it seems intermittent for me.. does it have something to do with the strict nat thing?

Must have been something like that. At least for me. My chat was totally broken after U7 but started to work perfectly when I connected my computer directly and not trough router.

Just press your profile in the upper left in basic view and then the empty avatar slot. It'll say "Change Avatar Image" when you hover mouse over. Then just select the wanted avatar.

Edit: Or just press the avatar slot directly. Just noticed myself.
