Good morning!

I was referred to this game by a friend, and I'm very impressed! I love the FPS gameplay combined with the PvE content...and the art style is amazing. It reminds me of The Guyver, one of my favorite old Manga.

My questions:

-I make it a point to put down $20 or so on F2P games that provide me with lengthy entertainment. It's only fair, and I'm an adult with disposable income. With that said, I would like to buy a Warframe to play alongside my Excalibur. I'm lame, in that I choose characters/races/classes based on appearance and not power, so I've narrowed it down to two: Ash or Nekros

As a newbie, which of those Warframes do you suggest?

Second question:

-I'm a lvl 13 Excalibur right now, and I'm struggling to feel effective on the Venus system...which is only lvl 5-10. My starter weapons are at lvl 12 or so, and I have Mods attached to max out the slots. Still, it feels like I'm doing tiny amounts of damage.  I'm at work, but my mods are:

Torso: lvl 6 Vitality, lvl 4 shield recharge, Slash Dash, Radial Blind.

Rifle: lvl 6 Crit Chance, lvl 5 Add Fire.

Sword: lvl 6 Add Melee Damage, lvl 5 Reach.

I've got about 320 HP and 180 Shield, and my sword does about 50 and my rifle does about 30 vs Venus mobs. I thought I was doing ok...what am I doing wrong? I've read the beginner guides, and that got me to where I am.

Finally question:

-Any suggestions are beginner friendly weaponry? All the guides suggest "Corsos" (the big axe), shotgun, and throwing knives...are these solid weapons to aim for?

Thanks, folks! I hope to see you in game!

Ash, definitely. But hunt that. And try Rhino. He rocks. Ash is pretty easy to get, but Nekros is way harder. If you had to choose between either, buying Nekros then hunting Ash is the most cost-effective way to go!

Okay, time for some add-on: For Warframes, it depends on your style. I personally love Loki, and I think Rhino's an amazing beginner frame. Very forgiving. You can also try Frost, great for defensive missions, especially if you solo a lot. He's got a skill which blocks out in-coming fire from outside his dome-shaped power.

Since you're in Venus, you should be fighting Corpus. You may want to find Impact and Puncture weapons or mods soon, or Cold and Electric mods. They're more effective against Corpus. If it's a Braton, it should handle pretty well against all factions, but Serration and damage-enhancing mods are going to be a must soon.

That sort of weapon damage is pretty okay, I think, for a beginner with almost no mods. If you travel in a Tenno Cell, four people, even beginners, will be more than enough to over-power any enemy. If you're concerned about solo-gaming, definitely hunt Serration mods ASAP. What side-arm are you using, by the way?

So, for beginner-friendly weapons: Braton, definitely. The MK1-Braton will be out-performed by the faster-firing, higher damage Braton. Scindo is the axe, I think, but Cronus is the sword you get from Vor. Pretty good stuff. As Damage 2.0 just rolled around, I suggest finding weapons which specialise in all the damage areas: Impact, Puncture and Slash.

Primary:

Braton: Excellent all-rounder (Close range, mid range, long range, balanced damage type)

Burston: Ammo efficient, requires more skill, and also a great all-rounder. This and the above go good with any side arm, really.

Latron: Semi-auto, high-puncture weapon. Good for sniping, but pretty hard to use. Pair with Bronco for close quarters.

Strun: Starting shotgun, excellent start.

Secondary:

Hikou/Kunai: Good accompaniment to the shotties, as they deal high puncture damage. Good with any primary, but long-range targets require more skill to shoot. Or you can just switch to your primary and hit-scan weapon.

Aklato: A good all-round weapon. High capacity, medium damage. A pain to spam.

Lex: A hard-to-use weapon, with super high puncture damage and low fire rate. It's basically the sniper rifle of hand guns. Great with shotties.

Bronco: Side-arm shotgun. High Impact. Pair with Burston or Latron

Sicarus: My favorite. Burst firing side-arm. High impact damage. Good with the Latron.

