Max stares at mav blankly. "Xeno means strange, not alien. Besides, this planet isn't Terra.  It's Chicken."  Max blinked, then walked to the mouth of the cave, staring out at the rain. He listened to the drops, smelling the water, etc.

Everything seems normal until about twenty yards out. There is a void in the world. A spot where there is no scent, no sound of rain falling. And it is moving towards you.

“Projecting energies is one of the answers indeed. Although, your figure of speech mentioning pain is a subject of the Vazarin study. But back to the topic. Madurai is perhaps the most flexible in its practical usages school. Even the oldest practitioners don't know the full spectrum of usages the Madurai has, discovering more and more new ways over time. You see, energy is a perfectly flexible subject for manipulation and shaping. As a proficient sculptor molds his material into the shapes that he needs to achieve, you would be able to shape interior and exterior powers to fit your particular tasks. But, as it always happens, you will have to understand the depths and, figuratively speaking, let the subject of your study through your bones before you will be able to bend it to your will.

In order to do so, the first thing you will need to do is to comprehend your personal process of energy accumulation and conversion. As I said earlier, each one of you has a different heart and the power of will, so the answer “how” would be somewhat unique for each one of you. Sure, later, when you master your “emitting device”, you will learn of the Madurai styles like the “Rising storm”, “Persistent gale”, and “Sweeping whirl”. But again – you need to discover how smoothly can you process energies, in what quantities you can accumulate them, what is your borderline capacity and the marginal control ability, and at what useful rate can you convert the powers”

He made a slight distance from the audience, approaching the simulation terminal before continuing.

“But once you learn yourself, the learning of the true art begins. You will be able not only to project energy, but to use it to empower your movements via channeling it through yourself, to channel it through your weapons or other objects, to infuse surroundings with it, to alter, riposte, and absorb the surrounding energies, and even to influence the mental state of your own and of those around you”

He summoned a corrupt grineer bombard projection. He approached it non-hastily but confidently, his arms began to emit barely noticeable tendrils of fire as he grappled the projections by its head with his one hand and forcefully struck it in the chest with the other one, which resulted in projection’s core detaching from its grappled head and flying backwards for a second before dissipation.

“Learn the ways in which force flows through your body and you will become able to channel it through yourself. Yet, remember that everything has its limits for a number of reasons, including safety”

He approached the terminal again and summoned two more corrupt bombards projections.  He struck them with his greatsword swiftly and with the use of force. The first strike landed the projection’s head, emitted a noticeable shockwave, and pinned the projection down with the explosively-crushing force as if it has been struck with a warhammer. Almost in an instant, the second projection was pierced through with a swift jab upon reversion, as if the greatsword was a spear.

“Same goes for weaponry: learn the discipline of the weight center operating along with the principles in which your weapon of choice delivers its force and you will discover a whole new variety of methods of how to channel all sorts of force through your tools, regardless if it would be thermal,” on that mention, his greatsword engulfed in intense flames, “or a physical one”. The greatsword extinguished once again shortly after while he added “But remember that each tool excels in its unique way”

He summoned two more corrupt bombards projections for even more acts of demonstration. He made two swift and strong swings with his hands, which, however, did not contact the targets directly. Before anyone could wonder “what was that for?” one of the projections half-turned, exposing a neatly-pierced hole in its chest before falling to the floor and dissipating, while the other one had stood a bit longer before several intense streams of virtual blood showed themselves up from under the projection's armor before it collapsed.

“Let the moving powers of the universe – the sounds of its grinding gears and directing axles – resonate in your body, and you will learn how to bend the raw and primordial physical force. Once you do, you will start to see all things material from absolutely different angle, understanding the principles of integrity and so being able to overcome any defenses”

He stood in front of the audience and began to form a bright sphere of scorching light in front of him; the room temperature jumped up and the ayatan sculptures speeded up their motions at least thrice, causing some of them to fall to the sides; the air went terribly dry. But before the orb became a serious threat, he slowly reduced it to the sizes of a small and burning ball bearing, which he put in his hand and displayed to the audience as if it was a blazing pearl.

