Depends on what you mean by progress. This game goes into a lot of depth. I'll edit this post a few times with some info.

In terms of Mastery Rank:

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Mastery_Rank

Mastery rank is obtained by leveling weapons.(Note, formaing weapons and re-leveling new copies of the same weapon to not count). For example, if you have a Karak, Karak Wraith, and a second Karak, Only one of the Karaks and the Karak Wraith will grant mastery EXP. After you 'master' a weapon, it counts towards your overall mastery of your account. This is one means of progression, as higher mastery rank will unlock more powerful weapons(for the moment, this is not true, however mastery rank requirements are going to be changed soon according to dev-streams). A few notable mastery ranks are: MR2: Unlocks Trading, Arch-Wing, and a few weapons. MR3: Unlocks Syndicates, and more weapons. All the way up to MR6 you'll unlock various weapons. All of the clan research/lab weapons are unlocked at MR12. As of right now, after MR12, the only thing you unlock is higher caps on certain things (Syndicates, Extractors, Daily Trades).

In terms of Skill/End Game:

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Focus   (Spoilers!)

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Trial

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Sortie

The Focus system is almost like a skill tree. Unlike modding, and frames unlocking your 1-4 abilities, your 5th ability is determined after you complete the second dream quest. Depending on which Tenno School you pick (Narmon, Vazarin, etc) you'll have different abilities to start and to branch to as you level your focus. Focus points are gained via a lens. You'll get one to start with whatever school you picked after the second dream quest, but more can be earned through sorties. Sorties are daily challenge missions. They vary anywhere from level 50-100 enemies and have different modifiers (only eximus units, only bows/snipers/melee/shotguns/etc allowed, enemies are resistant to elemental damage, etc). These missions only reward you once per day after you finish all three missions. The rewards typically include lenses, parts for a weapon or frame, cores(legendary, rare packs), and potatos(catalysts & reactors).

Trials are 'end-game' content level 'raids'. These missions can consist of anywhere from 4-8 players and have three parts. There are currently only two trials: the Law of Retribution Trial(nightmare/regular): http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/The_Law_of_Retribution   and the Jordas Verdict(nightmare/regular): http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/The_Jordas_Verdict     These raids require you to have specific team comps(specific frames for specific objectives) and a level of team work. They reward arcane enhancements. These arcane enhancements can be put on your warframe's helmet or syndana. There are four levels for each enhancement, improving the effect much like mods with fusion. To 'max' an arcane enhancement, you must have 10 of the respective enhancement on whichever cosmetic item you choose.

In terms of weapons and gear:

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Focus_Lens

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Forma

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Polarization

http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Polarity

There are various ways to maximize gear and its potential. Weapons and Warframes have a certain number of 'mod points' or capacity. When a weapon/frame is leveled to 30, the default point capacity is 30. After polarization it doubles the capacity of the weapon(this can be done at any level with your gear before or after forma).

With warframes, there are special mods called Auras(http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Aura). These can be used to boost your mod capacity. If you put an aura in a polarity that is the same as its own(see Polarity above) it doubles the boost the aura gives you. Auras can be obtained from alerts that appear randomly.

When you forma an item(weapon/frame/companion) it will allow you to place a polarity on a mod slot within this piece of gear. This polarity will half the mod cost when putting a mod with the same polarity into the slot you forma. Forma-ing a weapon is much like prestige. You reset the weapon to rank 0 to be leveled again while adding this slot. There is no limit on how many forma you can add to items, however, most items do not need more than 6 and only frames can benefit from more than 8(minimally, most frames only REQUIRE 2-5 forma depending on both the frame and the build you are aiming for).

Focus lenses are another means of 'maximizing' a weapon. They allow you to turn a portion of the affinity you would be gaining past level 30 into focus points. This allows you to continue progressing while still using your favorite weapon. There are many configurations and combinations of mods and polarities you can use on your gear. Explore other builds in the community, both by asking other players and even checking Warframe Builder(http://warframe-builder.com).

I hope my enormous wall of text is somewhat helpful. If I missed anything or if you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll answer any questions you have to the best of my knowledge.
