Unable to build ascending elevator in dojo

I've searched online for a tutorial but it doesn't seem to have one, I can't get the elevator to go up instead of down. There is a >> button before building u can click and it turns the room outline blue, I have tried that but the arrow still points down instead of up.

How do you build ascending elevators?

If I remember correctly, there's a limit on the number of floors you can have.  Don't quote me on that, though.

I've destroyed all floors, it's just the main dojo.

The default should be up, the blue outline means down. Did you try building the elevator with the default setting (white) and it didn't come out right...or are you just befuddled by the confusing UI and didn't accept?

both. I tried building and when I didn't see the up arrow I didn't want to try it. I then built both white and blue, they for whatever reason both went down. I ended up building more things and then tried again, and for whatever reason, it worked.
