Let's All Fix My Computer

No porn jokes please. So about a week ago my PC seemed to change over night, it's now incredibly slow, web pages won't load, there's tons of lag, task manager says I have about 14 tabs open when I only have 2 and I have bloody pop-ups and adverts EVERYWHERE literally covering the whole damn screen. Some of them I can close others I can't but as soon as I do more appear. About the the most dodgy thing I do online is watch tv shows.... You can pick up viruses and stuff from these things but I've never experienced anything bad in all the years I've done this.

I really can't afford a proper Norton 1 year paid protection shindig.... I have AVG Free, some free anti-malware thing and a pop-up blocker that just seems to turn adverts transparent without actually getting rid of them.... Any suggestions? I'm a nerd and a gamer but I'm honestly pretty awful with computers outside of gaming...

 SpyBot Search and Destroy

Only thing I have and never got a thing. Well, but I don't get into weird places either...

It can get rid of most spyware and crappy things like that, it can protect further attempts to some extent as well. It can do some registry cleanup. It is also free. Of course, being free and all is good, but it is probably not the best of the best in protection and prevention.

So much bad advice. The first rule about fight club, is knowing is half the battle.

First, open your task manager, and see if there are any odd processes running. It could just be some adware that was not-unchecked when you installed some software (Ask toolbar when updating java, i'm looking at you.)

If you don't know what something is, google it.

That said, there are many different programs you can use to track and remove malware. I personally use SpywareBlaster and Spybot as immunization tools, along with AdBlock in my browser. Of course keeping it all updated is key to system stability.

I would probably get into the nuts-and-bolts of what's wrong with it, by using stuff like HijackThis to track down anything that might be amiss. If it is malware, I would first attempt to uninstall it via the Programs and Features window in your control panel. Then I would probably resort to using more drastic fixes like ComboFix. Also, just using Microsoft Security Essentials is very good compared to the other stripped down trial-ware security programs like AVG. Just remember to not run more than one real-time malware scanner at a time, they tend to conflict and thrash.

But, if you don't keep your system properly maintained; just a simple visit to a website could exploit something in your browser; and do something called a drive-by attack, and install malware on your machine. And once you have had malware ever installed on your machine, it is not trusted anymore and the only proper way to make sure that you have removed it all, is by reformatting and reinstalling.
