault grineers jumping from everywhere

really sounds very interesting

The only reason I even consider defense is because it offers rewards I can't get elsewhere. (And it is the second best way to level gear as an added bonus.)

 

And just now got 1 less reason to do defense! Thunderbolt dropped.  \o/

IMO, don't do it!

 

I got so bored after I had nothing left to do.

 

You could try void, but with 4% drop rate on new keys and less of a drop rate on receivers, I thought it was too much of a lottery.

Nah.

 

I play because I want to. Just for fun.

I just want to have a way to get some of the stuff because I want it. Some of those are exclusive to defence and void.

The sooner I can stop doing that and get back to just playing for fun the better. (Although void is kinda fun once a while.)

 

Best way to have fun in something is: Keep your knowledge about it small, or simply don't care for it. (The last part is where most people fail. Me, I have no problem with it. ;)  )

Would this involve large-scale maps for the first suggestion on assault mission?