Vasto: High slashing damage. Good with shotties and Burston.

(Extra: Dual Vipers: Good weapon to aim for. Ridiculously high DPS, but it eats ammo like nuts and it's hard to make.)

You can check the above link out for the larger range, but I believe the above are the easier ones to cope with.

My suggestion?

Long range: Latron/Braton, Sicarus/Bronco, Scindo/Dual Heat Swords.   <---Good all round build you can face many enemy types with.

Mid range: Burston, Lex/Sicarus/Bronco, Kestrel <---Good mid-range fighting capability. Kestrel is a thrown melee weapon. You'll learn more about its use as you play, but you can throw it, then reload.

Close Range: Strun, Sicarus/Lex/Aklato, Dual heat swords/Any slashing weapon.  <---Good against Corpus!

... Hope it ain't too wordy. The advice can be improved on, but I'll leave that to someone with more experience to correct! I'm no pro myself!

Nekros is more fun for me, but he's soft, and best in teams.

I'd suggest replacing your starter braton with the 'stronger' version of it from the shop soon, that one is much better.  It can be tough to start out!

Throwing knives hold up very well.  I personally find the Scindo axe to be too slow to level.

Nekros for more support role, Ash for more of a lone wolf role. Or coop-oriented versus solo-oriented. I would strongly encourage farming for them rather than buying them with plat, unless time is of a concern. In which case, just buy them.

Reason you're feeling ineffective is that the "start game" is weird, especially now with damage 2.0. Without some very essential mods, vitatliy, redirection, focus/streamline/stretch/flow, weapon damage/multishot, you'll feel very very weak. I would suggest grinding on Mercury until at least rank 20, and getting your first set of good gear (once you dispose of mk1, skana, and lato). Realize you'll need to change mod loadouts depending on the faction you're facing, specifically the elemental mods.

Mods to look out for and to put on before all else:

- Serration and Multishot for primary and secondary.

- Base Damage and base speed boost for melee.

- Vitatily or Redirection.

- Some combination of passive warframe power mods (stretch, flow, focus, etc).

One purchase you may want to make first is an Orokin reactor for your Excalibur frame, and maybe a new primary/secondary. The starting gear has gotten a soft buff of sorts with the new Damage model, but they are still rather lackluster compared to other primaries.

If you want, get the normal Braton (not the Mk-1) and a new pistol.

Between Ash and Neckros: Ash will feel beefier, and Neckros is a bit more of a caster.

Thanks for all the feedback, folks!

I vacillated between Nekros, Ash, and Saryn (I really like poison-themed characters), and ultimately purchased Nekros last night because he looks so cool. I found the "Warframe Crash Course" videos really helpful in seeing how characters look and feel during play.

I saved up credits and purchased the starter shotgun and the Lex.  Holy crap, what a difference! Even at unranked, both weapons do triple the damage of my starter rifle/pistol. I also took someone's advice and played Mercury Survival/Defense until level 20. I must not understand the difficulty levels of the different missions, because I still died on occasion as a level 20 playing past 15 minutes on Mercury Survival...but whatever, it's fun.

I also looked at the cheat sheet to identify how I should mod my weapons based on faction. I think I get it...slash vs infected, blunt vs robots, thrust vs grineer. I'm still trying to get a hang on the different elements...I had my weapon modded a certain way for Mercury that worked, but I did little to no damage on the winter robots in Venus.  I'll figure it out eventually.

Nekros is fun, and I'm particular fond of Soul Punch, Desecrate, and Army of Shadows. My team mates love me when I spawn dozens of health orbs after a survival wave, and Army of Shadows is rad when I decide to solo or take on a wave by myself.

Oh, a man after my own heart! I do the same (choosing based on appearance), my friend, and it's payed off so far, never really payed much attention to the "technical" stuff but I do pretty well. :> Anyway, I say don't worry too much about complicated stuff, you'll have tons of fun anyway. Welcome and enjoy your stay! :>