“The thermal energy manipulation is the calling card of the Madurai practice due to its flamboyance. Most people imagine that Madurai is all about flashing beams of heat and causing explosions, but today you have seen that it isn’t entirely so: bending thermal forces is an essential part of the path but not all of what practitioners are capable of. In any case, if you would ever try to command fire, remember the core rules I told you earlier and that fire is not a force you should be toying with unless you want to get yourself burned”

After that statement, he formed his palm in a fist, “crushing” the “burning pearl”. In a couple of moments, all who were in the audience began to feel oddly: their hands felt like they were filled with molten steel, their lungs grew pressed and filled with fire, their sight narrowed and their heartbeat intensified. For a short moment, the audience felt itself like soldiers who are about to throw themselves into a vicious bayonet charge. Before the feeling became overwhelming, it began to fade as suddenly as it came.

“The power flows not only beyond but also within each one of us. We are all parts of it; all of us can sense its flow, flood, or absence. Madurai is conceived from the most intense emotions, and so it is capable of affecting your heart in return. Learn and master your passions, feel the highs and the lows of your potence, develop trust in your capabilities but also know your limits, learn to overcome and to blaze anew if you were extinguished, strike the sparks of experience that form each time you collide your heart against the hardships on your way and you will learn how to keep your and others inner flames burning”

He lowered his hands and gave the audience some time to recover one’s breath.

“Now, when you had your share of show and we touched the topic of interacting, who of you can mention at least three interactions of Madurai path with the other schools?”

No one has an answer.

Tony is fiddling with his fingers, sparks jumping between them. He seem to be trying to emulate the formation of the orb.

An instant wave of heat spread across the room, making the ayatans react by a momentary flash of lights and the following deactivation. The room has been temporarily drained of energy on a purpose.

“You will have respect for the safety of those surrounding you and practice only when they will be secured from your upcoming mistakes,” Siger said to Tony, who obviously wasn’t thinking clearly at the moment, “you do not want to bask in even greater regret”

“Now, back to the interactions,” the heavy said while returning his attention to the audience and his tone became more storytelling again.

“Variety is one of the core requirements of progress, in both metaphoric and practice senses. One ancient general once said that “Order beats class”. It can be treated as the statement that a number of system elements in harmony are more durable, active, and generally viable than a monolithic system with no diversity. Applied to the teaching of the ways, it means that a scholar must know the balance, know their place in this system, and know the ways in which he and other involved in the system interact with each other.

Yes, some of you are now willing to ask if it is possible to master a path without getting involved in interactions with others, and the answer is no. Each element exists only because there is an element that begets it, an element that is begotten by it, and the element that controls it. Same goes for any part of the system, as well as for pathways practitioners. Since explaining the whole model of balance will take a couple of lectures, I will explain you the simple draft from the Madurai standpoint.

There are four types of interactions between paths: the generation sequence and the control pentagram are the two harmonic cycles; the overcoming sequence and the insult pentagram are the cycles of imbalance and chaos. Your goal as a scholar and practitioner will be to endorse and maintain the balance; the two latter are the unwritten taboo that comes with a price for those who dare to violate it and for the realm as a whole. The generation sequence is considered to be the representation of the whole cyclic model.

Like a stereotypic young disciple,  The balance sequence starts from the Naramon school – also known as the path of wood. Naramon is the path of the new yang - the path of the rising sun - which takes focus on expanding via the methods of learning and comprehension. The attributes of the Naramon school are the childhood period of life, emotions of unquenchable curiosity, idealism, bravery, but also anger, the green color, trees, springtime, and blossoming in general. Naramon practitioners seek to expand their knowledge of the surrounding existence. They study, scheme, and generate concepts. Naramon is the art of possible directions, while Madurai is the art of actions that make those concepts a part of reality.  Same as fire borns from wood, Naramon directs and fuels Madurai. It is a path deeply respected by Madurai, and so you will have to develop your respect to them should you commit to Madurai. Same works on the individual level: naramoners won’t likely let you get extinguished and would benefit you with their ideas and insights instead, providing a reason and direction. Cherish them and their path.

Madurai is the second phase of the cycle. Since we have talked about it in more detail, I would refrain from repeating what has been told already yet remind you that Fire burns everything down to ashes from which the land and so the new status quo takes its birth. On the individual level, treat your path comrades as your siblings, regardless older or younger they are compared to you. Fire has an astonishing capability for synergy, making two fused flames more potent than each one of them separated. The great flame is more resistant to cold and humidity, but it also needs more fuel. Respect and cooperate with your brethren in your shared pursuit of pushing the universe to its renovated state and the new balance.

