What exactly do I have to do with the Acolytes?

I get them to spawn, do a liiiiittle damage to them, and at some point they leave and Alad remarks something about them "making us do this the hard way". They drop nothing after this and my "acolyte confrontations" counter is still at 0 after 2 encounters. Am I doing something wrong?

you have to deal 50k damage to make them flee, and they will drop (guarantee) one of the new mods

I don't know how much damage I did, but I certainly didn't die. They just left. Can they leave before I deal enough damage?

Yes, there's a time limit(but I don't know it) in which you have to deal damage or they will just disappear and will not drop a mod. Happened to me once.
