We Can No Longer Do Melee Except Straight Ahead

Previously, in the Controls options, you could set directional melee so that you can press WASD with melee key and do directional melee, regardless of the camera direction. Very handy in crowded fights.

 

That's gone now, and you are always meleeing in the direction of your crosshairs. Why remove it?

 

By the way, I see there's a new "melee assist" toggle, but if I toggle it on and off I can't see any difference in meleeing. What does it do?

I don't honestly think it does anything. However, it might make your melee attacks slightly  auto-aim towards the target.

 

So without melee assist, your melee attacks would only go straight. With it, you might slightly melee towards the target if your crosshair isn't exactly on him.
