(If you haven't seen Rogue One the end of this new film meets up directly with the beginning of A New Hope, with Vader looking for R2-D2 and plans for the deathstar. The empire knows that they show some sort of weakness, but they don't have the particulars.) You know the famous handful of scenes where the storm troopers can't hit the broad side of a barn as the good guys escape? They weren't supposed to! Leia had lied to the empire about the location of a rebel base and they knew it, so the they put a homing device on the Millennium Falcon and were allowing them to escape. Luke and Obi-Wan screwed the whole thing up. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself so they could escape, not realizing they were being allowed to go. After seeing Obi-Wan die Luke froze in the open so the storm troopers had to "miss" as they were under orders to let them all escape. Then he starts taking shots back at them. Then they fight the patrolling ships instead of running... There's a little scene where Vader and Tarkin briefly discuss this after the good guys get away, and then the movie cuts to the cockpit and Leia immediately calls Han out on the same thing, saying the only explanation for what had happened was that they'd been allowed to escape and the empire must be tracking them... Not really sure why they continued on to the rebel base anyway. Or why the empire flew the deathstar directly at the base and rebel fleet knowing they now have the plans showing some unknown critical weakness, instead of letting the empire's fleet go out and meet them first... <.< /nerd mode off.
