Another Complaint About Random Numbers

During a mobile defense mission i did today no energy orbs dropped for the bigger part of the "defend the artifact"-phase. A few dozen enemies killed, no orbs.

Luckily not very many enemies did spawn, maybe because it was a two man squad (or maybe the number of enemies is random as well?) so the mission was not lost.

(Although i did have a hell of a time finding my way to extraction, and the other guy did in fact quit the mission apparently in frustration. No way to know whether not finding your way is because the map is tricky, because the waypoint system is unhelpful/deceptive, or there simply is no path to extraction.)

Back on topic: should the ability to use certain skills depend on random chance?
