Simple Question About Melee.

A disgusting and pitiful noob here. Couldn't find an answer to this (it's probably such a known thing at this point), not in the game codex and not via quick forum search, so here goes.

 

Sometimes I can do a "melee smash", when I hold the attack button after jumping. My character smashes the ground, you know what I'm talking about.

 

...and sometimes I can't do it, my guy just jumps and swings his sword normally. I wonder what's the reason? Is there a stamina meter of some sorts, and if so, is it invisible? I couldn't find anything on the screen that would indicate stamina. This doesn't seem like a bug, it seems like it's a part of some game mechanic I still don't understand.

There's a kinda dividing line on the horizon. If you melee while airborn while facing downwards at the right angle you melee smash, anything higher than that angle, and you perform an air-melee attack.

No, no stamina, they thankfully removed that from the game. 

 

You have to aim at the ground in order to do a ground slam