The Unairu path – the way of land, surface, and stability is associated with adulthood, centrism, balance, qualities like patience and honesty, emotions like trust but also anxiety and stubbornness, yellow color, and the heartland. As a mediating path, Unairu seeks to draw all elements together, to bring harmony among them, and to build substantial stability. Unairu practitioners are defenders of the realm that has been established by more proactive paths practitioners. Land is born from fire and any planet needs the fiery heart in order to be alive. Should you become a flame, respect and aid Unairu practitioners like progenitors treat their children. Assist them for they need your dynamism in the same way fire needs wood, and don’t you ever overcome them, for you will burn your legacy in that case.

Metal borns in the depths of land, and so Zenurik descends from Unairu. Zenurik is the path of a rising moon – new yin – and associated with old age, autumn, white color, mental qualities like intelligence and clarity, emotions like grief and sadness, metals (classically) and the void (currently). The core principles of Zenurik are control, manipulation, and profiting. Allegorically speaking, when Naramon is a path of a disciple, Madurai is a way of a warrior, Unairu is a way of a commoner, Zenirik is a way of an administrator. However, as fire melts iron, Madurai controls Zenurik. Rulers manipulate operate with powers, but warriors are the source of raw power, without which a rule loses its viability. Madurai operates with sources when Zenurik operates with shapes. When there is too much manipulation in the realm, the flow of the cycle slows down and the decay happens. Your mission as a Madurai scholar would be to judge and to reduce Zenurik when necessary via separating manipulators from the metarials of their manipulations. You will have to treat Zenurik practitioners as subjects of supervision and judgment but you will also have to remain respectful toward them.

Just as metal collects and streams water, Vazarin – the last phase of the cycle – is born from Zenurik. Vazarin is the full yin – the full moon – path that is associated with winter, metamorphosis, death, and rebirth, qualities like gentleness and spontaneity, emotions like calmness but also fear, femininity, flexibility, black or less frequently blue color, water tides, and aquatic bodies. Vazarin is the path of life, death, and renewal. Vazarin studies life and its processes; it stands for renovation and peace. It stops the completed cycles and opens new ones whenever waters nourish the seeds of new trees. Vazarin gives birth to Naramon but it also limits Madurai whenever the cycle has to end. That’s right – these often tender and gentle scholars are the ones who limit and pacify redoubtable Madurai followers whenever their efforts are in excess or when they have accomplished their mission but still refuse to tone down. One ancient poet made an allegory, depicting the Vazarin path as a calm priestess who puts a tired Madurai warrior to rest. Remember that, and never transgress them, for they are able of redirecting all of your terrifying might against yourselves. Must confess that I don’t know much about Vazarin path in details, which makes it especially interesting, mysterious, and also respected from my point of view. If you ever become a Madurai disciple, it would be better for you to treat Vazarin in the same way.

And don’t forget – when following paths, you are not and will never be alone, so it is better to get used to it rather sooner than later”

After that ending phrase, he proceeded to conclusions, “On that note, I consider your Madurai introduction lecture finished. But before you would proceed to speaking your questions to me, which I hope you do have plenty, I will ask you for the last time: who of you, after listening to all I had to tell you, considers themselves fully ready and willing to pursue the Madurai path, realizing the limititations, responsibilities, and opportunities that may lie ahead of you?”

Tiny does not drop st first, another set of sparks sliding between his fingers. Then the girl next to him puts her hand on his arm, pushing it down, and he stops. Still as he looks at you you can almost see the gears turning,

It happens again when you talk of Vazarin. Though that time he has the oookg of someone who has been told that while he has a knife, someone else has a gun.

Both stand.

Seth turns to look at Tony, who meets his gaze with a wry smile.

"It. Appears. We. Are. To. Be. Comrades." He says.

"Not to a backstabbing traitor like yourself!" Tony snaps.

Tony's hand twitches and the energy in the room fluctuates imperceptibly. Then the girl from before touches his ankle and he instead folds his hands and bows.

"So. Be. It." He says. "Brother."

He turns and departs the room. Seth looks rather pleased with himself.
