Doing more damage - Mods. Mods are the backbone of your ability to make numbers go up. An upgraded mod carries far more weight in power than a handful of unupgraded mods. Mods take up capacity though, especially as they are upgraded.
To upgrade mods, you need Endo and Credits. Endo comes in a trickle from liquidating mods, and you can occasionally find Ayatan Sculptures or Stars. Slotting Stars into a Sculpture will increase the Endo value you get when you give it to Maroo to liquidate. Maroo also offers a weekly quest (resetting every Sunday rollover) to grab her a sculpture.
Credits can be had from running Dark Sector missions, doing Sorties, and the Index. Often an easy way to collect credits is to get enough of a fund to pay for a medium or high stakes Index, winning a round, and cashing in. Do this if you have buddies willing to help you with that. Having a credit booster (either buying it, or getting one as a login reward) helps too.
What Mods are good? - +Multishot, +Damage. Prioritize Elemental damage mods over Slash/Puncture/Impact mods.
If your weapon's critical profile is good, slot critical mods. If it's a beam weapon, consider Range. Consider Fire Rate/Attack Speed if your weapon is a bow or slow. Combo Duration if using melee. Punchthrough is good on most guns, but expensive to slot. "Hybrid" mods (with more than one stat) tend to be less expensive.
(Yes, there are circumstances where IPS mods have a use, and Punchthrough detrimental, but that's more advanced content to cover once you have a grasp of what makes you Shoot Good.)
As for frames, it depends on the frame you are using, and what you want to do with the frame.
What weapons to use? - What's your MR?

Warframe has been pretty tough for me lately so I'm asking for a trainer. I'll say probably at least MR 10 but anyone is welcome. Things I need help with: Doing more damage, learing what's good and not, what mods to use. And what weapons to use (including amps)
