Preferred Hosting

My main peeve with this game is that a host may have laggy internet, which leads to a laggy game for everyone playing in that round. May I suggest some sort of preferred hosting style, in which a player can have either a test to check their internet or a simple checkbox in the option to become a preferred host? In this, a player who knows they have good internet can set themselves as a preferred host, and hopefully mediate some of the problems involved with a laggy player as a host. My apologies for the abstract idea. Any form of feedback, player or otherwise, would be nice to see about why this would or would not work.

That kind of thing would definitely be nice, however I see people who don't have a good connection using it anyways. As host they would almost never have connection issues themselves and not care about giving other people lag. I'm hoping with all the money DE is making off this game that they might actually get servers for hosting the non-solo games themselves. It would certainly improve game performance for everyone. I think if they want this game to be seen as a respected, quality online game deserving of having money tossed at it frequently, they should do this.

indeed they should host the games not us :/

Player hosting means lower operating costs to run the game, and if you can show me a mathematical model where having four people going through a fifth-party server results in lower latency than using peer-to-peer connections amongst themselves, I'll also purchase your perpetual motion machine.

Having an internet connection with decent bandwidth and low latency should be an "enlightened self-interest" sort of thing anyways, so stop bittorrenting porn while you play and everything should be fine.

I play this game like a single player game at this point.

It's pretty unplayable most of the time with the current hosting setup, unless I am playing with real life friends who live near me.

I see no reason for the current system other than the company was more worried about making money than providing a good service. In the end they are either going to have rent / buy servers or lose customers because people aren't going to put up with this forever. So really them worrying about a few bucks early is going to come back and bite them in the &#! if they wait too long.

Just the way I see it.

Enlightened self interest? You do know that internet speeds available and their prices vary from country to country right? Not all of us make enough money to have amazing internet. Not only that but it doesn't always matter how good someone's personal connection is if they live far away from the other people playing in the same game.

For the record, here in a America we have to 2-5 times the price of other countries and our internet is like 200 times slower than South Korea. There really isn't anything we can do unless the corporations here suddenly decide to stop being greedy buttflabs.

I know what the state of telecoms in the US is like, I work for an American ISP - in their abuse department, shutting down accounts for spam and spreading viruses. So trust me when I say this: you're almost certainly consuming more bandwidth than you think you are, and if you have a shared connection and anyone in the house who's not tech-savvy, you probably have at least one compromised PC.

Unless your internet connection's max throughput is 128kbps, you have enough bandwidth to host. If you're exceeding the minimum specs, you probably have enough CPU power to host. If you don't have either of those, then you're probably not running a system good enough to reliably contribute to your team and you're basically letting the team carry you, which is fine if you're in private groups with friends only.

(Also: warframe.com is hosted out of Serbia, so your latency to their host would suck if you're in the US on a crappy connection.)
