Controlls not responding; Abilities already in use. And operator switch takes a while.

So i jumped into a Hydron defense mission and everything was fine until around wave 4. I got 1.4k ms lag between me and the host and i thought it was very strange for this to keep going for so long. The menu and controlls where very slow to respond. My network settings ingame are set to default so i should not be queued up with a host with more than 300ping. Are there ways to avoid this kind of situation? (Other than force quitting the game of course.)
