  1. Easier to relate to: Imagine there's a restaurant that sells hamburgers, and offers to add fries and a shake, as a meal deal.

The analogy is completely void because anything tangible has a cost to procure and produce, whereas digital goods are money forged from nothingness, with no additional effort on the part of the devs.  Steam sales, as discussed by Piell, myself, and others above, and the "Long Tail," mentioned by me above (particularly Chris Anderson's version of it in regards to digital sales) are the only real comparison.  Tr1ples1xer's comment above is hilarious if only because how ignorant he appears to be regarding the potential sales.

There is literally no better analogy for Darvo's Discount than the Steam Sales.  People fill up a Steam Wallet, people impulsively buy sale items, people run out of money, and the cycle repeats.  The "cost" per platinum, whether someone paid $0.01 per plat or $10 per plat is unimportant - the quicker people USE their plat, the quicker they must give DE more money.

edit: Llyssa, on the contrary, Steam is completely free to play, and not only that, but includes many free to play titles, including two owned by Valve themselves, Team Fortress 2 and DOTA2.  Clearly, a free platform and free games supported by microtransactions is completely viable and a valid comparison.

  2. Follow the Steam example - offering things at an offensively incredible discount (ie: 75% or 90% or whatever) goes well beyond "good deal" and into "impulse buy".  As someone who has spent nearly $100 real money on this game, and shamefully hordes his plat like it's a damned bank account, great % cuts (especially very temporary ones with a tantalizing pricetag - see: Steam dailies as an example) are highly incentivizing people like me to both buy in-game items and ultimately buy more platinum.  As a digital commodity, without overhead or production values, and as a PvE game, without serious primary focus on player vs player balance (ie: Where a player with X dollars and/or hours invested SHALL be X% better than those without), there is no reason not to hook as many people as possible with sales.  The more sales, the better.  The more varied the sales, the better.  The more tantalizing the sales, the better. The steam sales have already proven that once sale percentages start to reach record heights (ie: 75%+) that the total volume of sales exponentially oversteps the individual loss-in-revenue. so from a financial perspective, the "long tail" of selling is the target to aim for, especially in MMOs and F2Ps, where a large majority of players may be convinced that they "absolutely have to" spend money on Warframe if the sale is good enough to warrant money where they may otherwise grind whatever it is that was offered.

The only reason for both players and devs NOT to want Darvo's Discount to be as high as possible is if some misaligned sense of entitled selfishness says "I valued that item at X platinum points, and I refuse to allow people to achieve it for less."

  3. Just wanted to throw this feedback out to you guys:

This event is great!  It is different, engaging, and dynamic, with a nonstop enemy barrage and no annoying VIP / capsule to turtle up beside.  You've taken the most played mission mode (Defense, but realistically it's mostly played for rewards, not for gamemode) and turned it into a hyperaggressive slaughterfest.  Having an event that is FUN is a huge relief, compared to the "kill x whatzits" that events have been.  Furthermore, you've rewarded coordination and teamwork by allowing the highest tier rewards to be instantly available to well equipped teams, rather than force players to poopsock the same mission 40 times.

    Kudos!

  4. First of all, incredible thanks to DE for making Bladestorm both more awesome to watch and glitchproof.  It's amazing to not get stuck in walls anymore!

However, it feels really gimped to not be able to really max out the number of targets you can tackle, especially in higher level missions and/or really thick defense scenarios.  Nova's Null Star gains a "number of attacks" bonus from Constitution and Continuity, which makes sense, and I thought that it was a novel way of applying the +duration buffs to an ability that stems from a finite number of attacks rather than a time limit.  However, there are other abilities, such as Ash's Bladestorm and Ember's World on Fire that could equally benefit from equal treatment!

As an Ash aside, throw me in with the multitude of players that want to see Teleport go anywhere, rather than just behind an enemy, preferably with a smoke and/or stun radius, to make it something of a sneak attack sort of ability, rather than just a blind jump into extremely dangerous close quarters.

  5. Ash's teleport should just straight up let him teleport anywhere you point your courser (at least to a certain range), and not just to an enemy.

Ideally, I'd love to see teleport use the smokebomb effect as well to cause a stun.  Teleporting into/near/around enemies should be advantageous, not leave you incredibly exposed!

  6. So here's a curious one.  I'm running a dual monitor setup on Windows 7x64 via a 9800GTX+ (if any of that matters), and if fullscreen Warframe loses focus for any reason (popup from GMail and/or Twitter notification, for example, or if I alt-tab to check the Warframe wikia), then the keyboard becomes screwed up, but only when I input text (so, for example, trying to type "sup" becomes "ogl", but w for forward still works as intended).  The transplanted letters are always the same, which is why I know that "sup" becomes "ogl", or "ty" before "yf".  It has no bearing on gameplay, as keybinds for non-text actions work just fine, but the issue even extends to the steam overlay, so being in a Shft-Tabbed steamgroup chat could be affected.  Of course, alt-tabbing to that textchat works just fine, so it's like the error in when it goes through Warframe.

What's more annoying is that it isn't guaranteed to mess up, which leads to moments when I feel like rolling the dice on textbuggery to check the wiki or my email.

