Let's say my shotgun has 55% crit chance, is it each pellets that has 55% chance to crit?

As a result of this, shotguns have a shallower crit bonus curve than most weapons.  You're more likely to get at least one crit out of each blast, since you're firing so many rounds at once, but each crit represents a smaller percentage of the overall damage, and it's very unlikely (unless your crit chance is 90%+) that all of the shots from any blast will crit.

Shotguns get more consistent bonuses from high-but-not-perfect crit chance, but don't typically gain as much on any given shot.  It averages out about the same as other weapons over a larger sample size, however.  Just something to keep in the back of your mind when gauging the damage output of a given shotgun.
