Redeemer affinity issue

I apologize in advance if this is doesn't belong in performance section, but I didn't see any dedicated weapons section. Redeemer does not seem to be providing affinity when using the fire attacks, only when doing actual melee attacks.

I am not a vet so I may be misunderstanding the mechanics a bit, but today, I took the weapon to Earth, Coba to maybe level it a bit. I started at level 3 and very soon I noticed the bar wasn't filling unless I did melee attacks. It was the only weapon I was using other than my kubrow and abilities. I went up to wave 10 and when I extracted, I had farmed 5k + 5k yellow affinity, pushing me just to level 5. No significant amount of affinity went into primary or secondary weapon.