  7. Certainly a common theme in these forums is a concern for longevity and variety. With only three races, and rooms that appear to be functionally identical, the game can get a little repetitive. Now that I've clocked in enough hours to reach a combined warframe level of 60ish (a pittance, I know, but enough time to get a feel for the game), I've noticed that one thing that I really miss is enemy variety. I enjoy fighting the Corpus UAV drones, the infected crawlers, the shield Grineers, and duking it out with Jackal / Hyena, because they are the enemies that progress beyond the identically two-legged humanoids. Every other enemy is basically in front of you to be a bullet sponge, but those enemies add dimensional variety (while cameras and turrets technically meet the criteria for variety, they annoy and aggravate for other reasons not mentioned here).

So why not more of a good thing? Grineers could have assassins in the "vents" (after all, you can fit in those things) ; Infected could have crawlers growing on the walls as static objects ; Corpus could heavily armored mechs in their loading bays. And don't stop there - think of the bosses! Instead of generic mobs with more hitpoints, why aren't the Grineer using mobile weapons platforms / tanks in those docking bays, or the Corpus attempting to build even more hilarious monster mechs like dragons and spiders?! And the opportunity to have rogue AIs, pulsating hives, and 20' experimental robots shouldn't go unnoticed.

Give some variety to those thousands of enemies we cut down, and let them die in a form other than 6' tall, 2 hands and 2 legs!

And while I'm randomly dreaming big, let's get that Field of View slider in there as well!

  8. Actually, I never said that it was inconvenient. I actually said that people that don't purchase slots literally play less of a game than those that purchase arbitrary "slots". Additionally, as Ryme pointed out as well, multi-stage blueprints may very well be offlimits to those that don't purchase additional slots. If this is a design choice, that's fine, but you can't just say "DON'T BE ENTITLED YOU MOOCH THIS IS A BETA" as a smokescreen when I already acknowledged the value and incentive of exclusive purchasable rights vis-à-vis aesthetic customization.

  9. First off, let me congratulate the devs on their choice of the reactor/catalyst mechanism for upgrading warframes and weapons. It's a nice way to allow both F2P and P2P gamers to enjoy the system, and, logically, there is an immediate advantage to those willing to pony up for it rather than grind away. So, kudos.

However, I am curious if the "slots" concept is going to see a similar avenue of thought - currently, there is a surprisingly stunted experience for players not willing to pony up real cash, with no alternative mechanism for that same experience (except, supposedly, multiple account farming, which is probably something undesirable). Is there an intent to expand the size of our slot inventory through either a pure credit purchase or a creatively rare blueprint? I'm aware that there has to be some exclusive incentive for using real money, and I have already put my money where my mouth is with the expanded colour palette (and indeed, it appears as if you have a future intent for custom skins, probably seasonally and whatnot, that will most certainly be cash-only).

Additionally, on a more practical level, it does seem rather counter-intuitive to have a beta, where the purpose is to stress-test the bugs away by as large an audience as possible, and then design a system wherein a subsection of your members will never be able to test more than 2 warframes or a fraction of the available weapons.

  10. I apologize if it seems that everything useful comes only from alerts. The truth is that it's just a few cool items.

I can completely and totally understand orokin reactors and catalysts being from alerts. After all, there has to be an incentive to pay and give you guys money. But having rare blueprints in that same incredibly limited pool is a rough one. Why not just have ithe weapons be scattered as blueprint drop #4 from some of the bosses?

  11. It's awesome that you made a non-paid way to upgrade warframes and weapons to "Pro". Fantastic! Now all I'm hoping for is that slots (for storing more warframes and weapons) also have a non-paid alternative option!

(and if you ever ever ever think of player-to-player sales and trading of gear, please make sure it is in a auciton-house or store style where deals can be available even when you're offline, so that people don't have to constantly lurk online and shout nonstop in a trade channel)

  12. Keeping on the "space is pretty" theme, let's go with something more ... stoically impressive.

A walker taking a silent vigil against the vastness of space:

    Zj1FQ.jpg

Some of my attempts looked much better, including a corpsman staring at a moon, but it's REALLY hard to time the screencap while training them at the end of a mission. Still, a quiet sort of watchman for the robot race.

  13. The reality is that 123456 (or some simple variant thereof) is the most commonly used password around - people take easy suggestions because they can. Because of this, social engineering and guesswork is really all casual hackers use to these days to catch an account. Any mechanism that allows the laziness of people (and yes, we are all lazy at some point) to be exploited is poor planning. The amount of coding time it would take to change the example to randomized is non-trivial, sure, but you've stopped up a potential griefpoint later.

No one "deserves" to have an account stolen just because they are lazy. By that logic, the first time you forget to lock your house, it should be completely looted.

  14. I know that this might seem trivial, but on the Account Management page, it gives a suggestion for a "long and strong" password. I refreshed the page a few times to test it, and I confirmed that it's not randomly generated upon pageload. Is it unique to my account? If Warframe takes off, I could foresee a large amount of (albeit careless) people using that generic suggestion and then getting account fished if everyone has the same recommended password, especially if things like trading or gifting eventually make it into the game.

Wouldn't it be more secure to spend an hour coding up a little randomizer for that suggestion, rather than deal with some serious potential headaches down the road?

  15. Has full gamepad support been enabled yet? I mean like a press-to-talk button on the 360 gamepad and the hacking game and even out-of-game menus. I love sitting back on the couch and playing games through Big Picture mode, but I haven't heard much about completing the compatibility of the gamepad past this thread.
