Linking Account To Steam

If I link my account to Steam, will I only be able to use Steam from then on to access the game, or will I still be able to use the regular launcher, free of Steam? I'm asking this because for Spiral Knights, when you linked your account to Steam, you could only use Steam to open the game.

All it does is download the client again and when you launch from steam its the exact same except now you can use the steam overlay. you can still launch the game via the original launcher.

Both the Steam version and the standalone launcher access the same server side information, the Steam version is more capable of using the stam overlay though.
