Concepting how charge attacks and combo counter interactions could work

Hi!

I've been playing dauntless a fair bit recently and the way their axe charge mechanic works there could be used in melee 3.0 concerning charge attacks using up the combo counter.

How does it work in Dauntless?

In dauntless, charged strikes with your axe builds a special attack meter. Once full, you can expend the meter to unleash a highly damaging strike and gain a damage buff. You can stack this buff up to 3 times by filling up the meter and unleashing the charge attack. However, the higher the tier of damage buff, the faster the decay is-so you have to be really aggressive and be continuously landing charged hits to keep up your meter and refresh the buff.

How could it work in Warframe in the context of melee 3.0?

The devteam has talked about using up your combo meter to unleash a charge attack, resetting it to zero. Taking away scaling for the sake of one, slow attack isn't likely to be popular or very good.

Instead, we use the system illustrated above: Advancing your combo counter works like filling the special meter. Once full, you can buff your charge attack with it and unleash a powerful strike, and progress to the next tier with a damage buff. However the higher the damage buff, the faster the decay would be out of combat. Missing your charged heavy would reset the charge back to halfway to maximum.

Due to the nature of hordes and how melee works in warframe, this would benefit weapons better. You can even create playstyle differences by letting heavy weapons gain more meter from charged attacks and faster weapons gain meter through fast attacks, specific combos, etc. The special attacks themselves could also lend a fair bit of variety to weapon playstyles, being high range, high damage cleaves like the old galatine charge attacks, command grabs into custom finishers, AoE stuns, Forced debuffs, procs, etc.
