How Do I Use Madurai Focus? [Spoiler]

OK so I have the Madurai Focus, it said on the thingy "unleash destructive beam that kills all the things" (paraphrasing).

 

I go into mission, the thingy is fully charged and I press 5 and...

 

My warframe shuts down, the tenno hovers above it with angelic wings and I get to float around a little before it's over

 

So it looks cool but it didn't actually do anything. What am I not getting? This was a very laggy squad (I don't know why I was put into a 1500ms+ squad when my ping limit is 100ms), might that have been the problem?

Did you try clicking fire?

The lazer is a constant fire, just hover the crosshair over enemies and watch them melt. Note that its range is fairly short, 20m.

It was the lag that was causing the problem, works fine normally.
